Dislike my DC's name. I can't change it, can I?

No, I know I can't!

I got use to it (I didn't want her with that name but gave in when she was born under dangerous circumstances and said she can have any name as long as she's okay)

But now a singer I don't really like the look of has become popular and they're a Lola too Envy

So now my mind thinks of her.

Anyone else been through it and just forgotten about it all after a while? DD is 2.

Other daughter is Maria (who's 10) and I've always loved her name

You’ve obviously never heard of The Kinks song Lola, if you had, not in a million years would you have called your daughter Lola.

ERthree · 18/01/2025 10:20

Don't be ridiculous.

FutureFry · 18/01/2025 10:22

You revealed the name in the first post. So refreshing!!

FWIW, Lola is a really pretty, feminine, happy name in my eyes. It was on my names list.

I love that it's quite international but with the obvious Spanish twist.

I think Barry Manilow

You’re thinking of Copacabana.

I have. Can't say it bothers me Grin she very obviously doesn't look like a man dressed as a woman!

And I actually the the Barry M song... so does DD! She dances to it (well, spins, but it makes her happy)

Do you have a name in mind that you would like to change it to?

For the record, I really like Lola. Perhaps you could change it to something that sounds similar so it’s not such a big change for her such as Viola (similar vein as Vivienne).

ShodAndShadySenators · 18/01/2025 10:37

Lola is a lovely name, and as a PP has pointed out, has the benefit of being phonetic and easy to spell and say.

My DS didn't respond to his name for a long time either, but he's old enough now to say he likes it and no mum, he wouldn't want to be called Xavier instead. (Pooey.) The pop singer will probably not set the world on fire and you will forget about her, your Lola will just go on being your Lola.

The main thing is, you say it suits her. That's fab.

GoneForFood · 18/01/2025 10:37

I know what you mean about the singer - she looks like she needs a good scrub in the bath.

Lola is a fab name though and if your daughter suits it then keep it. The Lola I know went by Lollie as a child.

GodDamnVampire · 18/01/2025 10:38

I think Lola is a lovely name and the singer is talented, a great song writer and fantastic vocals.
Someone to look up to I'd say.
Love 'Messy' , but Lola Young also sang the slowed down arrangement of 'Together in Electric Dreams' for the 2021 JL Christmas ad (the aliens one!)

Please reconsider keeping her name, she's your gorgeous little 2 yr old Lola!

diddl · 18/01/2025 10:38

I love Lola!

By comparison I think Maria is dull & old fashioned!

Travelodge · 18/01/2025 10:39

You could add another name, e.g. Lola-Jane.

She was Lolo rather than Lola.

Which I understand was a bit of a joke as lolo is French slang for boobs.

InkHeart2024 · 18/01/2025 10:43

I have to say that Maria is a much better name than Lola and I can see why you might regret it but it's done now and you can't change it. You can give her a nickname though? What about Lulu, Lou?

Google it! She used to appear on a Channel 4 show presented by some guy called Anton and Jean Paul Gaultier

Andoutcomethewolves · 18/01/2025 10:45

If it's any consolation OP about two weeks after I was born a singer came out with a VERY big hit that dominated the charts for weeks, she shared both her (very distinctive/unusual) first and last names with baby me. My parents hated the song and hated people asking if I was named after the singer. But I suited my name so they got over it.

It affected me not one bit. As a young adult I would occasionally get older people saying ohhh like the singer of [x]? Or singing the chorus of her main hit at me. Meh. I don't think I've had that now since I was maybe 25 and tbh I didn't care when I did.

I'd never heard of this Lola Young until I looked her up just now and I doubt she's going to be massively memorable/successful. Just try to focus on 'your' Lola - it's her name and you say it suits her so ignore any other influences. For what it's worth, I think it's a lovely name and not childish or unprofessional at all.

Ah sorry, my mistake! I always thought it was Lola 😁

Why? It's one song, which not everyone will know. There have been plenty of other Lolas. I've taught quite a few. 2 in my current school. It's a lovely name, and I don't think it's at all 'unprofessional', OP. I've never known anyone make a negative comment about it. And yes, I know the song well.

mangoes1 · 18/01/2025 10:47

I'm sorry I had no idea Eric Clapton was an arse, I still think Layla/Leila is a prettier name but I have no idea what Eric Clapton has done. Stick to your guns OP if you want to call you daughter Lola then go right ahead and do it.Good luck with the exciting journey ahead. Maria is perfection so well done there, Try not to watch "the Sound of music toooo often though" 😁

AmateurNoun · 18/01/2025 10:47

I think it would be worse if Lola Young was just Lola. I wouldn't have wanted to name my child Rihanna or Adele just before those pop stars became famous.

It's possible that Lola Young will fade to obscurity or she might stick around for a while, but I don't think she's all that people will think of when they hear the name in any event.

TwirlyPineapple · 18/01/2025 10:50

I don't think you can change her name at 2. I'm not a huge fan of Lola but it's a perfectly fine name that your daughter will be OK with.

I find it strange that you haven't grown to like it though. I've always named my pets names I considered ridiculous or pretentious and ended up with them growing on me to the point I'd consider them for a child. I'm surprised Lola hasn't grown on you as you've bonded with Lola herself. It sounds like possibly the difficult birth is inextricably linked to the name, maybe therapy could help with that.

DragonFly98 · 18/01/2025 10:52

You seem a bit snobby about Lola Young , would it help you to know she is Julia Donaldsons niece..

Userjal · 18/01/2025 10:53

If you don’t like the name you don’t like the name, but please don’t let the singer be your decider. I have the same name as a very famous singer, I would say it’s not particularly common either, and after a few years of oh like the singer, I don’t get it anymore at all. Lola will be main Lola in your life just as I am the main one of my name to all that know me

YogaLite · 18/01/2025 10:55

Does she have a middle name? Or a version of a surname or even initials that can be made into a "known-as" name/nickname?

I use my second name b/c I hate my first name, always have. Not keen on Lola myself, sounds a bit childish but hey, Andy Murray's daughter is called Lola I think.

I would call her Lou or Lulu like a previous poster suggested, or Loli/e
