I think the general public is gagging for statesmanship

Whilst that may be true, and while Starmer may not fit the bill, the problem is who does ?

The last PM we had who was even vaguely statesmenlike was Cameron. Who it turned out was a yellow (not blue) cunt who disappeared at the first hint of grapeshot.

Before that, maybe Major - quietly ?

The last big beast was Thatcher - much as I detest her.

And I find the search for heroes in politics rather depressing. It ignores the everyday heroes among us.

I agree with most of what you say. However I think it’s quite heroic to accept the post of PM no matter how rubbish the person turns out to be. I liked DC. How different life might have been been if he had resisted the calls for a referendum.

prettybird · 23/01/2025 09:46

I'd just like to have a PM who was vaguely competent and got on with the job. And even if I don't like him and a lot of what he is doing, we do at last have a PM who sees doing the job to the best of his ability as his duty.

To be fair on May, I think she thought the same. She was stymied by a party riven by incompatible objectives (and dare I say, a "lack of a plan" Wink).

Not sure Cameron can now be described as statesmanlike. A statesman wouldn't have resigned at the first hurdle and would have stayed to follow through on the consequences of what he himself had put in play.

Blair - much as I hate him and his illegal war - was probably more "statesmanlike".

And yes, with hindsight, much as we made fun of him being the "grey man", Major was probably one of the best PMs we've had over the past few decades.

I'm not a massive fan of counterfactuals. When you start digging, you find there is a tide behind events that could never be stopped.

The push for Brexit was never going to abate in the world in which we live in. And UK politics had been specifically weakened to allow it.

If Cameron had stood up to the "bastards" (as per John Major) they would have regrouped and tried again. Remember the press messaging that Farage was some sort of Messiah ? That was solely intended to scare moderate Tories into thinking they had to tack right and push for Brexit.

WW2 would have happened with or without Hitler. Maybe we would have fought Stalin instead.

1066 ? The Normans would have returned in 1067. And 1068 if needed. And we could never have repelled them.

There's a satisfying narrative to "great moments" but they rarely are.

Elodie09 · 23/01/2025 10:29

I think our PM is way more Statesmanlike than Johnson could ever hope to have been.
What a man he is to take all this on - and for all the right reasons !
It is not like the country could not see the damage the Cons. party had inflicted on us .
Nothing good to say about Cameron and Osborne (what is he doing at Davos?) because they were the architects of austerity.

No, it's on the A40 just by RAF Northolt in West London. Traffic reports on Capital Radio from "The Flying Eye" would often mention tailbacks into London "as far as the Polish War Memorial".

It's iconic and I grew up knowing why it was there.

There’s one in Staffordshire too.
Two actually. One at the National Memorial Arboretum, and the more specific Katyn Memorial on Cannock Chase.

cardibach · 23/01/2025 11:58

Rudakubana‘s sentencing has just started.

bombastix · 23/01/2025 12:08

A farce. He must be looking at 35 years plus even given his age.

I will be interested to hear the defence submissions

Rudakubana‘s sentencing has just started.

He’s causing all sorts of disruption. Those poor bloody families

WomenInConstruction · 23/01/2025 12:10

Why a farce? (Not being snarky, wondering what you mean)

Yes. The BbC live reporting sounds like it’s a terrible situation. Glad the judge is standing firm and not being manipulated.

He was taken to hospital this morning and assessed fit to be present. His efforts to delay the sentence are farcical.

That’s not quite the same thing as the sentencing being a farce which is how your post read.
I agree he’s trying to manipulate the situation though - and the judge isn’t having any of it.

bombastix · 23/01/2025 12:22

The additional farce is insisting he's present. There is no respectful way to do this, which the judge has recognized.

He's now getting a second opinion even though this will be the third medical assessed he's had.

I assume this is him all the time in terms of how he deals with anyone.

Efacsen · 23/01/2025 12:28

The judge has had him removed from the court for being disruptive - was only present for a few minutes

bombastix · 23/01/2025 12:30

This is the cost of insisting defendants are present. They turn it into a show for them.

Efacsen · 23/01/2025 12:32

Some of the details of the children’s injuries are distressing. The families have asked the press not to go into too much detail about what happened to the children.

Of course, rather than respecting that, certain quarters will make even more noise about cover ups than they already are.

BIWI · 23/01/2025 12:50

... and no doubt the MN ghouls will be baying for these details. And speculating about them if they don't get them. Sad

Elodie09 · 22/01/2025 19:03

How is she able to state things like that on national tv?
Unbelievable.

She's an unrepentant liar and out of her depth.
Her fan girls have gone rather quiet lately.
I'm glad I've found you - I'm finding so much of Mumsnet utterly dispiriting.
Little Tennyson letting me have a lie in yesterday.

This is a really balanced, supportive thread.
With the occasional disrupter.
There will aways be someone decent on this thread to hear you.

DuncinToffee · 23/01/2025 13:08

Some light hearted news

Kemi Badenoch tells her shadow cabinet she wishes Liz Truss would just be quiet for a bit.

Don't we all Grin

Hearing the nature of the injuries inflicted he may be given a term of 40 plus years. The sadism is off the scale.

His plea of guilty seems cynical. I hope the judge sees right through it and disclaims the discount it would usually give a defendant.

Ghouls is exactly the right word for them. I am not going near any threads about it today.

DuncinToffee · 23/01/2025 13:41

Liam Thorp (liverpool echo) posted this just now

The details coming out in court today are incredibly distressing and utterly heartbreaking. We have chosen to leave some of those details out at the request of the families. It is hard to comprehend what they are going through.

Those poor parents, my heart breaks for them can’t even imagine what they must be going through
Ghouls very apt description.
