Dislike my DC's name. I can't change it, can I?

No, I know I can't!

I got use to it (I didn't want her with that name but gave in when she was born under dangerous circumstances and said she can have any name as long as she's okay)

But now a singer I don't really like the look of has become popular and they're a Lola too Envy

So now my mind thinks of her.

Anyone else been through it and just forgotten about it all after a while? DD is 2.

Other daughter is Maria (who's 10) and I've always loved her name

Ooo I have to disagree with that! Her look really annoys me, I do like a more conservative look.

These are all things I wouldn't say to anyone out loud.

But her song is now on my playlist because I didn't want to like it but do actually!

She seems quite distinct to me. The lyrics are great, very relatable and easy, and the tune is good

Not sure what she was thinking with that awful hair and clothing. Goodness me.

Are you going to change her name every time there is someone who has a similar name you do not like the look of ?

Lola is a lovely name.
I would leave it. The singer might be working as a Zoo Keeper by the time Lola is driving a car.

Does Lola have a middle name?
She always has the choice of being known by that later in life..

Of course they know of it, it's always on stage and TV at Christmas.

My friend Alice had a problem with people yelling "who the f is Alice" at her at school, even though it's a far more obscure reference and wasn't a song of our generation.

I’ve never encountered either of these issues, and I’m in my mid thirties. Maria and Alice are pretty timeless names.

Plenty of Lola's around. I love it.

OP, how old are you? She’s 24, of Jamaican and Chinese descent, she’s struggled with her mental health and physical health, she experiments with her look (what twenty-something doesn’t?) and she’s making a real name and success of herself. What’s wrong with that?

I don’t think anyone would ever associate her with your child’s name. They are more likely to think of the transsexual from the Kinks song.

Seriously - in 2 years time, no one will know who the singer Lola (Young?) is or was. There are so many singers, bands and musicians now. I follow a huge range of music and I've never heard of her. I watched one of her YT videos and, speaking as a songwriter and singer myself - I thought it was actually OK but I don't think she's going to be around for all her talents - talent is so disposable these days and there is so much of it around. Lola's a cool name - trips of the tongue so easily - Lo La - Lovely Lass Lola - I'd make peace with it and find something else more important to worry about. My DD was seriously ill for several years - other sh!t in life quickly puts things like this into perspective doesn't it? If she's healthy, happy, loved and thriving - count your blessings is my view FWIW.

@LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway Chubby Brown may well have sung it too, but I only remember Kermit's rendition. I just watched it on you tube and a tattooed miss Piggy gyrating gracefully is a sight to behold 😆😆

😂 Wish I had seen that! 😆

This is a very odd and extreme reaction to a fairly normal, reasonably attractive young woman, who is just expressing herself through her clothing and fashion.

Are there deeper reasons why you are so vitriolic about Lola Young? Your dislike of her seems disproportionate. Not like she's a convicted killer or something!

Birdbox181 · 18/01/2025 12:05

I went through this with DS. I just fixated on his name, I couldn't think why on earth we chose it, I convinced myself he'd be bullied for it, it went round and round in my head for months.

I blame my hormones (although he was 3 at the time!)

He's 15 now and I love his name again. He's never been bullied and he likes it too.

I should add, it's a perfectly normal name, nothing weird or different.

Lola is a lovely name, you're over thinking it. Push it to the back of your mind and enjoy your DD.

NewLamp · 18/01/2025 12:11

It's not a name I particularly like. If you want a compromise you could give her a longer name that Lola can be a nickname for

I wondered if race might be a factor.

Seriously!? People are allowed to think that a mullet and heavy make-up is not their preferred look. What would make you think it's a race issue? OP has said nothing to suggest that.

Not your preferred look is one thing. Hating it so much you want to change your kids name..... something else entirely.

BlueFlagPinkFlag · 19/01/2025 10:20

There was a girl at my school who I never liked as she was a bit odd and a bit gross….my daughter has her name (occurred to me after she was born and named 😂), it’s a beautiful name. As it happens my DD is also a bit gross haha.
