How much alcohol to take on a week away?

More curious to know how much you would take in this instance-:

Me and dh, away for a week, with 3 other couples. We've already agreed to each take our own booze, so I don't need a sharing buffer. 7 nights. The general vibe of the trip is daytime walks / visits to nearby attractions, then social evenings in with dinner, games, drinks.

What would you and dh/oh take?

I have no problem bringing excess back home.

I think we've settled on:-
Bottle of whiskey (dh drinks it neat and will want to share with others so I imagine that'll all go)
5x fizz (my preferred drink)
7× reds (one to share with evening meal each evening)
14x bottles of beer for that post walk pre dinner time
4x white (for when the fizz runs out) Grin

I enjoy a G&T but usually only in the summer so likely won't bring any gin.

As a previous poster suggested, I’d include a couple of bottles of port, possibly to share.

Mangoesintoapub · 03/02/2025 18:07

Definitely err on the side of more not less- you can always take it home and you don’t know now what you’ll be eating or what you might be in the mood for. Also I think it’s really natural to share a bit- if you’ve just poured yourself a glass and your friend comes in it’s natural to offer her one too, not tell her to go and get her own- so leave a bit of surplus for that sort of thing too.

Oh lordy I'm not a Port drinker - is that a common drink to share? I've never been offered it by any of the other couples when at theirs.

I can’t believe the amounts people are suggesting for two people for just 7 days. Really!!!
I might take a bottle but only if previously gifted one. I’m far more likely to ensure we had decent tea and coffee. But then we regularly go weeks without alcohol.

This probably isn't the thread for you. I also fo weeks and months with barely a drop, but it's a holiday, and evening drinks with and after dinner will be part of it.

Couple of boxes of wine, couple of bottles of spirits, mixers. That should do it. Or three of each, or four who cares. I am baffled at the need to ask here where a thimbleful is dependent territory. You know your habits, and an extra few when away is always on the cards. Work it out.

GrammarTeacher · 03/02/2025 18:17

The quantities being suggested for two people though are massive!
When we do take alcohol it’s one bottle of wine. Maybe a half bottle of fizz (DH doesn’t drink it) and he might take a beer a night but end up bringing half of them home.
I have a lovely looking bottle of Chateauneuf sitting here at the moment but not sure when I’ll drink it. Will need to share as it’s so rich. A glass a night on holiday maybe but not a bottle.

For a week?
For two people?!

I’d probably add another couple of bottles or three of fizz.

Businessflake · 03/02/2025 18:25

I would want a choice each evening, depending on food and how I feel.

If I had to take it all with me I’d go for
1 x bottle of gin (plus tonics)
6 x red
6 x white
2 x bubbles
12 x beers
2-3 different malts

I can’t get on board with everyone taking their own booze to be honest. Surely people take their fair share and then offer round each evening?

What’s left gets taken home so nothing will be wasted.

Sunnyside4 · 03/02/2025 18:26

We're all different. I'd probably take approx three bottles of lager for DH, three white and one red wine. DH like Southern Comfort and would probably take a bottle, thinking he'd offer that as a drink to anyone who fancies.

If you can't easily go out and buy extras, take an extra bottle or two. I like a drink, but you may find after a couple of drinks or so a night, you might want a bit less some of the other nights.

ValentineValentineV · 03/02/2025 18:28

My DH would take 7 bottles of red wine and then run out and buy about 4 (7) more. He’s also take a bottle of flavoured Absolute or Hendricks. I’d take a mini bottle of Prosecco for each evening (white and rose), normally I have one mini bottle a month. I may take a bottle of Baileys as well or a couple of cans of porn star martinis.
Realistically I know we’d drink way more than normal if socialising every night and if (ha ha) there’s any left we can easily take home it home with us.

There'll definelty be some sharing - eg if I take fizz and another woman takes fizz, we just open whichever bottle is nearest for both of us then move onto the next one next time.

It's more that we aren't organising ahead say "I'll bring gin, you bring rum, ill sort the reds you sort the whites etx"

I wouldn't be too exercised over it - you can always buy when there?

Will you be in the UK?

Port is quite nice to drink if you like cheese. Not essential but it’s a nice way to end a meal with good cheese and a glass of port. But each to their own choices.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 03/02/2025 20:54

Case of wine, maybe 3 or 4 bottles of Cremant, beers, maybe some gin & tonic. Would expect to bring some home, but I’d take more rather than less if my week wasn’t going to involve doing a shop.

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 03/02/2025 20:55

Used to be partial to a hot port in my student days, about a zillion years ago.

We'd walk down to the offy to get a bottle, get nice and cold, and have a hot port to warm up!!😂

Uk yes, and probably not too hard a task to nip out for more. I just really want to relax. I don't want to go to a supermarket or have to think of any of the usual mundane crap my week is filled with. I want a proper week off.

None.

See, I don't drink tea or coffee. If someone started a thread entitled "how many teabags would you pack for a week away", I'd scroll past because the question doesn't apply to me. Just a thought...

purplecorkheart · 03/02/2025 21:03

I would probably bring 6 white and 6 red. I know you say that everyone is bring their own but I would still like to bring enough for everyone.

Romanswindowcleaner · 03/02/2025 21:04

3 bottles red, 3 white, 2x bottles champagne (to share with everyone), open bottle of gin from the cupboard and fever tree tonics, dozen beers for dh.

would expect to bring home the rest of the gin, a couple beers

Whereas to me the idea of taking tea bags on holiday (or being upset there isn't a kettle in the hotel room) is completely alien and bizarre. I drink the odd coffee or tea at home but I could go weeks with one 🤷🏻‍♀️

Different strokes for different folks.

SaltAndVinegarRiceCake · 03/02/2025 22:13

2 bottles of sauvignon blanc, 2 bottles of prosecco and a carton of fresh orange for mimosas. Crate of maybe 12 ciders or beer.

Then take more than you think you might drink, and you can always bring the excess home.

Enjoy your week away!
