Mobile phones used on buses

I’ve just lost it. I boarded a bus which was empty upstairs I had a lot of shopping and took the front seat it was a 50 minute journey. A woman got on and took the other free front seat took her phone out lodged it in between her ear and shoulder and settled into a chat. She was speaking continuously. I thought annoying but hopefully she would get off soon or end the call. She didn’t. After half an hour I decided to play some music without phones to drown her out . Passive aggressive but I was pretty wound up by then. She paused and asked me to turn the music off. I replied that her call was antisocial in a public place. It turned into a big row with a man behind calling me a Karen (of course) and telling me she had the right and I should have just moved. In the end I just moved downstairs. He was pretty nasty possibly drunk. Am I being unreasonable and should have just moved? I’m on public transport a lot and the antisocial behaviour is getting to me.

Why assume everyone has headphones? Why should people be forced to use them due to the increasing antisocial behaviour?

What do you routinely use your phone for in public and do you have it on silent?

Imho it's courteous not to inflict what I'm doing on my phone on others and I'm pretty private anyway. If you can afford a smartphone you can afford headphones, they're not expensive.

Talking on the phone is not antisocial behaviour, a bus isn’t a library. There’s a reason trains have a quiet carriage - because phone calls are not banned on the rest of the train!

You are in public, if you don’t want to deal with the background noise of the public either wear headphones or get a taxi.

They’re headphones, what are you scared of?

If you don’t like public noise that’s a you problem and headphones are the perfect remedy to drowning out noise you can’t stand

OP did you or did you not play music from your phone on the bus? Because in your OP you clearly stated you did but you’re then getting really mad at people saying you did

OK, try to concentrate: OP briefly played music AFTER suffering 30 minutes of loud conversation.
She sat quietly for 30 minutes whilst the other droned on and on, loudly.
If you void the social contract, don't expect others to respect it.
(another new word for you 😉)

Riapia · 01/02/2025 13:49

I find very few things more entertaining than listening to someone’s private phone conversation. The more detailed the conversation the better.
Some could do to speak up a bit more out of respect for those trying to “overhear “.
😉😁😁.

Thats a very long way of saying “Yes she did play music on the bus”. 😂 Do you and OP think that somehow time was turned back or something? OP seems to be very offended that I am pointing out she did something she said she did.

Its hilarious that you and OP think that what she did wasn’t seriously anti-social and inconsiderate because apparently the intention was to make a point 😂 like I say we can’t all be blessed with brains

I am sorry that you have such serious comprehension problems.

Even one way so you get the hmmm etc?

Of course. There's still plenty of judging opportunities listening to one side of it.

Futurename · 01/02/2025 14:04

i was listening to someone having a nice chat on the phone with someone called Julie, When she had finished that chat she called someone else and started slagging Julie off! I was most entertained. I nearly missed my stop.

No need to be sorry, as I don’t have comprehension problems. OP said she played music on the bus. And then getting upset because people pointed out she played music in the bus. This thread is comedy gold.

Not on public transport but me and DH once had a meal in total silence because the woman on the next table was divulging all the gossip about her affair with a younger colleague! I was quite annoyed when they left as I missed the ending 😂

JandamiHash · 01/02/2025 14:08

The OP also needs to decide if she moved or not. As in the OP she did and then in other posts she said she couldn’t

Kids vaping on buses, that annoys me more.

Yes but actually that’s not legal. The wind up with this antisocial behaviour is that it’s allowed and accepted.

I rarely use public transport but from what I can see people just scroll the internet and only the truly inconsiderate like yourself play loud music.

You don’t need WiFi to make a phone call or play music anyway. Bus companies need an incentive for people to travel. Wi-Fi is a huge incentive

Well I’m thinking you are a troll. You are persistently ignoring what I’m saying. Why do you assume WiFi on train will attract passengers? Plenty like me. Anyway as you said you don’t often use public transport so why on earth are you engaging in this chat? You would have no experience of this situation.

Are you incapable of speaking? Why didn’t you just politely ask her to move/stop/quieten down?

You can’t get yourself all worked up and then blow up at someone because you were unable to speak up.

You obviously don’t live in a big city and experience the nature of people around you. I would have received a gobfull of abuse. I tried (extremely briefly) to make a point and she did exactly this. She was absolutely unable to understand that what she was doing might affect others around her

Nice to live in a place where a polite request would get the response of surprise and apology. Like in the old days

Wi-Fi probably attracts passengers because they can the use WiFi. Duh

Troll hunting is banned on MN but I’d love to hear why I’m a trill

Have you decided yet if you moved and if you played music?

If you so scared of using your words because of potential abuse why did you use a passive aggressive method intended to wind the woman up instead? Did you think you would get a better reaction?

Your actions got the reaction they deserved

Take off your rose tinted glasses, my dear. You have no idea how people will react to a polite request unless you try.

At the end of the day you couldn’t speak up for yourself so decided to be PA.

LemonBossy · 01/02/2025 18:06

Well I think there might be a bus phone-caller or two on this thread 😂

Honestly I can't believe what a hard time you're getting OP. I feel your pain. The only thing that makes public transport bearable these days is noise blocking headphones or earbuds. You can't count on people being respectful of others so you have to insulate yourself against them.

It's clear that what you did what out of sheer frustration.

There's a huge difference between someone having a quick phone call at normal volume, with an equal amount of speaking and listening, and someone speaking at top volume right by your ear for 30 minutes or more without pausing for breath. The OP was very clear about why she played her music allowed.

All those saying they would have moved or done something else passive aggressive, good for you. The OP was driven to a more drastic response. It doesn't make her worse than the caller or as bad as.

The woman making the loud phone call was unreasonable. However, so were you for playing music without headphones or earphones, regardless of the reason. Both of those things are completely unacceptable.

Please read my post before commenting. I was NOT playing loud music.
