I'd just like to have a PM who was vaguely competent and got on with the job. And even if I don't like him and a lot of what he is doing, we do at last have a PM who sees doing the job to the best of his ability as his duty.
To be fair on May, I think she thought the same. She was stymied by a party riven by incompatible objectives (and dare I say, a "lack of a plan"
).
Not sure Cameron can now be described as statesmanlike. A statesman wouldn't have resigned at the first hurdle and would have stayed to follow through on the consequences of what he himself had put in play.
Blair - much as I hate him and his illegal war - was probably more "statesmanlike".
And yes, with hindsight, much as we made fun of him being the "grey man", Major was probably one of the best PMs we've had over the past few decades.
