Been signed off work for 6 weeks post surgery and need some recommendations. I really like gripping dramas and also black comedy.

Things I’ve really enjoyed:

⁃	Day of the Jackall
⁃	Happy Valley
⁃	The end of the f*ing world
⁃	A very English Scandal
⁃	The Crown
⁃	Last Tango in Halifax
⁃	Black Doves

Any suggestions??

If you haven’t already seen Inside No.9, I think you would probably enjoy it. It’s an anthology so you get something different to enjoy every episode. All brilliantly written and acted.

I always recommend Criminal UK and Bodies (both British and on Netflix) and The Night Agent.

Is Slow Horses violent and/or nasty? I've heard about it but I've been caught out with people saying something is a 'much watch' and within 10 mins there's a brutal rape, vicious torture or similar 😬

Not really my thing.

If you don't mind subtitles Seaside Hotel on C4 is brilliant. A Danish light comedy/drama with wonderful characters. I've binge watched 10 series over this winter and feel bereft now I've finished it.

broadchurch

line of duty

CaveMum · 23/01/2025 20:35

Mostly already mentioned:

Ghosts
The Cleaner
The Outlaws
Detectorists
What We Do in the Shadows
Slow Horses
Strike (the JK Rowling book adaptations - several series on iPlayer)
SAS Rogue Heroes
Inside Number 9

Definitely Traitors too, each series is stand alone. If you know who ultimately won its quite a big spoiler but you can still have the fun of watching how they got there!

Someone else mentioned The West Wing (Best TV Show Ever Made™️) and you said you don’t like slow burners. It’s not that it’s a slow burner but the first couple of episodes are a little bit twee. It quickly finds its feet though and you can never just watch one episode!

If we’re allowed US series I’ll also add in Ted Lasso and Scrubs, both written/created by Bill Lawrence.

Not really my thing.

There are a few violent moments (fights, shootings and a few dead bodies), but nothing I would describe as “graphic” - I’m pretty squeamish and I coped with it!

Edenmum2 · 23/01/2025 20:42

Slow horses is a must

NeonGiraffe · 23/01/2025 20:44

The West Wing. One of the best US political dramas of all tjme
Scandal - Another US political drama. I'm absolutely hooked on this series
Greys Anatomy - Another brilliant Shonda Rhimes series.

I love all three of these series. All utterly brilliant.

Did you miss the "UK" part of OP's post? 😄

anxietyaboutanxiety · 23/01/2025 20:47

Kin - best thing I watched all year (bbc)
No Offence (Channel 4)

The West Wing is wonderful. From the days when US politics was normal.

Mittens67 · 23/01/2025 20:53

Downton Abbey
This is us
The Good Wife
Scott and Bailey (bit older but still excellent)

1990s · 23/01/2025 21:00

Pesky Blinders, best typo for ages.

some cracking stuff on here but repeating Inside No. 9, Industry, Years and Years was mentioned, that hits even harder these days!

paulhollywoodshairgel · 23/01/2025 21:04

The Fall
Wolf hall

cheapskatemum · 23/01/2025 21:05

Oops, sorry, Yellowstone is US, not UK. Replace with It's a Sin.

TinyMouseTheatre · 23/01/2025 21:07

DD made me watch Wolf last year. Terrifying but brilliant.

NC28 · 23/01/2025 21:11

Vigil

Doctor Foster

Both starting Suranne Jones. She’s a fantastic actor, I’d watch anything she was in.

Rainbow450 · 23/01/2025 21:15

The tower
Ray
Sherwood
The Capture
Kiri

Not sure which channels but terrestrial. All very enjoyable.

Rainbow450 · 23/01/2025 21:18

Sorry some more

Patience
Vigil
Trigger point
Bodyguard

RampantIvy · 23/01/2025 21:21

Late to the party for this one, but I am thoroughly enjoying Benidorm on Netflix.

NoCarbsForMe · 23/01/2025 21:25

Bad Sisters!
If you haven't seen it is brilliant and sooo bingable. On apple.

AQuickDeathInTexas · 23/01/2025 21:33

The Night Manager, I think it has a similar filming style to Day of the Jackal

WhatICallMyUsername · 23/01/2025 22:20

Another vote for The Split! There's just been two episodes on over Christmas set in Barcelona and it's made me want to go back and rewatch them all! Love Nicola Walker!

Latenightreader · 23/01/2025 22:25

An older series, but if you can find Tenko you should watch it. Outstanding stuff.
