What 'old lady' things you will refuse to do

Following this thread https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/_chat/5253796-your-old-lady-habitstastes?page=28&reply=141706023 it was things like doing puzzle books, wearing big knickers etc.

What 'old lady' things would you refuse to do now and in the future?

Mine include wearing beige and brown. It does not look good on me. My skin tones and personality love bold bright colours.

Wearing skirts. TBF I cannot remember the last time I wore a skirt - perhaps to a wedding nor my 74 year old DM.

Have the same foods each day of the week. I know/knew of old people where they ate the same foods each day of the week. Pork chops on Monday, pie on Tuesday etc. Had upset customers asking me if we had any pork chops in as "always have them on Mondays". Plus if their birthdays/anniversary fell on a certain day of the week, their meal plans don't change!

When there is the word snow mentioned in the weather forecast, clear the shelves of tinned soup. Don't get this at all as there are better warming things than sodding soup.

I think future generations of 'old ladies' will be quite different to the stereotypes you've drawn for us here, OP. For example, the way clothes are made and the way we wear them has changed and that probably means when I'm 'old' I'll wear a variation of what I wear now, not polyester skirts and tan tights because I've never worn those things. (Although, to the PP who insists she'll wear thongs her whole life... report back to us in your 80s please.)

I’ve told my family that if they ever catch me wearing my glasses on a chain then they must take me into the woods and shoot me

I get this is a joke. But it's not very nice.

That’s the beauty of jokes, you can be a bit “not very nice”

My DM is 80 and the only older person thing she does is refuses to get her hearing checked!

I have sworn to myself I will look after myself and. It be stubborn.

As for the fashions I'd swop clothes with my mum any day, she's a jeans and trainers person- Not all older women were old clothes?

"Mummyratbag, could you hear what X was saying?"
"Yes"
"Is it just me or are the actors on X mumbling, the sound is awful?"
"It's just you"
"Perhaps I need my hearing checked"
"Yes you do"

Won't happen even if I offer to take her.. she's lovely though and if I had half her determination even now I'd be happy..

I will never, ever decide to 'just stop bothering' about my appearance. Can still recall my MIL announcing with relish that she was no longer going to wear make up now she'd turned 60!

I will go to my grave wearing carefully applied lipstick and good perfume.

ShadowCalls · 31/01/2025 10:54

I always said I'd never get a reclining chair as hated the look of them, big and ugly and so obviously for old people.

Then I was watching an old episode of Friends and saw the episode where Joey bought a LazyBoy chair and I really want one. Hard to find in the UK but have heard DFS stock them so will have a look.

Don't bother to buy a new one - there are loads available in charity shops and on facebook. I tried to sell one of my Mum's and in the end I couldn't even give it away! I agree they're fab to relax in and I often use Mum's!

I am in my early 70s.

From the age of 13, I wore nylon stockings until tights became readily available. Even back then, in 1965, which is 60 years ago, the shade "American Tan" was considered old fashioned by teenagers and young women. Those of us born in the early 50s are now of an age that the OP probably considers heading towards "old lady" or already "old ladies".

I have never worn "American Tan" stockings or tights and I have no intention of starting to wear them now. Why would I?

I've never worn skirts much and I don't intend to start wearing them just because I am in my 70s. I wear pretty much what I have worn for the last 25 years - straight or skinny jeans, biker boots, denim shirts, T shirts and polo neck sweaters.

I have very few grey hairs and don't colour my hair. But if and when I do go grey or white, why would I decide to have a "blue rinse"?

There are some very odd ideas on here about what "old ladies" wear and do.

AgnesX · 31/01/2025 11:09

What age does this old lady thing start at??

DesteB · 31/01/2025 11:09

If i fell i would never ever say"I had a fall". I would just say i tripped or fell. I cringe when i hear a younger person saying it.

Sorry, I wasn't clear, I meant to say I really want a LazyBoy chair as like the look of them, may change my mind when I actually see one of course!.
Agree the usual recliners are comfortable, my mother had one, but really wouldn't want one in my house unless I had no choice.

Yes - search for LazyBoy or Lazy Boy or La-Z-Boy - they're on Facebook Marketplace. They are big. Try one for size in DFS. Good luck!

Same age as 'old enough to know better.' (half past never)

CaptainMyCaptain · 31/01/2025 11:46

I'm 70 this year and used to get told off wearing charcoal grey tights at school in the late 60s instead of tan. They were old fashioned then.

Yes, one day lots of tattoos and piercings will be 'old lady things', whereas previously, it was wearing a twinset (jumper/cardigan) with pearls, and sporting a shampoo and set.

tinseltitss · 31/01/2025 12:03

I'm embracing getting old and wearing comfortable clothing and shoes, although I have worn Doc Marten's for decades and will carry on doing so as they are comfy and practical. I love long flared skirts and dresses with a bit of stretch but I do have a very quirky style, hippy/goth/glam depending on where I am. I'm looking forward to getting away with what I wear instead of being classed as weird to some people.

cranberrytart · 31/01/2025 12:22

Charlottejbt · 30/01/2025 12:45

"Granny pants" are generally put over the top of a nappy when attending a medical appointment, I suppose for reasons of modesty and for the practicality of an added, sag-proof layer. I don't think thongs would really do the job, although a thong over a nappy might make the doctor smile!

  1. Who is wearing a nappy??

  2. Renee Zelweger playing 32 year old Bridget Jones famously wore "granny pants" in Bridget Jones' Diary.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 31/01/2025 12:27

I suspect that the use of the word nappy is a nasty dig at those of us who need to wear some sort of pad, like Tena, @cranberrytart.

When I worked in a care home, nursing dementia, Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty came on and all the residents loved it. I remembered it, not my favourite song, and had to look it up as no one remembered who it was who was singing it. Sorry Gerry x

I was going to have the sax solo from Baker Street for my phone ringtone, but have that good bit at 2:15 mins into "I can't get no sleep" instead. RIP Maxi Jazz.

NovemberMorn · 31/01/2025 12:54

The old ladies of today are the Marianne Faithful's of yesterday.
Hardly the tan tights and big knickers type.😏

Women of all ages wear comfortable clothes and shoes now, it's not an old lady thing. Loose and oversized is in fashion.

NovemberMorn · 31/01/2025 13:05

I wear Sketchers.😎

Such a shame the Mary Whitehouse fun sponges have found this thread. Can you not take your humourless selves elsewhere?
