Yes terrible Sad

Trump can't even manage to get a decent statement out

"I'm being kept informed and will let you all know". From where? The golf course? Just another way of showing that he thinks he's 1-the fount of all information and 2-is the 'decider' of what the American people should know.

I'll get my updates from my usual news sources, thank you very much.

My prayers to the families of the victims and the 1st responders who are doing the search and rescue/recovery.

DuncinToffee · 30/01/2025 15:42

It's RFK jr, Gabbard and Patel hearings today

user22446688 · 30/01/2025 15:54

The RFK shitshow was yesterday. If you managed to avoid it, I'd recommend keeping it that way.

The tldr is We're all gonna die under this administration.

DuncinToffee · 30/01/2025 16:07

Part 2 of the shitshow is today.

I am not watching it, just see some clips pop up on my bluesky

Piggywaspushed · 30/01/2025 16:18

There ahs already been some political controversy about flights into and out of DC which may feed into the recent awful events, unfortunately

In April 2024, Congress announced a $105b FAA reauthorization bill.
The bill raised hiring targets for air traffic control but it also added flights to Reagan National airport, despite opposition from Democratic senators from Maryland and Virginia.
Democrats Mark Warner and Tim Kaine of Virginia and Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen of Maryland vowed to “continue to fight against this ridiculous and dangerous provision.”
Many of the senators pushing for expanded flights at Washington National – the bill added five incoming and five outgoing flights per day – reportedly wanted more direct routes back to their home states.
“The very title of the ‘Direct Access to the Capital Act’ gives the game away that this bill is written to maximize the personal convenience of a comparatively small number of powerful, well-connected individuals at the expense of safety and efficiency of flights — which should be our top priority,” Don Beyer, a Representative of Virginia, told the Washington Post at the time.
The bill sponsor, Representative Burgess Owens of Utah, defended the bill, saying: “Our effort is not about benefiting one airport, one airline, or any one member of Congress.”

It is an increasingly busy- and also awkward- flight path.

I can only handle the hearings by watching the Bulwark live feed at the moment. I did enjoy yesterday when Marsha Blackburn had to correct him and they speculated what it's like to need to be corrected by someone with (in their estimate) an IQ of 80.

Is it just me, or did Cheyl Hines look sedated?

DuncinToffee · 30/01/2025 16:39

Trump is now basically attacking the Democrats and the DEI, with only a passing reference to those who died and their grieving families

Fucking hell, that speech is unbelievable Angry

heldinadream · 30/01/2025 16:56

Watching subservient idiots sucking up to Trump and praising his 'leadership' in this context feels like one of the most craven and disgusting displays of cynicism I have witnessed in my nearly 70 years.
They are ALL blaming diversity policies. I am astounded at the sheer fucking cheek of these men.

Efacsen · 30/01/2025 17:08

What an awful awful press conference

Empathy-free
Pre-judging the investigation
Ranting about DEI

Shouldn't really expect anything better - sadly

Piggywaspushed · 30/01/2025 17:30

The problem with Trump and co is that they instinctively won't want to blame the military so have backtracked on helicopter pilot error , so now they are blaming the poor ATCs. Surely, he is prejudicing any inquiry?

It's appalling. And I would not put a cover up past them if it transpires it is anything to do with decisions linking back to Republican congressmen's self interest

user22446688 · 30/01/2025 17:34

God, these hearings. These nominees manage the feat of meeting at the exact junction of moron and traitor. They're the definition of DEI hiring.

Piggywaspushed · 30/01/2025 17:34

Or what happens when you don't DEI hire...

user22446688 · 30/01/2025 17:37

Piggywaspushed · 30/01/2025 17:34

When your 'I' is the morally and/or intellectually challenged

RafaistheKingofClay · 30/01/2025 17:38

Good grief just watching the press conference. What a mess.

The bit where he’s managed to stick to the script was delivered all the empathy of someone who’s pissed off this is taking them away from the golf course.

Could not bring myself to watch it but have made the mistake against my better judgment of having the hearings on in the background. I honestly can't believe Republican voters elect these buffoons time and again. And even the ones who aren't buffoons apparently feel like they have to cosplay one. Like John Kennedy from Louisiana, who went to UVA law school and Oxford and is worth tens of millions and feels it necessary to sound like a bumbling fool.

cakeorwine · 30/01/2025 18:10

I just can't believe Trump went down the DEI route.

I can.

However, it will interesting to see all Americans stopping flying until Donald Trump tells them it's safe again.

I wonder what the airlines are saying ?

By the sound of it the ATC was a blind dwarf with psychiatric problems. Or possibly a black person.

In all honestly I really would not like to be the person in ATC at the time of the accident. Trump mights as well have just come out and said we’re not having an investigation it was ATC to blame.

It sounds like the particular approach on that runway at night is not easy with other air traffic being around over the river and more visual look outs needed.

As I have said, this is (sadly) a perfect occasion for a money/mouth intersection.

All the people claiming to swallow this absolute crock can cancel or postpone their flights over US ATC territory.

Or they cannot, thus demonstrating (with the most precious thing they have - their money) that they don't really believe it.

I am sure there are folk in the US who would agree and get my drift.

I await mental contortions in the same league as "It's Biden's fault for not warning us that I voted Trump" ...

RafaistheKingofClay · 30/01/2025 18:30

Just out of interest Trump has fired a hell of a lot of people over the last week. How many in air safety and ATC. Because that’s a thing that actually could reasonably lead to an aviation accident.

You are possibly right about the approach to the airport. Aviation incidents tend to be a ‘holes in the cheese’ type of thing rather than one cause.

SerendipityJane · 30/01/2025 18:32

Aviation incidents tend to be a ‘holes in the cheese’ type of thing rather than one cause.

My takeaway from a few air crash programmes is that there is no such thing as an accident in that world. Just something that wasn't mitigated for. (Which could be said of anything ultimately).
