Been signed off work for 6 weeks post surgery and need some recommendations. I really like gripping dramas and also black comedy.

Things I’ve really enjoyed:

⁃	Day of the Jackall
⁃	Happy Valley
⁃	The end of the f*ing world
⁃	A very English Scandal
⁃	The Crown
⁃	Last Tango in Halifax
⁃	Black Doves

Any suggestions??

Bad Sisters is absolutely brilliant.

Ted Lasso. Utterly brilliant and you don't need to be a football fan.

Lots here that I agree with. Apple TV has some great stuff (Bad Sisters, Slow Horses, Severance, etc). On other platforms, I would also recommend Am I Being Unreasonable, Back to Life and After Life. More comedy/social commentary than drama, but I liked them.

NoCarbsForMe · 24/01/2025 08:04

NoCarbsForMe · 24/01/2025 08:07

Yellowstone is totally gripping but extremely violent and not funny (well not intentionally anyway)

NoCarbsForMe · 24/01/2025 08:09

Oh Ted Lasso is brilliant! Loved it SO much. Comedy. Wholesome. Not dark. I was sad when it ended.

NoCarbsForMe · 24/01/2025 08:11

Better things on Disney is excellent. So easy to binge. Loved it. Not dark though. Just really watchable. Sweet. Moving.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/01/2025 08:28

Slow horses (not funny but gripping) what do you mean 'not funny'? It's black comedy.

Seahorsesplendour · 24/01/2025 08:29

The Cormoran Strike series

A minority vote for radio plays and audiobooks, which I get from BBC Sounds, Amazon's audible and you-tube

Listening means I can get on with other stuff to keep my hands occupied and somehow feels more productive than just watching. My eyes get tired quickly in a way that my ears never seem to do.

Hope you get well soon

I'd make an exception for the old series which I have intermittently found upstairs downstairs, house of Elliot, The Onedin Line, check out classic and period frame on BBC player

For those who loved Ted Lasso, if you haven’t already watched Scrubs (which is 25-odd years old now 😱) then you really should.

Created and written by Bill Lawrence (who also created/wrote Ted lasso) it follows a medical intern, his trainee surgeon roommate and their friends as they complete their training and residency in a hospital. It’s hilarious, and also heartbreaking at times, and has some great cameos including Brendan Fraser and Colin Farrell.

It often gets quoted by medical professionals as one of the most realistic depictions of working in a US hospital on TV and many of the cases/patients they come up against are based on real life ones that Bill Lawrence’s best friend has seen during his time as an actual Dr (he acted as a consultant on the show and the main character is named after him - JD). I won’t spoil anything but for those that have seen the show, all I will say is “Ass Box” 😜🤣

What was the crime thriller type show with Jamie Dornan in it? That was quite good...
There was also one that had a woman that was drugged by the man, maybe in a seaside flat?
Gosh I am so very helpful!

Helpful 😅

Aintgointogoa · 24/01/2025 18:06

Slow Horses

wonderingisthisokay · 24/01/2025 18:12

fingerbobz · 24/01/2025 17:57

Helpful 😅

The one with Jamie Dornan also had Mrs Durrell in it and she was a politician, right? I watched it with my Dad in the evenings on a ski trip, if that helps. 😂

wonderingisthisokay · 24/01/2025 18:14

No wait, it was Richard Madden (Bodyguard), sorry. Even LESS helpful!

TheRozzers · 24/01/2025 18:15

Right just finished Playing Nice which I thought was ok. Not my favourite but the 4 episodes kept me entertained and James Norton is always a treat to watch.

Will give Slow Horses another try.
