How much alcohol to take on a week away?

JimHalpertsWife · 01/02/2025 21:26

More curious to know how much you would take in this instance-:

Me and dh, away for a week, with 3 other couples. We've already agreed to each take our own booze, so I don't need a sharing buffer. 7 nights. The general vibe of the trip is daytime walks / visits to nearby attractions, then social evenings in with dinner, games, drinks.

What would you and dh/oh take?

Use the local pubs while your there and then top up if needed in the accommodation, it always goes down better in a pub and you might get into some interesting chats with other people

JustCuttinAboot · 03/02/2025 22:34

Bloody hell, most of you drink a lot on holiday!

It's a holiday! Time to relax and let your hair down!

I wouldn't take any. I'd buy what I wanted as and when needed at the destination.

The amounts being suggested here for a week are genuinely shocking. I drank heavily as a student and didn’t get through anywhere near that much in a week.

Why are you shocked? Surely it's better to over estimate than run out? They can bring home whatever they don't drink.

Bjorkdidit · 04/02/2025 08:05

I don't think it's shocking at all because it's just a few social drinks each day with lunch, dinner and in the evening that adds up to what looks like a lot over the week. Very few people drink like that at home and it's just part of being on holiday.

SnoopysHoose · 04/02/2025 08:19

I would wonder how close the friendships were if you needed to drink every night.
Is that the point of the thread?

Probably 6/7 wine, bottle of rum and mixers.

Maddy70 · 04/02/2025 08:36

Take double what you think you'll need. Share yours with others.

Not really pub people - maybe stop at one during our walks for a quick shandy or a diet coke but evenings we plan to relax all together over food at home.

God this is not the thread for people who don’t drink!

Plenty of people like to relax and drink on holiday with friends.

I would rather have too much than too little. I’d also feel bad if we ran out and were drinking others wine!

So I’d take a case of 12 mixed - 3 white 3 rose and 6 red.
Couple of bottles of fizz.
Beer but DH would decide that as I don’t like beer.
and a bottle of gin with tonic.

Even though you are bringing your own. You’ll all be sharing. Better to go home with bottles than run out.

Why are non drinkers even bothering to answer?

wherearemypastnames · 04/02/2025 11:18

One bottle of wine and 4-6 bottles of beer would be for us two

Double that if there is no local pub buy expect leftovers

OllysArmyRidesAgain · 04/02/2025 11:21

I'd take - a case or 2 of beer for DH, he isn't a big drinker but I would expect him to get through 1-3 cans per night on this type of trip with friends, he would also take Coke Zero and tea bags (and would be happy switching during the evening)

For me, it would have been Prosecco x 6 bottles and 6 x bottles of white as a minimum, but menopausal me has a very low tolerance for alcohol, so I have to pace myself otherwise, I just don't sleep, so now it would be a couple of bottles of white and plenty of fizzy water to make a spritzer

Per week? Or per day?

How do you eke out one bottle of wine for 7 nights? in a thimble?

One between two people! I hope they've packed a pipette to portion it out.

MillionaireCaramel · 04/02/2025 14:43

When me, my partner and my parents went to a self catering cottage last year. Each couple took some.

My parents took about 3 bottles of red and a case of beers.

Me and my partner took 3 or 4 bottles of rosé (my drink of choice) a case of beers and some of those mixed cans of rum and coke.

It all got shared around, I don't drink spirits really and mum likes the odd glass of rosé, so it all worked out. We did have to buy more rosé and red but loads of the beer came home with us.

I also took one of those big 1.5l bottles of prosecco I had left over from christmas, which also came home with us (we just didn't bother with it)

Aintnobodygottime · 04/02/2025 14:44

They possibly just pass it between themselves to smell it each night. The level only goes down through evaporation.

Why bother saying you drink when it's a bottle for 7 nights?

GrammarTeacher · 04/02/2025 16:53

Because not everybody drinks every night of a holiday. The amount suggested by some is really a LOT. And there’s a huge range of ‘drinker’.
I’m not a non-drinker by a long stretch.
I like to DO things on a holiday. Hangovers don’t figure in that. So yes the one bottle of wine would do me fine and husband would take 4 beers. Might buy some more while there but won’t drink every night.

irregularegular · 04/02/2025 17:00

I'd probably reckon on about half nights being beer and half wine. Though we might not actually drink every night and would probably bring some low alcohol beers too. So probably 3-4 bottles wine and 12 beers. We might well not drink it all. But can always bring some back.

Aintgointogoa · 04/02/2025 17:49

@Hayley1256 you are welcome to come with me as well ! I have just spent a weekend (so just one overnight) with friends in a very remote location - there are NO shops nor home delivery options. Friend and I took 5 bottles of white & 5 red. Yes we like our wine. The 'guys' took beers and rum, we don't drink either of these. We spent most of the two days cooking, chatting by the river, hiking into the hills, playing games at night (cards etc) Latest 11 30 pm on Saturday. Just to show we didn't drink ourselves into a stupor ha ha....up early on Sunday too.
The others either didn't drink or shared a little of ours at mealtimes. We left half a bottle of white and half a red. Now we're discussing going back to this beautiful spot for 4 nights we are a little aghast .......🤭

TheVeryAudacity · 04/02/2025 18:25

@GrammarTeacher The question is what would you take, rather than what would you necessarily drink, and lots of people have answered as such, and taking into account not buying anymore while there.

I listed wine, beers and gin. I might not open the bottle of gin at all (certainly wouldn't finish it) or have a beer, but I don't know when packing the car on Friday what I'll fancy after a long hike on Tuesday, so I'd take enough to have options.

Perhaps it makes us raging winos but DH and I can share a bottle of red and have a beer or a G&T or two over the course of a long evening without any suggestion of a hangover.
