Mobile phones used on buses

I’ve just lost it. I boarded a bus which was empty upstairs I had a lot of shopping and took the front seat it was a 50 minute journey. A woman got on and took the other free front seat took her phone out lodged it in between her ear and shoulder and settled into a chat. She was speaking continuously. I thought annoying but hopefully she would get off soon or end the call. She didn’t. After half an hour I decided to play some music without phones to drown her out . Passive aggressive but I was pretty wound up by then. She paused and asked me to turn the music off. I replied that her call was antisocial in a public place. It turned into a big row with a man behind calling me a Karen (of course) and telling me she had the right and I should have just moved. In the end I just moved downstairs. He was pretty nasty possibly drunk. Am I being unreasonable and should have just moved? I’m on public transport a lot and the antisocial behaviour is getting to me.

Yeah, I'd find it annoying but I'd just put my headphones in or move away if it was really bothering me.

Because the sounds of talking, which we ALL do, is different to incessant music. Would you a rather a neighbour who talks lots of plays loud music lots?

Why should OP 'use her words'?

Because shes a grown up? Toddlers know to sue their words FFS. If you have a problem with someone use that big wet thing that’s in your mouth and speak up. Imagine if everyone only ever did what OP does.

You also don't know the difference between complete silence and having a conversation/ face time and still being considerate towards others sharing the same space. All a little too subtle for you, right? 😂

Personally I think it’s inconsiderate for people to expect silence around them at all times. Seriously how do you cope in public?! And who do you think you are that you believe everyone around you should pander to your preferences, why do you win?

Edited

Everything you are saying is one sided, antagonistic and dumb.
But again, since you can't read properly:
nobody expects complete silence
just basic consideration for other people.
Why is it too much for you?

Needmorelego · 01/02/2025 12:50

As someone that uses London buses daily I can understand that sometimes people like the OP eventually just have enough. They crack.
Being on a modern London bus is a sensory nightmare. It just is. It's noise noise noise.
Jabbering away on a phone in a constant monologue is NOT the same as two people sat together chatting. It just isn't.
It's loud and it's irritating.
Playing music was probably a bit childish from the OP but I can understand why she lost it and wanted to prove a point.

Please read the post. After half an hour of her monologue I flipped and turned music on for about 2 minutes to get her attention. It worked - she turned to me angrily because her conversation was being disturbed. She was outraged about this! I chose to do this rather than speak because I knew how that would go!

You thought antagonising in a PA way and behaving like a petulant teenager would “go down” better than behaving like a grown up?

I have headphones but they are not ear plug type and the bigger ones are a bit bulky. However in future I will have to pack them. I can’t manage the in ear type. Point is, this isn’t the first time I’ve been sat next to someone who uses their bus journey as a phone catch up. Not for 5/10 minutes but the whole long journey. They are assuming this has no impact on who they are sitting near. Or in this case on the whole top deck as it filled.

@JandamiHash

As others have said it's the one sided monologue plus people offer talk loudly or have on speakerphone because of the noisy train or bus etc and when it goes on for ages.

I was always brought up not to disturb others around me so it's probably in my psyche.

GreenYellowBrown · 01/02/2025 12:57

I’m actually embarrassed for you 🤦‍♀️

There are good reasons not to start a verbal fight on public transport as anyone who lives in certain areas knows. That’s why I very briefly used like for like and wow she was outraged at being disturbed in her self absorbed antisocial activity!!

suburburban · 01/02/2025 12:59

Yes she sounds selfish and self absorbed tbh. Was she sat right next to you or in the seat in front

Tryingtokeepitreal · 01/02/2025 13:00

Yanbu. It's v rude. If it was two people talking on the bus they usually adjust the volume and it's not as intrusive. One person on phone always seems so loud and so entitled.

suburburban · 01/02/2025 13:00

On a lighter note

Remember Sybil in Fawlty Towers on 'phone droning on and John Cleese

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

Stop making calls on speaker phone or video calls in public. Holding it out in front of you like an idiot.
You are a cretin and no one wants to hear you.

HTH

Saying “excuse me you are being quite loud” is not starting a verbal fight. However playing music to make a point is very antagonistic and was met with the contempt it deserved.

For a moron who can't consider other people it absolutely can be the start of a fight.
It's antagonistic (so proud of you learning new words😍) to play loud music but not antagonistic to talk loudly?

Tryingtokeepitreal · 01/02/2025 13:09

How dare she make as much noise as me 🤣 🤣 🤣

Have you actually ever lived in a big city? You don’t seem to have learnt never to pick a verbal fight. That would be fine in a “nice” area where people still automatically behave sociably. This wasn’t in a “nice” area. As she indeed did, I knew I would get verbal abuse back. This included telling her phone recipient about the terrible ridiculous experience she was having with a mad old lady. And laughing. A very nice woman who would have course stopped the phone call as soon as I pointed out she was disturbing everyone. I used to love travelling on public transport.

Oh dear, bless your heart I don’t think you know what antagonistic means. Never mind. We can’t all have the basics in life.

mustgetoffmn · 01/02/2025 13:20

JandamiHash · 01/02/2025 12:18

I rarely use public transport but from what I can see people just scroll the internet and only the truly inconsiderate like yourself play loud music.

You don’t need WiFi to make a phone call or play music anyway. Bus companies need an incentive for people to travel. Wi-Fi is a huge incentive

Now who is being childish? I don’t ever and wouldn’t ever play loud music in public. Don’t bother to come back with the statement that I did. You really need to read the post properly and understand it

I have lived all over the world and if I’m put out by someone’s behaviour I always used my words. You’d be surprised how often people say “oh sorry” and didn’t realise they were causing a nuisance.

If you live in such a rough area why would you try and wind her up rather than have a chat?

What was childish about my post?!

I don’t ever and wouldn’t ever play loud music in public

Except today 😂 did you think the other people on the bus didn’t count it as playing loud music? Do you not think it was annoying for others?

JandamiHash · 01/02/2025 13:23

OP did you or did you not play music from your phone on the bus? Because in your OP you clearly stated you did but you’re then getting really mad at people saying you did

dreamcatchlavender · 01/02/2025 12:45

Why assume everyone has headphones? Why should people be forced to use them due to the increasing antisocial behaviour?
