What 'old lady' things you will refuse to do

Following this thread https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/_chat/5253796-your-old-lady-habitstastes?page=28&reply=141706023 it was things like doing puzzle books, wearing big knickers etc.

What 'old lady' things would you refuse to do now and in the future?

Mine include wearing beige and brown. It does not look good on me. My skin tones and personality love bold bright colours.

Wearing skirts. TBF I cannot remember the last time I wore a skirt - perhaps to a wedding nor my 74 year old DM.

Have the same foods each day of the week. I know/knew of old people where they ate the same foods each day of the week. Pork chops on Monday, pie on Tuesday etc. Had upset customers asking me if we had any pork chops in as "always have them on Mondays". Plus if their birthdays/anniversary fell on a certain day of the week, their meal plans don't change!

When there is the word snow mentioned in the weather forecast, clear the shelves of tinned soup. Don't get this at all as there are better warming things than sodding soup.

The only people I know wearing beige and brown are young women.

What's with the obsession with incontinence on this thread??? It's not a given just because you reach a certain age 😆

Watch countryfile. Enjoy hiking or whatever it is they do with those poles. Have a padded lap tray

I love Countryfile, it's one of the best things on tv

If that's the case it's justified. But it sometimes isn't. I recall my grandparents washing and drying clingfilm and spreading it on the tiles for reuse; and drying wet tissues on radiators! Notwithstanding the turkey leg stretched across days and days.

They were not poor by any stretch of the imagination.

I think if you've lived through rationing and shortages, you develop those habits.

JoyousGreyOrca · 30/01/2025 18:20

Getting in tinned soup if it is going to snow is sensible if it is not going to be safe for you to go outside, and you do not have money to fully heat your house.
Snow and ice can be very dangerous for anyone who is not totally steady on their feet.

Nope I am going to fully relish in being an official "old lady". I would possibly be an eccentric one and poke people with a walking stick.
At what age can I start this? I'm 50 this year. Is that too young?

I’ve told my family that if they ever catch me wearing my glasses on a chain then they must take me into the woods and shoot me

Unpleasant thread. Some posters on here are in for a shock as they get older and the things they are currently laughing at become part and parcel of life.

Totally

I work with older people and have elderly parents. Don't assume you'll be driving and wearing thongs forever. Old age has a nasty habit of creeping up on you in ways you can't imagine.

allmycats · 30/01/2025 18:29

I am 67 years old and love the look on people’s faces when I take my crash helmet off and park my bike up. Yes, I have a full motorcycle license but have recently had to move down from my 900cc bike to a 600 due to the weight of the bloody thing !

SnowyintheATL · 30/01/2025 18:33

I guess I'd rather do "old lady" things than to die young before getting the chance to. 😊

LetThereBeLove · 30/01/2025 18:49

TallulahBetty · 30/01/2025 13:03

Yes but how? I genuinely don't understand!

Look at older women - in most cases they weigh more than they did when younger and there is more flab around the body than before. Comfort becomes a priority for many, although I am of the firm belief that we should continue to wear what we like, no matter what other people think. I can't think of anything worse than having a string (aka thong) up my arse in my older years!

ShadowCalls · 30/01/2025 19:05

Waitingfordoggo · 30/01/2025 13:39

I mean this is what 'old ladies' wore in the 80s. Each generation carries their own fashions and preferences into old age (possibly with a few adjustments for comfort and practicality).

Elderly women in 50 years' time will all be covered in tattoos.

And the tattoos will age as skin becomes saggy and muscle tone is lost. How the younger generation will laugh...

Londonismyjam · 30/01/2025 19:05

JoyousGreyOrca · 30/01/2025 13:22

@Augustus40 There comes a point where elderly people dying their hair when their complexion has gone grey, just looks totally fake and a bit strange. If you are still going to dye your hair, you are better to go for totally artificial colours like bright pink or green.

They can dye their hair whatever colour they like. So judgmental…like a lot of this thread 🙄

I’ve told my family that if they ever catch me wearing my glasses on a chain then they must take me into the woods and shoot me

Well... I used to think like that until I had to wear reading glasses and kept taking them off, putting them down and then not being able to find them. I think my family would have willingly shot me every time I shouted "Anyone seen my glasses?". So they're on a chain now - well actually it's more like a multicoloured bootlace but it keeps them close by!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 30/01/2025 19:09

There's nothing 'old lady' about beige and brown. They are just colours. Plenty of beige and brown on young people and in fashion magazines etc. Though they probably call them shades other than beige and brown! Nothing old about skirts either.

You don't have to be incontinent to need a bit of knicker protection as your pelvic floor weakens (especially if you've had children). A sneeze, a cough, laughter, too much coffee... 😳

EliosBackPack · 30/01/2025 19:16

I’m an Old Lady and don’t do any of those things…except wear my reading glasses on a chain, otherwise always losing them/can’t find the bloody things). Also tried a thong once, most uncomfortable thing I’ve ever worn, so always wear comfortable knickers - but not “old lady ones.”

I know people who have worn protection for decades…it really isn’t an ‘old’ problem. I just find apart from the ageism ,the general ignorance on here quite breathtaking !

I'm hoping I don't say to my children "I can't see you next Wednesday as I have a doctor's appointment at 10am, let's make it Thursday". I see that a lot in elderly relatives and it worries me.

I don't know what's old lady about having to keep a doctor's appointment!

People wait weeks/months for medical appointments, unfortunately, regardless of age.

I think her point is that people can only do one thing in a day. My DM is definately like this.

bigkahunaburger · 30/01/2025 19:49

I think glasses on a chain look really cool. Ive already got horn-rimmed glasses because I think they look cool, so I cant wait til i need them all the time and I will get a beaded chain. I do have a quirky style though, but I love stuff like that.

Im also annoyed that Im not grey yet. Im 50 with mad curly red hair. I absolutely love how grey hair looks - I wanna be Andie McDowall so bad. lol

Sandinyourshoes · 30/01/2025 20:17

Always thought I would never cut my hair short. Then had to get chemo, so here I am with short hair, and will never grow it long again because it’s so wonderful not having hair flying about my face and catching on my specs. I succumbed to the school knickers long ago - we used to have to wear our big knickers for PE lessons, so its a return to schooldays in a way.

My mother was like this as well. Because of her health problems (which she didn’t tell even close family about for years) getting ready to go out by a specific time took a huge effort and she had to rest for the remainder of the day.

There no such thing as “old lady things”.

My nana had a perm, as did all her friends, because that was the fashion in the 50s. She wore skirts and tights, ditto.

My mum and all her friends, the new generation of older ladies, have a short stylish chop and wear jeans.

When I am an old lady, wearing black leggings and white trainers, eyebrow pencil and curled hair will be “old lady things”.

You cannot escape the march of time, or of ageism.

Edited

This. 'Old lady' things are just 'things' that are fashionable/popular for that generation.

There are some things the older generations do/did that we may appreciate more as we get older though.
