What 'old lady' things you will refuse to do

Following this thread https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/_chat/5253796-your-old-lady-habitstastes?page=28&reply=141706023 it was things like doing puzzle books, wearing big knickers etc.

What 'old lady' things would you refuse to do now and in the future?

Mine include wearing beige and brown. It does not look good on me. My skin tones and personality love bold bright colours.

Wearing skirts. TBF I cannot remember the last time I wore a skirt - perhaps to a wedding nor my 74 year old DM.

Have the same foods each day of the week. I know/knew of old people where they ate the same foods each day of the week. Pork chops on Monday, pie on Tuesday etc. Had upset customers asking me if we had any pork chops in as "always have them on Mondays". Plus if their birthdays/anniversary fell on a certain day of the week, their meal plans don't change!

When there is the word snow mentioned in the weather forecast, clear the shelves of tinned soup. Don't get this at all as there are better warming things than sodding soup.

The old ladies of today are the Marianne Faithful's of yesterday.
Hardly the tan tights and big knickers type.😏

Indeed. And these women are the old ladies of today.

Quite! RIP ❤️

OP I hate to break it to you, but beige and brown are very much the choice of many people young and old.

I wear Sketchers.😎

When working in the nursing homes, I wore my mum's sketchers she gave to me that were too big for her. All the young carers loved them (but thought my socks were rubbish 😂)

I always said I'd never get a reclining chair as hated the look of them, big and ugly and so obviously for old people.

Then I was watching an old episode of Friends and saw the episode where Joey bought a LazyBoy chair and I really want one. Hard to find in the UK but have heard DFS stock them so will have a look.

My mum had a couple of these and during visits we'd gravitate towards them... the most comfortable chairs in the house!

My MIL on the other hand has upright furniture that is just too small and firm to get comfy - it suits her as she is quite small, and she is the sort of person who always sits upright with both feet on the floor, rather than curled up or with her feet up, but I'd rather sit on my mum's recliners.

Op is only interested in stereotypes, not actual reality.

Ridiculous thread.

scalt · 31/01/2025 16:13

@chattyness So, all you youngsters raging at the the machine and rejecting old ladyism, do you wish to be known as non - granary perhaps ?
That is so brilliant!

@Balloonhearts My brother, then aged 8, was so fascinated by ladies who wore spectacle chains, such as our approaching-retirement headmistress, that he wanted one for his glasses. Unfortunately, he kept chewing through them, even metal ones!

There was a time in the 90s when teenagers rejected wearing trainers, because they were seen as "what oldies wear"; Doc Martens were popular instead. And yes, I know that DMs are loved by the old ladies on the other thread.

Blackadder once said "I have no intention of dying. I want to be young and wild, then middle-aged and rich, then old and annoy people by pretending I'm deaf."

I don't care if its a fashionable colour. Regardless what colour they call it almond, oatmeal, stone brown - its still beige. These colours do not suit me and same to other people.

People need to understand that not all the latest fashions, styles and colours don't suit them all the time. I remember when one summer, the trend was light pastels - think very pale baby blue, and white. Too pale for me. I'm into my bright blues, greens, purples, pinks. Plus navy and dark khaki suit me better.

I think it's a shame that this thread has had such a negative reaction, compared to the other one, which was about the same things, and really fun.

Probably because of the ridiculous ageist stereotypes from the 1970s.

Yes. I mean, foist your ageist stereotypes on people if you must, but don't come on here and expect applause.

I would rather shove wasps up my arse than do a puzzle book, or get into my pyjamas at 6 pm, but a quick glance at Mn will show you that there are people of all ages doing these things.

There is a massive difference between “I won’t wear beige because it doesn’t suit me” and “I won’t wear beige because it is an old lady colour” though, @Auburngal.

Couldbysunny · 31/01/2025 18:14

Ha I'm doing them all now!! I love brown, i only wear very comfortable flat shoes, I wear big comfortable knickers... I'm 37 🤣
I hope I never start getting up at 5am though. My gran used to do that and just sit downstairs every single day. Nothing to do and nowhere to go at that time.. thats just when she always woke up. It's understandable if you have something it's necessary for.. like going running or feeding your chickens or something..
But she didn't do anything but wait for other people to wake up.

Couldbysunny · 31/01/2025 18:15

Oh and I LOVE puzzles. Word puzzles, sudoku, crosswords. But I always have.
I used to do class A drugs and go to raves under bridges.. I still had my sudoku puzzle book on me at all times!!

"Granny pants" are generally put over the top of a nappy when attending a medical appointment, I suppose for reasons of modesty and for the practicality of an added, sag-proof layer. I don't think thongs would really do the job, although a thong over a nappy might make the doctor smile!

You’ve lost me there.

henlake7 · 31/01/2025 19:15

I plan on slapping myself if I ever limit myself from things based solely on my age.
So I suppose thinking of myself as an old lady is what I refuse to do.

I'd rather age disgracefully like Miriam Margolyes!😆

Redheadedstepchild · 31/01/2025 19:26

I'm not going to cut my hair short. Because after, 'A certain age' you have to cut your hair off. I went nearly totally bald at one time in my life because of medical stuff and I'm keeping my long hair thankyou very much. Even if it does threaten to strangle me in the night unless I plait it.

doodahdayy · 31/01/2025 19:29

Beige isn't old lady. This colour has been popular with young people for ages

RunSlowTalkFast · 31/01/2025 19:30

Read the first post, looked down at my brown corduroy mini skirt and thought 'nah, I look good!' 😄

Why do you think you have to cut your hair off 😂

My hair is long. My age is 69.

Same here. Nobody ever told me I should cut my hair.
