Should I remove a chair (pic)

I bought this corner sofa and regret it now. But im still paying it of.

It's the trek range in DFS they do sell parts like I could have turned it in to 2 separate sofas. But it seems they don't sell the leather one anymore.

The sofa as it is now touches the living room door frame then gos round to where my garden door is and there about a foot gap between the end of the sofa and the doors . I was debating taking one of the seats away to make it smaller

It's a lovely sofa.

But it does look a bit overpowering in the picture. How big is the rest of the room?

If it's a large room then it might be fine but judging just on the picture I think it would be better with the end seat taken away.

Doggymummar · 02/02/2025 12:06

I think I would lose the corner piece to break it up a bit, it's quite dominant

Peachy2005 · 02/02/2025 12:09

How many of you are there? If it’s only 4, yes maybe take a chair away… It fits in the space though and the only thing I don’t like is the console piece, but presumably that has a function. Is there a coffee table/area rug to go in front? It dominates more because the floor is very bare, I think.

It does over power the room definitely. I could possibly remove the seat that's next to the corner part then move it up . I would not want to get rid of the one you suggested as its a recliner and has the arm rest. Still same out come really though if I remove the one next to the corner

I would if I could have got an arm rest . But it would look like half a sofa of i just took the corner out

It does overpower the room rather, doesn't it? I'd remove the one the child is sitting on, and probably also the narrow bit in the row facing the camera.

There are 5 at home and regular visitors from older children and GS

Yeah we like the console bit because the kids put there crap in there and it makes the end chair feel like an arm chair and gives a bit of personal space to the grumpy py teenager who does not want anyone near them .

I don't like rugs /coffee tables i like it to be a clear space . Its easier for me to sweep/clean and baby GS toddles about i would not want him to hit his head

Not sure what you mean by the narrow bit?

Its big but it sounds like you use it all id just get some cushions to break up the black 😊

The bit that looks like a loose not attached arm

ShowOfHands · 02/02/2025 12:40

It's large, dark and dominates the space but if you're sticking with it, I'd shorten it and put an end table at the right hand end. I'd also have a rug, some throws and cushions and stop it looking like such a monolith.

ShowOfHands · 02/02/2025 12:47

Something like this. A bit more interest, colour, textile variety and some softening of the effect the sofa is creating.

That's nice. And definitely breaks it up. But in reality it wouldn't stay like it the throws would probably end up on the floor kids would try make tents with them. The cushions would probably be the floor is larver or simlar. It sounds odd but it would just make it harder for me to keep tidy

If what you do in the lounge is sit, watch tv, play board games, have people round, hang out, then I would just keep it until it naturally dies a death. Might get some colourful cushions and does it matter if the kids play with them it takes minutes to throw cushions and blankets back.

hopeishere · 02/02/2025 13:17

I agree about the throws - they look great when they are all folded up but shit the rest of time strewn about the place. Also they will slip off a leather sofa all the time.

I'd maybe try a rug. Remove the bit the child is sitting on. Can the console bit be moved? Maybe reconsider the wallpaper?

hopeishere · 02/02/2025 13:18

Can you take photo from the other angle? Beside the garden door.

gangstasquirrel · 02/02/2025 13:40

It dominates the room because all you have is a huge dark sofa and nothing else. It’s extremely uninviting. The wallpaper doesn’t make it any more exciting either, it’s like half a room is missing.

But I don’t think you should break the sofa if there are 5 of you.

Do you have a photo from a different angle?

I hate that wallpaper now . I made a massive fuss about getting it done took ages choosing it . And it's shit 🤣

I did think about panelling the half wall type I did it in my bedroom and it came out well . But im not sure about the living room . Just a small amount would show above the sofas so not sure if there's much point .

Yeah I'm starting to think its more to do with the decor than the actual sofa. I mean it's not the best . But if the decor was better it might sofen the room up a bit.

GloriousGoosebumps · 02/02/2025 14:43

I agree that the sofa is overpowering the room. If throws and cushions won't work for your lifestyle then you need to look at bringing some interest to the walls so that the sofa isn't the only thing that you see. I'd suggest large black framed photos or prints on the two visible walls. They need to be large or they'll simply "disappear" into the background.

Lighterlilly · 02/02/2025 14:51

I think from your comments you prefer practicality to style, so for me, as you’ve lots of folks and the objective is to keep things clean and tidy, then I’d just go with it as is and not change it,

the room lacks colour and softness, so it lacks warmth, and if I’m honest it still will if you reduce the size of the sofa.

if a rug, cushions, throws, a coffee table, plants, artwork etc isn’t a goer, then leave as it is fit for the purpose you wish.

I think so too. The sofa is practical and you seem to need a big one. And it would be a waste to get rid of the recliner seat, those are so comfy! Keep the sofa the way it is, and experiment a bit with decor, green plants and colours.

Sofas do need to be comfortable and practical, which the nicest looking ones seldom are anyway. Leather is easy to just wipe off, and as it is now you will fit lots of people in.

No it would probably make it look cluttered, and make the sofa look out of place.

I think it would look more together with the same wallpaper on both walls. It would look as if the sofa belonged in the room more.

Chuchoter · 02/02/2025 16:22

Pictures 7 & 8 show walls being pale.

It's the hideous wallpaper on one wall that does the room no favours.

You don't have to have lots of cushions, perhaps two large pale coloured ones that come out when the kids have gone to bed?!

Dress the room right and the sofa won't be so dominant.

So do away with the wallpaper and have the walls lighter. With a couple of pictures to set it of and maybe new curtains that are are medium light. Ie not to light or to dark . I will have a think
