Dislike my DC's name. I can't change it, can I?

chilliconcarneplease · 18/01/2025 08:54

No, I know I can't!

I got use to it (I didn't want her with that name but gave in when she was born under dangerous circumstances and said she can have any name as long as she's okay)

But now a singer I don't really like the look of has become popular and they're a Lola too Envy

So now my mind thinks of her.

Anyone else been through it and just forgotten about it all after a while? DD is 2.

Other daughter is Maria (who's 10) and I've always loved her name

definitely don’t change it because of a singer.

You could change it to Amelia then a week later a singer called Amelia comes along that you don’t like.

LostittoBostik · 18/01/2025 09:39

Lola is a lovely name and not unusual enough to be closely associated with any particular celebrity (even the Kinks song)

Onceuponatimethen · 18/01/2025 09:39

Lola is a lovely name and I know some in the City, so it definitely can be professional and grown up nowadays.

"Don't like the look of" wtf??

Is this the Lola who sings Messy? It's an incredible song.

Oh I love that song ... didn't know it was by someone called Lola

ChubbyBubbyBoo · 18/01/2025 09:40

Lola is a nice name and reminds me of Charlie and Lola. I don’t know a singer named Lola.

Never heard of Lola and Messy song until now. I’ve just listened to it and it’s actually quite good.

Starsandall · 18/01/2025 09:46

I like it but that’s not the point! Has she got a middle name you could use? Is it more about the association with an ex that chose it? If so maybe work on that instead of changing her name.

Nchanged89 · 18/01/2025 09:49

Why don't you like the look of the singer Lola?

ThatRareUmberJoker · 18/01/2025 09:53

Lola is a nice name but to answer your question you can change her name.

To change a child's first name in the UK, you can apply for an enrolled deed poll. You can apply online or by post.
What you need
Parental consent
Everyone with parental responsibility for the child must agree to the name change. If you can't get the other parent's consent, you'll need to explain why in the application.
Forms
You'll need to download and complete the forms for changing a child's name, including the notification form for The Gazette.
Affidavit of best interest
You'll need to include an affidavit to show that changing the child's name is in their best interests.
Witness
The application must be signed by two witnesses.
What you pay
The application fee is £50.32.
If you need a court order, it will cost £215.
What happens next
The application will be referred to a senior judge for permission to enroll.
The name change will be processed, which can take three to eight weeks.
Where to find more information
You can find more information on GOV.UK.
You can also find example letters of consent on the UK Deed Poll Service website.

I like the kinks song Lola, havent heard of this song .However we are all associated with names of something! My mum was very cross because she was asked if she had named me after President Kennedys daughter!Shes 3 years older than me.Mum said I was named after my dads cousin. I think its a pretty name

Clanson · 18/01/2025 09:56

Your daughter will be still be the "primary" Lola to everyone around her, by a huge margin. A random singer doesn't trump your own daughter. Mine was nearly Elsa a few years before Frozen and while it wouldn't have been ideal, changing her name would have been a huge overreaction to the completely normal event of someone else having her name.

I think you need to talk this through with someone and choose to move on from this negative association. It's a pretty name, given with love. Just go with it,; and maybe develop your own private nickname to use between yourselves.

ThatRareUmberJoker · 18/01/2025 09:56

To change a child's name in Spain, both parents must sign an application at the Spain Consulate where the child is resident. This is required if the child is under 18 years old.
Consider the following
Informal name changes
You can call your child a new name without official paperwork, but it's best to get the other parent's agreement.
Common usage
You can ask family and friends to call your child by a nickname, which can save you the expense of a legal name change.
Legal documents
If you change your child's name, their legal documents like their birth certificate, school records, and Social Security card will remain in their original name.
Schools and other organizations
Schools and other organizations may not use the new name unless it's been formally changed.

I like the name Lola, never heard of the singer either. Is it likely she will still be famous in 5 / 10 years? I wouldn’t have thought so.

Just call her Lo or Lolo as a nickname.

mangoes1 · 18/01/2025 10:00

There's nothing wrong with Lola, I prefer Layla but that's just a preference. If you are going to do it do it now. I am desperate to change the name of one of my DC. But he's 30yo so I don't think my opinion counts anymore😂

SemperIdem · 18/01/2025 10:01

The singer Lola is pretty new to the music scene and much like a multitude of other singers around that age. She’s not distinct enough to stand out from them now, never mind long term. I wouldn’t worry about it, honestly!

When I think of Lola, I think about the song by The Kinks.

I think Barry Manilow

Layla will forever be associated with Eric Clapton, who is an arse.

I’m very fond of the name Lola.

AmIwrong1234 · 18/01/2025 10:08

I wouldn’t change her name at her age. Find a nickname for her you love and use that. Can see why it’s difficult for you though!

Growlybear83 · 18/01/2025 10:11

I quite like the name Lola but I do immediately think of the Kinks song and in particular the line 'I asked her her name and in a dark brown voice she said Lola' 😆

rainbowstardrops · 18/01/2025 10:12

I've never heard of a singer called Lola but I'm old enough to know the Barry Manilow song!
I've also worked with children for over 30 years and have only ever come across one Lola. Nice girl!
I don't think you should change her name now but no reason why you can't give her a nickname.

PlaneNoiz · 18/01/2025 10:12

I’m in my early 30s and no idea who Lola Young is.

Hipalong · 18/01/2025 10:13

Viviennemary · 18/01/2025 09:01

I think you could change it at the age of 2 if it bothers you that much.

No

Ooo I have to disagree with that! Her look really annoys me, I do like a more conservative look.

These are all things I wouldn't say to anyone out loud.

But her song is now on my playlist because I didn't want to like it but do actually!

She seems quite distinct to me. The lyrics are great, very relatable and easy, and the tune is good

Not sure what she was thinking with that awful hair and clothing. Goodness me.

Lola is a gorgeous name.

Be careful assuming that you can easily change it because she’s autistic and doesn’t respond to her name! Hmm

Lol, I have 10 years of skin in the game when it comes to profound Autism. It was just a response to a poster saying she hears it and would respond to it
