Been signed off work for 6 weeks post surgery and need some recommendations. I really like gripping dramas and also black comedy.

Things I’ve really enjoyed:

⁃	Day of the Jackall
⁃	Happy Valley
⁃	The end of the f*ing world
⁃	A very English Scandal
⁃	The Crown
⁃	Last Tango in Halifax
⁃	Black Doves

Any suggestions??

Blue Lights
The A Word
Ludwig
Slow Horses (AppleTV)
Strike

Not UK but still want to recommend for dark humour:
Bad Sisters
Deadloch

In the last couple of months we've enjoyed The Devil's Hour, Cheaters, Playing Nice, Peep Show (again), Squid Games 2.

24 hours in police custody is fascinating and at times horrifying but gripping

mateysmum · 23/01/2025 18:11

Lot's of good ideas. I'd add:

Detectorists
Industry
old series like Brideshead Revisited and The Jewel in the Crown on ITVX - absolute classics
Not British, but Mad Men - utterly brilliant and perfect for binge watching

TheRozzers · 23/01/2025 18:12

Some brilliant suggestions thank you! I need to be hooked in the first 10 minutes, I'm not into slow burners.

Unforgotten
Broadchuch
The Devil’s Hour

And not yet mentioned I think
Stonehouse
A Very British Scandal (same makers as “..English”)
Cardiac Arrest (old but fab)

Pesky Blinders! We’re late to the party but absolutely glued. On iplayer.

I’m making a note of that for a future username somewhere. I used to be peekingduck somewhere else, my avatar was a picture of a shifty look mallard.

Jessica Jones. I was completely hooked.

bakewellbride · 23/01/2025 18:19

I just finished Playing Nice and really enjoyed it. Only 4 episodes though

Santasbigredbobblehat · 23/01/2025 18:20

Ludwig too!

TinyMouseTheatre · 23/01/2025 18:23

Hinterland

Whiteskies · 23/01/2025 18:23

Just aired on BBC so on iPlayer now. Video Nasties, charming horror/comedy set in Ireland and Yorkshire in the 1980s. It's brilliant.

Spooks - old but good
Also waking The Dead
Silent Witness
Unforgotten
Bad Sisters

I'll second 'Unforgotten'. I watched the whole lot last year and it was brilliant.

cleowasmycat · 23/01/2025 18:29

The Crow Girl prime

GordonLaChance · 23/01/2025 18:32

I've just binged Nightsleeper on iplayer, a few good plot twists and action from the off..definitely not a slow burner!

SheilaFentiman · 23/01/2025 18:32

New series of unforgotten out soon!

Tallblacktrees · 23/01/2025 17:59

What was the crime thriller type show with Jamie Dornan in it? That was quite good...
There was also one that had a woman that was drugged by the man, maybe in a seaside flat?
Gosh I am so very helpful!

These sound just what I like. Any more clues?

Slow Horses on Apple is the best thing I've seen in a long time.

NikkiAlexander · 23/01/2025 18:35

The fall is the Jamie Dornan one. The other could be Grace?

WhineAndWine1 · 23/01/2025 18:36

Downtown abbey
Call the midwife
Line of Duty

LivingOnTheVeg · 23/01/2025 18:37

Another vote for Slow Horses. What We Do in The Shadows is great too; it’s not actually British but three of the main cast are so it feels British in a weird way. It’s just finished but there are 6 seasons plus the original film it’s based on.

Snooks1971 · 23/01/2025 18:38

Inside Number 9 (iPlayer)

Mandatoryamanda · 23/01/2025 18:39

It's American but based on what you've watched, you'd probably enjoy Ozark. Narcos is also amazing (especially narcos mexico) but mostly subtitles.

(Black Doves was miles better than I was expecting. Day of the Jackal was disappointing)
