I don’t defend Trump. And when did we start using the word ‘felon’ instead of ‘criminal’

When he was convicted, he officially, legally became a felon. Again, you can inform yourself if you want.

Seriously, what are you doing on this thread? Why not go elsewhere on the site? Ah, right, because you're enjoying making people uncomfortable and upset because that's who you are?

Sad resignation maybe?

Nothing to add but profound sadness. Glad to have this thread, thank you.

Federal employees have now received emails warning that they could face repercussions if they do not report on co-workers who work in diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility positions that might have gone unnoticed by government supervisors.

He is American. That is the term they use

We are using it because of that

I'm at a loss to understand why you are posting. Except to gleefully poke at posters who feel rather uncomfortable about Trump winning

Could you explain why you are here maybe? And I would be more than happy to have a robust conversation if so

user22446688 · 23/01/2025 15:21

@DuncinToffee

Yes, good thing he had no plans to put anything from Project 2025 in place.
Last night's Deadline Whitehouse was horrifying. Just horrifying.

But on a more amusing note, do Republicans actually place ads recruiting the stupidest people on the planet as candidates?

We (Americans) use it differentiate between someone who is convicted of the most serious class of crimes (felonies) vs more minor crimes, such as misdemeanours, which also technically make the person a criminal.

You don't live here. It's easy to roll your eyes from a distance but those of us living here (and those elsewhere with an ounce of compassion) understand why so many of us are upset and/or frightened. We are already seeing the rights and protections for certain segments of the population eroded and fear 'who's next'.

I'm sure there was plenty of eyerolling from afar in 1933 at the fears of certain members of the German population, too. I'm not saying Scrotus (yes, I coined it and will use it, it's an acronym for So Called Ruler Of The United States) is Hitler, but he has praised him and his generals in the past.

If you think what my Country is facing over the next four years is humorous, all I can say is that I hope you never have to face similar fears. But if you do, don't come crying to us. Or rather, do. We'll support you in your fears, but you'll also hear "We told you so".

FWIW I'm nominally white, Christian, straight, and post menopausal. DH and I are financially secure. Chances are we won't be personally affected by the policies he's promising, other than through inflation. But that doesn't mean I shouldn't or won't worry about my family members, friends, and neighbours or even people I don't know.

Gal 6:2 "Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ."

Or if you can't relate to that, then how about Bobby Scott & Bob Russell;

"He aint heavy, he's my brother"

There’s a lot to unpack in your post. I’m sorry people are fearful about what Trump might do. I don’t support him. Help me understand. From my memory, Trump didnt do anything particularly terrible the first time. He seems like a big bag of wind.

Project 2025
https://www.project2025.org/about/about-project-2025/
Trump tried to distance himself from it but its legislative agenda is already coming to fruition.

He tested the limits of what he could get away with in 2021 now we will see that play out.

He's got immunity for crimes committed while President (thanks to the Supreme Court)
He's just released people who killed police officers from prison

Well I’d like to thank god that these things can’t happen here but someone will no doubt be along soon to say that they do…

DuncinToffee · 23/01/2025 16:22

Not just Bolton,

The Trump administration is said to have revoked the security protection for his former secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, and a former top aide [Brian Hook] despite warnings from the Biden administration that both men faced ongoing threats from Iran"

Yes, take a look at the Project 2025 link above to see what we're facing. He has a majority in the House and Senate which means that that agenda is pretty much unstoppable barring court cases. Oh wait, I forgot he has the SCOTUS in his pocket, too.

The prime directive of a POTUS in his 1st term is to be elected to a 2nd term, so as a rule all 1st term POTUSi (POTUSes?) tend to pedal softly with their agenda to see what they can get away with and still be re-electable. Scrotus did plenty of damage as far as our environment went by backing off EPA regs and authorizing drilling in Federal lands. He also tried but largely failed to gut the ACA, thanks due to a Dem majority (and Sen John McCain RIP). And let's not even start with the Covid epidemic (swallow bleach, anyone?).

The main fear now is that now in his 2nd term AND with much more 'unchecked' power (thanks to SCOTUS) he will be able to pursue his agenda with a vengeance. And enact vengeance on his 'enemies' (past, present, and future) through the various Federal agencies he now controls, or will control once his toadies are installed.

Even assuming that he only lasts 4 years, the damage he can do may take decades to undo. Sure the next POTUS can write their own EOs to reinstate regulations, and a more favourable Congress can enact laws, but the damage will already be done; to our environment, to healthcare (especially for the poor or uninsured), to human/equal rights, and to our national security. Not to mention our international 'reputation', although that's probably in the toilet already.

But since Project 2025 wishes to turn the US into a Christian theocracy, who knows what changes may be forced through to end the 2 term rule. They've already found a way around it that could very well happen in the 2028 election.

Well I’d like to thank god that these things can’t happen here but someone will no doubt be along soon to say that they do…

I'm not saying they do happen now, but why do you think they can't happen? We certainly felt that our Constitution and its 'balance of powers' along with our belief in the innate fairness of our fellow citizens would protect us. Obviously we (and the Founding Fathers) were wrong. I don't know enough about the checks and balances in Parliament or in the UK power structure to predict your Country's future, but I will say to hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

And to never underestimate the power of the power hungry and the evil. People are people all over the Earth. No country's citizen can claim to not have the evil, the sociopathic, or the power hungry amongst them.

Not to mention that it doesn't have to 'happen here' for the UK to feel the knock on effects.

Trump loves Putin, MBS, Xi (despite the posturing), Orban and Kim Jong Un because he loves dictators. The US creating new axes of alliances could be devastating for Europe and the UK.

He has already made airline travel less safe.

Choice over reproductive health is being grabbed as fast as you can say mifepristone, and if you think people like Farage aren't also interested ways to send women back to the kitchen, you'd be wrong.

He's pulled out of the W.H.O. Possibly not great since H5N1 seems intent on making the jump to human transmission.

He's pulling worldwide health initiatives (the state department operates vitally important ones all over the world).

He's pulled out of the Paris Accords. Countries that care about climate change no longer include the US.

Empowering Elon Musk to interfere in Europe. A Germany under the AFD would not be a welcome development in the UK.

If he does bring in tariffs and move ahead with deportments, goods and services will become more expensive everywhere and UK manufacturers and exports will feel the knock-on effects.

And that's just a start on potential international implications. He's not just blowing hot air. He's already doing these things and has only just begun.

DuncinToffee · 23/01/2025 17:38

Imagine having to listen to this

Trump addresses the World Economic Forum:

"Nothing can destroy coal. Not the weather. Not a bomb. Nothing. It might make it a little smaller. It might make it a little different shaped."

I need to find a link but I think he’s stopped all the cdc data reporting too.

Because I am a glutton for punishment, I listened to it. Not with full attention as I was writing a report. He rambled on like a semi-coherent moron for endless amounts of time, mostly about himself, gasping audibly for air, gave non-answers to a couple of pre-selected softball questions (got into a weird thing about BOA refusing to take conservative money - to the best of my knowledge BAO will takes any money as long as it passes the least stringent checks imaginable) and then went off to sharpie some more pieces of paper.
