Mobile phones used on buses

I’ve just lost it. I boarded a bus which was empty upstairs I had a lot of shopping and took the front seat it was a 50 minute journey. A woman got on and took the other free front seat took her phone out lodged it in between her ear and shoulder and settled into a chat. She was speaking continuously. I thought annoying but hopefully she would get off soon or end the call. She didn’t. After half an hour I decided to play some music without phones to drown her out . Passive aggressive but I was pretty wound up by then. She paused and asked me to turn the music off. I replied that her call was antisocial in a public place. It turned into a big row with a man behind calling me a Karen (of course) and telling me she had the right and I should have just moved. In the end I just moved downstairs. He was pretty nasty possibly drunk. Am I being unreasonable and should have just moved? I’m on public transport a lot and the antisocial behaviour is getting to me.

Why would I take the trouble to type out a whole made up story? Please read the post before giving a (very young? Immature) response. I travel a lot on public transport in a large city. I am forced to ignore this behaviour all the time but suddenly flipped. The person who wanted to have a private conversation in a public place should have sat at the back of the empty bus.

But it clearly wasn’t that much of a private conversation if she don’t mind having it near people.

Life is busy, sometimes it’s the only time people can squeeze others in. Chill out. It’s someone having a nice catch up with a friend. How can you possibly be mad about things like friendships. There are problems in the world and this ain’t one of them

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 01/02/2025 11:19

Please write to TFL.

The more we complain about this plague, the more they will listen.

Please read my post I don’t ever play loud music in public.

Except you just did. You are officially in that category of person.

And maybe the other person doesn’t ever have phone calls in public” but just did today.

I’m hoping this is satire but you never know with MN 😂

Thegoatliesdownonbroadway · 01/02/2025 11:22

Round my way, the people on the bus are talking on their mobiles in foreign languages. It's like the tower of Babel.

mitogoshigg · 01/02/2025 11:23

Yabu, music out loud is antisocial, she wasn't on speakerphone so what is your problem???

queenofthewild · 01/02/2025 11:25

FaceTime calls are everywhere. It drives me insane that people blather on about their lives for bloody hours completely disregarding the comfort of those around them, and often disregarding the privacy of those they are talking about.

Exactly. This is how anti social behaviour acts out- people following their own desires whilst selfishly not considering it might impact on others.

We are all busy which is why travelling peacefully is important.

It's everywhere and increasingly reminds me of the Doctor Who episode where everyone's brains were affected by the fact they were constantly hooked up to a phone, wi-fi!

MelisandeLongfield · 01/02/2025 11:40

This reminds me of the time I was on an early train, travelling to a work event - journey was about two hours. A man behind me decided to call his wife/partner as he had call minutes to use up; she apparently was just getting up and having breakfast. He proceeded to give her an incredibly banal running commentary of what he could see out of the window "There's ASDA, the car park is quite full. There's a Shell petrol station" etc. He wasn't doing anything wrong, but it was unbelievably irritating. After 40 minutes of it, I moved to another carriage.

What are you on about?

Oh right you were serious.

First of all, places exist outside of London.

Secondly, you want talking to be banned on public transport?! Why? Of all the world’s problems, that’s a pressing issue?

I hope the complaints department of TfL get a good giggle out of some people

A bit like you playing loud music? Did you not consider the other passengers before you selfishly decided to be passive aggressive.

Honestly OP, if you were so bothered why didn’t you use your words? You’re a grown up! And even then accept she’d have a right to tell you no she wouldn’t be ending her phone call.

You have a right to travel on public transport from A to B. You do not have a right to travel peacefully. If you want peace drive or pay for a taxi. Or get some headphones and listen to a podcast

Thegoatliesdownonbroadway · 01/02/2025 11:45

Phones in the gym, that is something I dislike. People who are supposed to be working from home, in the gym, so they have to answer straight away so that it looks like they are at home when in fact they are in the gym. There are signs everywhere asking people to take calls outside the gym.

Yes maybe I will. Thing is people ignore posters etc. TFL even boast when they manage to offer WiFi on some services.

I see your bus and raise you a hospital ward. At 2am.

.... I raise you in church at a funeral .....

... and she answered before scuttled out after outraged stares

... and this was in 2005 so 20 years ago

Heathershimmerwinner · 01/02/2025 11:56

I know this dosent answer your question, but this is the reason I passed my driving test. Bus rage is real!!!

Edited

It’s not about “rights”. This isn’t a post about legality or fighting an important cause. It’s a despairing post about alienation and lack of social courtesy. Of not respecting those around you, not taking them in. You get it all the time on public transport especially.

Erm …. At the moment most of the underground doesn’t have WiFi. If they install we will all be trapped in carriages with people enjoying long noisy phone calls and watching films of their choice, listening to music without headphones.
