Shockingly underweight model in TV ad

IdaPrentice · 09/02/2025 21:25

Has anyone seen the TV ad for Dylon (of all things)? - it features two female models, the first (with afro hair) is wearing a loose top / pant suit so it's hard to tell, but seems pretty thin, but the second, wearing red, is so so thin. Her arms just go in a straight line, no curve of any kind of muscle, she's bordering on skeletal, her face looks gaunt too.

I just saw the ad for the second time - by coincidence I'd just read an article (think it was on BBC news website) about how fashion houses have moved away from 'body positivity' and plus size models, and thin is back. The theory is this is partially influenced by all the Hollywood stars on Ozempic.

This is so unhealthy to put on TV as the kind of female beauty that everyone should aspire to. I really thought we'd moved past it now. Depressing.

I’m very similar to the women in red OP. I’ve been the same shape and pretty much the same weight all my adult life. I’m 5,9 and 9 stone 7. I’m a perfectly healthy weight for my height.
Sorry if that offends you, but I’m offended. I’ve had a lifetime of fat women telling me how ‘thin’ I am. It clearly makes them feel better about themselves and here you are doing the same 🙄

No this isn't the model I'm talking about. I agree this one looks slim but not necessarily underweight.

It's frustrating that people are commenting based on this, not the TV one.

You want us to believe that Dylon shot two almost identical adverts?

Gettingslimmer · 09/02/2025 22:35

AnnaL94 · 09/02/2025 22:34

Yes it is.

It’s an actress called Bethany slater. It is not a model full stop.

Yes you’re supposed to be able to see bones. It’s shocking some people. This poster, thinks they should be covered in fat.

If they're not, people will use the childish insult 'Teeny tinies' as a way to slap them down 🙄

Misogynistic bullshit but still, Mumsnet allows it.

CestLaVie123 · 09/02/2025 22:36

They both look fine to me

NorthernGirl1981 · 09/02/2025 22:36

SpringChickenGiblets · 09/02/2025 21:42

Behave. They’re a perfectly normal weight, people have forgotten what a healthy weight is.

This! Both women look perfectly fine to me.
Their body shapes are what I would consider to be ‘normal’.

Just because obesity is rife these days it doesn’t mean healthy/normal bodies should be hidden away.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 09/02/2025 22:36

They're just slim not unhealthy.

Are you "skinny" shaming?

Another76543 · 09/02/2025 22:36

AnnaL94 · 09/02/2025 22:31

This is the model. Instagram @ anjaleuenberger

IMO she does look more on the unhealthy underweight side.

But this is Mumsnet, where the teeny tinies are celebrated.

EDIT. Screenshots are under review. Won’t let me post images.

Edited

The second photo is a weird angle so you can't tell. The first one looks like that's her normal healthy weight - her thighs suggest that's her natural weight.

What's with all the recent posts on slim people? Why do people think it's ok to comment on another person's weight? It's offensive, mean, and unnecessary. I'm beginning to think that some people are trying to convince themselves that they are healthy weight by suggesting that those of a normal weight are unhealthy.

IdaPrentice · 09/02/2025 22:37

Has anyone actually seen it on TV? not the video shared here, or the photo. I'm sorry I can't find it on youtube.

OP, I was commenting on the TV ad, just to be clear. As others have said, many people seem to think that being slightly overweight is normal. But in other (healthier) cultures, most people are much slimmer. Also, historically, UK women were slimmer. I have clothes from the 1950's that belonged to my mum and great aunt, and some of them I can't get into (and I'm a size 8), but they were both healthy, and normal for the time.

Got a very Katherine Hepburn figure by the looks of it, angular

I agree with this, she is very Katherine Hepburn and has a perfectly healthy looking figure. Is she slender, yes she is, is she skeletal, absolutely not. She's more slender than the average woman but models generally are. I've seen this advert so many times and never once thought "oh my good look at the bones on her!" I thought this was the advert you were talking about but thought maybe there was a new one because, no, this model is not shockingly underweight.

Edenmum2 · 09/02/2025 21:51

Maybe it's just me but she doesn't stand still long enough for me to see her properly anyway

Not just you! Would have to pause and zoom, and even then I don't think there was a shot with her entire body, all swirly glimpses.

Catsandcannedbeans · 09/02/2025 22:39

She Looks fine. She’s just tall and has a small frame… she is also a model. I see women with that build out and about and definitely don’t think she’s skeletal, just genetically blessed.

Exactly this. It's not ok to shame those who are naturally slim and healthy.

Endofyear · 09/02/2025 22:41

Lady with the afro looks slim, lady in red looks very slim but not skeletal.

redbusbeepbeep · 09/02/2025 22:41

Let’s be honest most people who ‘skinny shame’ are jealous. I’m a size 16 and can admit I’m flipping jealous but I like to admire not tear other women down

DottieMoon · 09/02/2025 22:41

AtlasPine · 09/02/2025 21:44

They look fine to me. Nothing wrong with using slimmer models, same as using bigger ones. We need to see all sizes on tv really.

Agree

Nelliemellie · 09/02/2025 22:43

I don’t trust some images seen nowadays. I think they can airbrush and use Ai in some cases, example the models I see on the m and s website, I used to think they were unrealistic, too skinny. I may be wrong.

EnjoythemoneyJane · 09/02/2025 22:44

If you believe a slim, athletic, healthy-looking woman is so ‘shockingly underweight’, ‘gaunt’ and ‘skeletal’ that you’re moved to start a thread about it, you may want to think about why you see a perfectly normal body weight/type as harmfully abnormal.

MaltaMam · 09/02/2025 22:45

@Pippinsdiary Sorry, there's a thing at school that for their yr 11 proms, girls that can't afford a dress don't get offered a free one via school so they can't attend if they're plus size 😟

She's slim and strong looking - toned. She moves like a dancer.

Absolutely, her arms are really toned! She doesn't look unhealthy at all, she looks lean and strong.

IdaPrentice · 09/02/2025 22:48

I'm not body-shaming anybody, FGS, I'm discussing a trend in fashion / advertising / media for using thin models. I even mentioned this article:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c62elpm2md2o

Yes I was shocked by the model in the Dylon ad that was on Chanel 5 today. NOT the version on youtube shared above. The model wearing red in the TV version had her hair up or shorter, so you could see her neck, and the pose and the shot were different.
