How much alcohol to take on a week away?

More curious to know how much you would take in this instance-:

Me and dh, away for a week, with 3 other couples. We've already agreed to each take our own booze, so I don't need a sharing buffer. 7 nights. The general vibe of the trip is daytime walks / visits to nearby attractions, then social evenings in with dinner, games, drinks.

What would you and dh/oh take?

I'm baffled by the expectation that each couple will cater for themselves

We are each bringing our own booze. We are sharing the food catering.

Dh will bring a whiskey to share. And tbh I envisage all the red will get lined up and we will just open a bottle at a time amongst us all, but yes, we are agreeing to bring the amount that suits us.

I would wonder how close the friendships were if you needed to drink every night.

We don't need to drink every night. We are away on a holiday and having an evening drink with dinner/games/movie is just part of that.

Probs 10x red wine
1 x gin or rum plus enough mixers
24 bottles of beer
Maybe a bottle of fizz

Jesus! For just the two of them?

These types of threads always get folk frothing at the mouth, telling people they have an alcohol problem! If it was me and DH then likely 2 cases of beer, 2 or 3 Prosecco, 5/6 red and 3/4 white. Probably a gin and some mixers. This is to give us a choice at night, unlikely to drink it all but it depends.

To me that is a problem. Absolutely.

Bjorkdidit · 02/02/2025 11:21

The thing is that, on holiday, it's possible to drink a lot without being drunk, just with food and while chatting.

A glass of wine with lunch
A cocktail before dinner
A couple more glasses of wine with dinner
A night cap

The above is pretty much a bottle of wine per person per day plus a bottle of spirits over the week.

So a couple would need at least a case of wine and a couple of bottles of spirits and I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't last the week.

We probably drink at least that amount on holiday, many people will, but of course not day to day at home.

Aintnobodygottime · 02/02/2025 12:00

I’m very comfortable with the amount I drink but I would query why anyone who doesn’t drink at all would post on this thread. Not because it threatens any self delusion about my alcohol consumption but it’s utterly pointless given the thread title.

See also every other thread on which people go out of their way to say how they don’t have/do/like the thing that is being asked about. I find it bizarre.

FrenchandSaunders · 02/02/2025 12:47

We did similar before Xmas. Took:

case of 12 mixed wine
few fizz
gin
rum
brandy
Guinness
cider
lager

didn't drink it all but nice to have options.

I'm baffled by the expectation that each couple will cater for themselves. It sounds uncomfortable and mean-spirited and not a trip I would sign up to. Our group would be offering a cocktail of the day on the night we cook dinner, in addition to contributing to a well-stocked communal bar.

Appreciate that wasn't the question!

So for DH and I:

12 bottles of white wine
Gin (from the cocktail cabinet)
Whiskey (ditto)
A slab each of cans of tonic and ginger ale
A net of lemons
Ice cube bags or pick up a bag from the nearest shop enroute.
Port

Bring your own booze makes sense really. If you're cooking communally then everyone will eat more or less the same
value of food (especially if you're all in heterosexual couples).

But over the course of a whole week some people will want a glass of wine each night, or less, and some will have a bottle each day, some will be happy to drink dirt cheap fiver a bottle plonk and some will only really be happy drinking something that costs three times as much. That could easily mean one abstemious couple subsidising another boozier couple to the tune of a hundred quid which could lead to resentment.

JimHalpertsWife · 02/02/2025 13:29

Plus we all have different tastes. I'll bring Sav Blanc and someone else might prefer Chardonnay etc.

CrushingOnRubies · 02/02/2025 13:44

Bottle of gin & tonic & lemons
Bottle of whiskey
5 bottles of red wine...

Bottle of white wine

Bottle of fizz

It's alcohol so what doesn't get drink can come home.

CrushingOnRubies · 02/02/2025 13:45

Oh dp would also pack a 10/15 beers

warmheartcoldfeet · 02/02/2025 14:09

3 bottles of prosecco
teabags
soya milk
hot chocolate
pepsi max

DeepFatFried · 02/02/2025 14:11

7 bottles of red
A bottle of cava or Cremant ( for sharing, there will be nights when you have fizz)
Bottle of vodka, tonics, limes + lemons
A dozen pale ales.

Wouldn’t drink it all, but would like to have options.

DreamW3aver · 02/02/2025 14:19

Don't you just take what you'd normally drink plus maybe a little extra. I'm not sure I understand the problem unless either funds or places selling alcohol are not available why is this an issue?

HorrorFan81 · 02/02/2025 14:37

Depending on which friendship group I'm with we tend to get through quite alot of booze on a trip like this - if you fancy a G&T or something before dinner, wine with dinner, wine with games etc it's easy to be drinking for 6-7 hours (not get drunk - just leisurely drinking over a long evening)

For me and my DH we would probably take

12 bottles of red
24 beers
One bottle of gin and some tonics
Couple of proseccos

I'd expect to bring some home but I'd rather have more than run out

I guess it's the same as parents popping over the the 'without children' section of MN. It happens.

Not really. This is actually bizarre why anyone would come on this thread and say I don’t know because I don’t drink. None of us are offended just bemused.

Crunchymum · 02/02/2025 16:34

I'm more interested in the logistics of taking a week's worth of food with you?

Is this all meals or will you be eating out at all? Are all the different couples cooking their own meals each night or is there a rota? What about fridge storage? Sounds like a nightmare.

In answer to the question about alcohol. When I used to to drink it would have been a crate of wine (12 bottles) and a box of beer but now it would just be a few AF beers and some beers for DP.

ExtraDisorganised · 02/02/2025 16:56

There was a thread the other week asking what alcoholic drinks would you get in for pre-drinks with the girls before a night out. The OP specified alcoholic. Well, the amount of people that came on to say they don’t drink so they wouldn’t get any in, pre-drinks are a fast route to alcohol dependency, pre-drinks are only for teenagers, blah, blah. No help to the OP whatsoever, just wanting to sound superior.

JimHalpertsWife · 02/02/2025 16:59

Everyone is bringing enough bacon eggs and bread for breakfasts - communal all eating the same.

Lunches out on walks etc (for those that want lunch) are just sorted by each person.

Each couple is providing an evening meal for everyone, twice. One of these will be used for a lunch one of the days.

The place has a large fridge in the main kitchen and a fridge freezer out in the garage so enough space for the bacon / 8 main meals.

Whydoyoucarewhatido · 02/02/2025 17:00

I’d probably take 12 fizz and 12 white. And no, we wouldn’t drink it all but I’ve had a holiday like this before, where everyone agrees to take their own. And the other couple (who definitely like a drink) brought 3 bottles! All very awkward if you have a drink and they don’t and they look at you all sad 🤣🤣 I’d rather just take extra and bring it home.

JimHalpertsWife · 02/02/2025 17:03

I have no problem bringing excess back home.

I think we've settled on:-
Bottle of whiskey (dh drinks it neat and will want to share with others so I imagine that'll all go)
5x fizz (my preferred drink)
7× reds (one to share with evening meal each evening)
14x bottles of beer for that post walk pre dinner time
4x white (for when the fizz runs out) Grin

I enjoy a G&T but usually only in the summer so likely won't bring any gin.

Well I don’t drink, but my husband does. So I put what he would drink

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 02/02/2025 17:51

I'd start with 2 bottles of red and 4 beers, and maybe top up in the week.
