How much alcohol to take on a week away?

JimHalpertsWife · 01/02/2025 21:26

More curious to know how much you would take in this instance-:

Me and dh, away for a week, with 3 other couples. We've already agreed to each take our own booze, so I don't need a sharing buffer. 7 nights. The general vibe of the trip is daytime walks / visits to nearby attractions, then social evenings in with dinner, games, drinks.

What would you and dh/oh take?

Probs 10x red wine
1 x gin or rum plus enough mixers
24 bottles of beer
Maybe a bottle of fizz

For a week?
For two people?!

healthybychristmas · 02/02/2025 00:56

@Hayley1256 are you sure you will have enough? You might want to stock up halfway after a couple of days.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 02/02/2025 00:59

My husband would probably take a bottle of whisky but not drink it all. I don’t drink alcohol

That's what I call a holiday😁

Probably a bottle between the two of us per night, plus some beers in case we wanted beer instead of wine, and expect not to drink it all. Would live without spirits for the week.

Aintnobodygottime · 02/02/2025 01:20

Case of wine and some beer. Can always bring some home. Easier than trying to predict exact amounts.

Ginkypig · 02/02/2025 01:34

If driving
I’d prob take a bottle of red to share each night so 7
a couple of bottles of Prosecco or similar.

and maybe a bottle of jack for him and a couple of Guinness or ale for me but knowing they probably won’t get used.

I would definitely be expecting to take at least 2-4 bottles home and probably all the Guinness/ale and most/all of the bottle of jack.

if going on public transport I’d cut that down to 4 (max 5) bottles of red total.

Yeah, we like wine 😊 we'd probs buy some local wines too.

JollyViper · 02/02/2025 01:54

@Hayley1256
But that wouldn't be a regular weekly amount would it? That is more than I've drank in a year!

Lol no, tend to drink a couple of weekends a month (when DD is with her dad). Never get really drunk either. On this kind of holiday we'd probs have a few beers after the day out, a bottle of wine with dinner. Then the 2nd bottle of wine followed by the mixer drink (drinking window 5pm- midnight so 7 hours)

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 02/02/2025 02:17

I'd probably buy it when I got to the location!

coxesorangepippin · 02/02/2025 02:19

7 bottles

coxesorangepippin · 02/02/2025 02:20

Sensible approach

Findacleverusername · 02/02/2025 07:06

I think there are some posters on this thread with a serious alcohol problem.

DJrocks · 02/02/2025 07:13

These types of threads always get folk frothing at the mouth, telling people they have an alcohol problem! If it was me and DH then likely 2 cases of beer, 2 or 3 Prosecco, 5/6 red and 3/4 white. Probably a gin and some mixers. This is to give us a choice at night, unlikely to drink it all but it depends.

Sometimeswinning · 02/02/2025 07:14

I love the posters commenting none I don’t drink 😂

@Hayley1256 I’d happily invite you away for a week,@Findacleverusername you’re best off not coming!

Well I like the idea of the country walks and visiting local attractions but the thought of being couped up with the same group of people every evening drinking too much makes me feel claustrophobic.
So yes count me out!

While I don't think it could be said that anyone on this thread is ""frothing at the mouth" (well maybe not until you posted) "these types on threads" can have people saying others drink a lot, i find they just as equally "get folk" wound up that other people don't drink much or simply don't drink (with expected insults). Often before there's any comments about drink problems.

Anyway @JimHalpertsWife how much you bring depends on how much you drink. Think about what you like on a standard night in socialising and bring that x 7.

If your worried you'll run out add in an extra day's worth. If you're worried people will judge you've brought so much, leave some in the car.

AppleKatie · 02/02/2025 07:47

I think a bottle of wine to share each night plus some beers is entirely normal.

for reference this week in our house we haven’t had any alcohol at all but the question isn’t what do you get with your weekly shop, it’s how much would you take on holiday!

I would only take spirits if planning a cocktail evening but if we were I’d probably take a range (and drink a couple of shots of each thing)

kiraric · 02/02/2025 07:54

JimHalpertsWife · 01/02/2025 21:46

There are no plans to do a food shop (taking dinners with us), but obviously if we go on a walk somewhere with a nice shop or two we might pick up a bottle - but no plan to do so.

But what about breakfast? Lunches? Milk for tea and coffee etc? Fruit? Fresh bread?

Surely you will end up doing a food shop as a group, even if it's just a top up

That said - we would probably take a bottle of wine for every evening and gin/tonic, might not get through it but would like to have it there

NancyJoan · 02/02/2025 07:59

Maybe five bottles of white, plus a bottle of gin and some tonics. I wouldn’t expect to finish all the gin, but it’s easy enough to bring back home with you. I’d take ice cube trays/bags in case they don’t have them, and some limes too.

TheChosenTwo · 02/02/2025 08:06

For a week away with friends I would probably have a drink or plan to every night. We went away for a week over new year and I had a drink 4 nights of the 7.
We do a big shop and everyone adds what they want to the order and we just split the cost. But if we were just taking things we would probably take 4 bottles of wine, a box of hard seltzers (for me) and a box of beers (for dh). Maybe also gin and vodka plus mixers and share whatever we’d brought. We certainly wouldn’t drink all the spirits ourselves, dh likes the occasional gin and I like a vodka but my hangovers are too savage these days to have much more than 1 or 2!

ExtraDisorganised · 02/02/2025 08:14

Perhaps three bottle of red, a case of beer (24) maybe some premixed cans of cocktail. Soft drinks too, I can't drink more than a couple of alcoholic drinks in an evening any more. DH has cut right back on health grounds so his tolerance has gone down as well.

Lowhangingfruitisthebest · 02/02/2025 08:37

Mum2jenny · 01/02/2025 22:14

Seven nights for 2 adults, I’d take at least a case of wine (12 bottles) and beer if my DP drank beer. Possibly a bottle of gin and mixers too. Whisky wouldn’t go amiss either.
But I’d expect to take a fair amount of the alcohol home with me.

Something similar to this but we probably wouldn't be taking much home🤣
I would also check if its possible to get deliveroo to the location of your stay, you never know what you might need especially if you are not planning on doing a food shop.

TianasBayou · 02/02/2025 08:44

I'm baffled by the expectation that each couple will cater for themselves. It sounds uncomfortable and mean-spirited and not a trip I would sign up to. Our group would be offering a cocktail of the day on the night we cook dinner, in addition to contributing to a well-stocked communal bar.

Appreciate that wasn't the question!

So for DH and I:

12 bottles of white wine
Gin (from the cocktail cabinet)
Whiskey (ditto)
A slab each of cans of tonic and ginger ale
A net of lemons
Ice cube bags or pick up a bag from the nearest shop enroute.
Port
