Dislike my DC's name. I can't change it, can I?

No, I know I can't!

I got use to it (I didn't want her with that name but gave in when she was born under dangerous circumstances and said she can have any name as long as she's okay)

But now a singer I don't really like the look of has become popular and they're a Lola too Envy

So now my mind thinks of her.

Anyone else been through it and just forgotten about it all after a while? DD is 2.

Other daughter is Maria (who's 10) and I've always loved her name

Just googled LY and she looks very young and inoffensive. Op is doing a good job of promoting an unknown singer

Ariela · 18/01/2025 10:56

I know a Lola who is always called Lo. People often assume Lois rather than Lola, or mis-hear as Jo (those born in the 70s) but Lo actually suits her.

diddl · 18/01/2025 10:56

Does she have a middle name? Or a version of a surname or even initials that can be made into a "known-as" name/nickname?

She might love her name & want to be called Lola!

Meh. I'd change it to Laura. It doesn't really matter if she doesn't answer to it, as you say.

I am assuming you are talking about Lola Young?

What's wrong with her? Confused

As I said, this can happen at any time with any name. It can end up being associated with something or someone you don't like.

Yeah this. ^ Funny that isn't it? Wink Disliking someone for no valid reason. It is coming across as trying to promote the singer now you come to mention it!

I am from Andalusia region and I've never known a Lola, just a Dolores who sometimes went as Dolly!

My family is also Spanish - know lots of Lolas and Lolis of all ages.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 18/01/2025 11:07

You could probably change it to something like Lila or Layla, I have an acquaintance who adopted a four-year-old child from overseas and didn’t like the child’s name so changed it to an English name with a similar sound. The child quickly took to the new name, although obviously in that situation friends and family weren’t used to using the original name. I would think the harder aspect of changing a two-year-olds name would be getting all of the friends and family who know her by Lola on board.

I’d also add don’t change her name just because you don’t like a celebrity with the name. You could change it to Layla and then next week there could be a new singer or actress with that name who you dislike!

Kidsroomquestion · 18/01/2025 11:10

Love the name Lola. Reminds me of the book Lola Rose by Jacqueline Wilson that I adored growing up!

NewFriendlyLadybird · 18/01/2025 11:11

Lola’s a lovely name. I walkways thing of Charlie and Lola. That will last longer than a random singer. It will still suit her as she frowns up as it is her name.

Plastictrees · 18/01/2025 11:12

Maria and Lola have a very different vibe to me, but that isn’t a bad thing. You say she suits her name which is the main thing, I’d focus less on the celebrity as any name could suddenly become popular so I don’t think it makes sense to change her name due to that. I wonder why this is an issue for you 2 years on.

StormingNorman · 18/01/2025 11:12

Lola is a cute name but I understand about it not sounding professional.

You could change her name to something which allows Lola as a nickname.

Luisa
Lucia
Caroline/Carolina

You seem a bit snobby about Lola Young , would it help you to know she is Julia Donaldsons niece..

There’s someone else called Lola Young who is a Baroness and academic, born in 1951. She came up first when I googled the name!

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 18/01/2025 11:16

It reminds me of the Copacabana song by Barry Manilow truth be told!

🎵 Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl! 🎵👯

First thing that springs to mind (for me.)

chilliconcarneplease · 18/01/2025 09:03

Thank you. She doesn't actually answer to it yet (has a diagnosis of autism that she got 5 months ago, not long after her second birthday)

She does suit it, to be fair. I can't really see her with another name

Don’t change it. You may not think she recognises it but Autism can cause her not to respond and she may have learned that the name belongs to her. If you start calling her by a different name she won’t understand and you will confuse her.

Beautiful, isn't it? It was between that and Lydia with DD1. I also liked Vivienne but didn't like how there were too many spelling options

Lydia and Vivienne are lovely, Maria is too Sound of Music for me. People would be singing it in her face. Lola is better than Maria imo. Maria sounds dated rather than popularly old-fashioned, and Lola is more modern.

Growlybear83 · 18/01/2025 11:18

When I see the name Lydia all I can think of is Kermit the frog singing Lydia the tattooed lady 😆

Plastictrees · 18/01/2025 11:19

@heyhopotato They really wouldn’t, that’s such a generational reference. Young people won’t have even heard of it. Maria is a beautiful, classic name.

Aaaah, nepotism! You think someone has made it through sheer hard work and talent, and then it emerges they have a famous relative. Bit like Sabrina Carpenter! Yeah, maybe they are good/talented in their own right, but being related to someone famous certainly gives people a back door into the industry!

That is so true! I have just searched and listened to her song. Like it, going to download now.

Growlybear83 · 18/01/2025 11:23

@LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway Chubby Brown may well have sung it too, but I only remember Kermit's rendition. I just watched it on you tube and a tattooed miss Piggy gyrating gracefully is a sight to behold 😆😆

Of course they know of it, it's always on stage and TV at Christmas.

My friend Alice had a problem with people yelling "who the f is Alice" at her at school, even though it's a far more obscure reference and wasn't a song of our generation.

MarshmallowPink · 18/01/2025 11:23

You could start calling her Lo as a nick name and if that sticks it'd be easier to change her name to eg Lois or something as nickname is the same

Ps thanks for not drip feeding!
