What 'old lady' things you will refuse to do

Following this thread https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/_chat/5253796-your-old-lady-habitstastes?page=28&reply=141706023 it was things like doing puzzle books, wearing big knickers etc.

What 'old lady' things would you refuse to do now and in the future?

Mine include wearing beige and brown. It does not look good on me. My skin tones and personality love bold bright colours.

Wearing skirts. TBF I cannot remember the last time I wore a skirt - perhaps to a wedding nor my 74 year old DM.

Have the same foods each day of the week. I know/knew of old people where they ate the same foods each day of the week. Pork chops on Monday, pie on Tuesday etc. Had upset customers asking me if we had any pork chops in as "always have them on Mondays". Plus if their birthdays/anniversary fell on a certain day of the week, their meal plans don't change!

When there is the word snow mentioned in the weather forecast, clear the shelves of tinned soup. Don't get this at all as there are better warming things than sodding soup.

I thought old ladies liked bright flowery clothes...not beige and brown

I would wear a skirt but I have a big gut

I wear flowery dresses but I always have. You don't spend your youth and middle age wearing chic suits etc and start wearing flowery frocks when you get older. You don't spend your life wearing colourful flowery frocks and suddenly start wearing beige.

That's the point, you continue to be who you have always been.

There is a massive difference between “I won’t wear beige because it doesn’t suit me” and “I won’t wear beige because it is an old lady colour” though, @Auburngal.

Or (sadly) "I wont wear red because now it's an old lady colour". I mean, that poem "when I am old I will wear purple" with its implication that purple is only for mad old bats?

The good thing about fashion is that things come round again, maybe by the time I'm really ancient United Colours of Bennetton will be back in. (The bad thing about fashion is that things which really suited me and were in fashion 10 years ago, I can't get at all now.)

I’ve always been very alternative, so I have a lot of tattoos and I don’t plan on covering them or removing them as I get older. Same with some of my piercings and my style. Although I’m not sure I’ll get away with wearing fishnet tights when I’m 80

I've got no plans to remove my nose piercing when I get older. I suspect some of my friends already think it looks silly now I'm in my late fifties, but I couldn't give a hoot.

Agree and the amount of ignorance on here about Talc is actually hilarious, can honestly say that I have never used talc on a patient for at least 20+ years ,whatever their age 🤷‍♀️

Agree talc use seems to have really gone out the window these days, presumably because of the asbestos risk. When I was in my teens and twenties I regularly used to get given gift sets that included scented talc, can't remember the last time I saw any around though.

Talc nowadays doesn't include the products containing asbestos. Notwithstanding that, the quantitities required to instigate a detrimental cancerous effect were significant.

I have loved a flowery frock since my late teens. They suit. Thank you to the late Laura Ashley. I moved onto Liberty and latterly Seatsalt. 😀

Flowery frocks are very back in fashion, so even if we don't want to follow trends, we just do.😁

That style of glasses seems to be the norm for 20 something art students - not the older generation 😂

@Tagyoureit yep....to be honest I see that style much more on the "younger" generation.
The ones on the bottom left are pretty much the same as what my daughter had a couple of years ago when she was 14.

I'm not going to cut my hair short. Because after, 'A certain age' you have to cut your hair off. I went nearly totally bald at one time in my life because of medical stuff and I'm keeping my long hair thankyou very much. Even if it does threaten to strangle me in the night unless I plait it.

A lot of the time that's not through choice though. Sadly your hair will thin as you get older and the texture also changes.
The old ladies still rocking long hair are probably just lucky enough not to be left with a few dry, straggly wisps on their head!

You’ll be old one day. If you’re lucky

You may then be less smug

I'm going to drink fizzy drinks and eat sweets and ice cream.

I think it's a shame that this thread has had such a negative reaction, compared to the other one, which was about the same things, and really fun.

The original thread was really positive though with people stating all the things they loved, maybe things associated with older people but so many of the posters were in their 30s so really it was just about cosy stuff which people like, often things that they were introduced to by their grandparents and enjoyed throughout their lives .

This thread seems designed to be negative about things traditionally associated with older people, seems quite unpleasant .

Wear briefs/granny pants. Thongs for life!

Have you seen an ancient arse? If you're lucky, you might have one one day and prefer to cover it up!
