What 'old lady' things you will refuse to do

Following this thread https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/_chat/5253796-your-old-lady-habitstastes?page=28&reply=141706023 it was things like doing puzzle books, wearing big knickers etc.

What 'old lady' things would you refuse to do now and in the future?

Mine include wearing beige and brown. It does not look good on me. My skin tones and personality love bold bright colours.

Wearing skirts. TBF I cannot remember the last time I wore a skirt - perhaps to a wedding nor my 74 year old DM.

Have the same foods each day of the week. I know/knew of old people where they ate the same foods each day of the week. Pork chops on Monday, pie on Tuesday etc. Had upset customers asking me if we had any pork chops in as "always have them on Mondays". Plus if their birthdays/anniversary fell on a certain day of the week, their meal plans don't change!

When there is the word snow mentioned in the weather forecast, clear the shelves of tinned soup. Don't get this at all as there are better warming things than sodding soup.

Christ, I’m an old lady already. I wear glasses on a cord round my neck, and I can’t remember the last time I wore a skirt. I don’t wear the Velcro-fastening shoes, but I like my Skechers slip-ins, do they count? And I’m not exactly sylph-like these days, so big knickers all the way. And I don’t give a tin shit what anyone thinks about my choices, is that old-ladyish as well?!

I really hope I'm not going to do the thing where I talk at great length about a third party when the person I'm talking to doesnt know them and has no interest in them.

My mum (in her 80s) does this a lot, and has been doing it since her 40s. However, I've noticed one or two of my friends in their early 50s have now started doing too...

This is mine too! I hope I’m self aware enough.

My other one is wearing cardigans.

Ted27 · 30/01/2025 12:42

@Needmorelego

I also intend to be an old lady, I'm 60 this year so maybe I qualify anyway
But going by some of these comments I've been old since I was about 15.
I don't wear beige, doesn't suit me, brown is better on me.
For me the advantage of getting older is that I really don't care what other people think, I wear what I want, live in Sketchers and DMs and do what I want .
I wasn't bothered at all about being 30, 40, or 50. I don't think I'm bothered about being 60, though the idea of being 70 in 10 years time does feel proper old and a bit scary.
Though the women in my family are long lived so I anticipate getting to my 80s. I might stop plucking the huge hair on my chin when I'm 80 and be a proper old lady with whiskers

cbeebiez · 30/01/2025 12:43

My mum is 65 now and she still wears jeans, trainers, has longish bright blonde hair, refuses point blank to ever have a shopping trolley.
I can't see her changing her style or attitude much in the next 10 years and becoming "old lady"

TheStigarette · 30/01/2025 12:44

This is ridiculous ageism and sexism.
Wear and do what the fuck you want.

chargeitup · 30/01/2025 12:45

Do old ladies wear skirts more than any other group? I don't think they do. Most older women I see wear sort of slacks.

And brown? Most older women I see seem to wear patterns in brighter colours.

Wear briefs/granny pants. Thongs for life!

"Granny pants" are generally put over the top of a nappy when attending a medical appointment, I suppose for reasons of modesty and for the practicality of an added, sag-proof layer. I don't think thongs would really do the job, although a thong over a nappy might make the doctor smile!

RosesAndHellebores · 30/01/2025 12:29

Elasticated waist band.
Velcro shoes of the Hotter/Ecco type

However, I do appreciate that health issues may conspire and when I broke my wrist a few years ago I could not do up my trousers.

Becoming rigid in my habits and tight in my spending.

Maybe the tight spending is because they don't have much income anymore

Ageism and misogyny in one thread. Bravo OP.

Exactly. Very tiresome. But not unexpected.

Wear hideous American tan rights or stockings. Black purple or navy for me! Or groovy patterned ones.

Get a blue rinse.

take up bingo

Drink sherry. I prefer a dry white and a glass of Ballycastle

I like that you call it Ballycastle and not Baileys 🤣Ha ha good old Aldi 😉

mamakoukla · 30/01/2025 12:47

Old lady things? When I’ve earned that age, I hope to not care and, within reason, do as I please

BumpyaDaisyevna · 30/01/2025 12:47

I remember when I lived in Milan in my late 20s how elegant the old ladies looked in their two piece tweed jacket and skirt, coiffured hair and leather slip ons. I have been looking forward to being old enough to wear the same ever since!

This jeans and converse things is just me biding time until I really come into my own.

I am finding it increasing hard to drink wine or beer, my body just isn't processing the alcohol properly and large quantities of any liquid just makes me feel too full. I asked DH to buy some sherry (he didn't flinch or question)! I have never bought a bottle in my life but at 53 I am finding a tipple by the fire with a rug over my legs quite exciting! Grin

BigDahliaFan · 30/01/2025 12:50

I love my recently purchased lap tray with a cushion....I've been resisting buying one as I'm not old....but the reality is I do eat my tea in front of the telly...so I might as well have a lap tray.

This is a very ageist thread.

If that's the case it's justified. But it sometimes isn't. I recall my grandparents washing and drying clingfilm and spreading it on the tiles for reuse; and drying wet tissues on radiators! Notwithstanding the turkey leg stretched across days and days.

They were not poor by any stretch of the imagination.

I'm 64 and baulk at many ageist comments on here. I don't think this thread is.

Yes because stinking of piss is a conscious choice women make the day they turn 60....

LetThereBeLove · 30/01/2025 12:40

You'll change your mind. Take it from one who's been there!

What will happen as I age that means I want briefs?

2dogsandabudgie · 30/01/2025 12:53

Puzzle books are very good for the brain so are jigsaw puzzles and sudoku. Important to keep the brain active as you get older as helps prevent dementia.

I watched a news article recently about a lady in her 90s who built lego.

seaelephant · 30/01/2025 12:53

But all those 'old lady' activities are just a product of a certain generation. Women of a certain era learned to knit in school, it was the fashion to have short, curly hair, long skirts were still commonplace. What was normal to them is now seen as 'old'.

Skinny jeans are a good example of this, young'uns today see them as marker of middle age because they're no longer trendy, but I bet a lot of people on this thread wear them anyway! We'll all be seen as 'old ladies' when we're still texting on iphones and not transmitting holograms or whatever comes next 😉

We have misogyny, ageism, and ableism represented on this thread.

I don’t know any old ladies who stink of piss and I’m sure if there are a small few out there it’s likely because of health reasons

Topseyt123 · 30/01/2025 12:54

I already do a few "old lady" things and love it. I'm 58.

I have a two wheeled shopping trolley that I absolutely couldn't do without and I love it. Oh, and I often do wear my glasses on a cord around my neck. Not that I ever actually take them off during the day, but it just feels more secure and keeps me happy. 😃

I almost always wear jeans (denim Bermuda shorts in summer) and t-shirts with cardigans or jumpers over in the winter. I'm happy to wear comfortable granny pants as thongs would drive me round the bend. I mean, who is looking, and who is going to know??

I wear slip-on shoes (Skechers).

I don't wear dresses or skirts because I just don't like them. Ditto beige and brown.

We'll all stink of piss one day.

Also I fucking love a sherry and always have. I'm 38.

BobbyBiscuits · 30/01/2025 12:54

I think if I get to old age I'm gonna be acting like an old lady, whether I choose to or not!
I can't imagine doing needlepoint or knitting. Or puzzle books. But that's because when/if I get old there will be other hobbies that older people are into. More technology based stuff?
I'm hoping I won't lose my teeth so won't need dentures.
I love gardening. As well as lying on the couch under a blanket. I can't stand up comfortably for more than about five minutes. I have the bones of a 90yo! And I would love a foot spa! So maybe I'm an old lady already? 🤣
