It is just a case of adding oats, milk and chia seeds and sticking in fridge?

Are there nice recipes? Talk to me

I have frozen berries and flaked almonds in mine, plus Greek yoghurt. And flaxseed . It all goes in the night before. I did get used to having it without honey, though obviously it’s nicer with!

You eat it cold. The yoghurt “cooks” the oats and they soften up.

I love porridge but don’t have the time to cook it in the morning. I can just pull the tub of overnight oats out the fridge. OO are my workday breakfast.

Edited

Oh, I always thought it was warmed up the next day! Cold wouldn't work for me, I'd need to warm it, and not sure how much time this would save rather than just having regular porridge. If anybody does warm it in the morning, what is the texture like, and does this save you time as opposed to making porridge?

Try Lidl yoghurt the dark blue one £1.65 it tastes so yummy and creamy

I can’t do it. I don’t like yoghurt much anyway but won’t chewy oats it was even worse. Prefer porridge.

I think chia seeds are good for texture and filling you up. They are also full of fibre but make sure you drink water through the day.

Overnight oats aren't for everyone but I really enjoy them. I actually find them more satisfying than a bowl of porridge. My sister hates the texture of them.

Some people have been doing overnight Weetabix but haven't tried that yet :)

My son hates the texture of them too. He was on an international flight recently and they served overnight oats for breakfast! He wasn’t impressed. I wish I had been able to try it though. It would be interesting to see how an airline catering company does it!

I have oats, apple juice & yoghurt every morning - I love it

Sparxdislike · 17/01/2025 22:29

@R053 I'm curious about that as well :)

They are meant to be really good for you. Time will tell. I'm on week 2 of having overnight oats for breakfast. I don't prepare several days in advance like some people. Just one at a time :)

I have to have a warm breakfast, so you could warm your overnight oats up in the microwave. Personally I batch cook slow cooked porridge and warm it up each morning. Pinhead oatmeal with full fat milk.

I was only thinking about doing this the other day as I'm shite in the morning and going to be starting work earlier soon.

If I did a batch on Sunday would it keep for the week? Could I freeze it?

OwlsDance · 17/01/2025 23:05

Overnight oats with water is just wrong.

I do mine with Milk, and then add Yogurt and Blueberries or whatever other fruit or berries I have in the morning. I'll sometimes pop it into microwave for a minute, as I'm not a fan of fridge cold food.

I think it's texture that some people love or hate, I prefer overnight oats over porridge.

Actually really looking forward to breakfast now 😋

Bjorkdidit · 18/01/2025 07:31

I'm another one who wants to like this, but just can't, cold porridge, just no.

Plus the 'ooh, it keeps me full for hours' is another big fat lie, even when I've added protein powder, peanut butter and full fat Greek yogurt to the fancy steel cut oats and berries it just doesn't work for me and I'm absolutely starving an hour later.

This thread feels like I'm being gaslighted by the oats lobbyists.

@Bjorkdidit 😂 I just really enjoy them tbh. Everyone is different aren't they? I really dislike fish but other people absolutely love it. Each to their own?

CaraCameleon · 18/01/2025 07:57

I use organic Jordans oats which I’ve found to be the best. I add chia seeds, cocoa nibs, cinnamon, frozen fruit. Sometimes sultanas or chopped banana but banana should be added just before eating. Toasted almonds added just before eating, or walnuts are also good, or organic blueberries. Then Greek yoghurt in the morning . You can use oat milk, almond milk or ordinary milk with it. Just try out different combinations . Grated apple is gorgeous .

BigDahliaFan · 18/01/2025 08:03

Like @soupfiend i batchcook pinhead oatmeal and warm up a bit each day. Unfortunately can only get the oatmeal on Amazon where I live.

or I just make porridge in the morning, 3 minutes In microwave with normal oats. Add yoghurt seeds and frozen fruit.

Lobstercrisps · 18/01/2025 08:06

Surprised at so few people weighing the ingredients.
I use 40g oats, 10g flax, 100ml skimmed milk, 100g of Greek yoghurt or kefir. Mix and leave overnight. I prefer mine out of the fridge as it's too cold to eat otherwise.

I then add any stewed fruit or blueberries and banana and peanut butter, or Banana and dessicated coconut.

Delicious!

Oh yes youre right about the hunger. I can eat my oats at 10 and then racing for lunch at 12. But even eggs etc doesn't keep me from hunger pangs!

I’ve been meaning to try this recipe for coffee overnight oats www.saveur.com/recipes/leftover-coffee-overnight-oats-recipe/

Has anyone had the Gail’s overnight oats with date and tahini? That was lovely and I’m trying to figure out how to recreate it at home, as my previous attempts at overnight oats have been a bit gloopy.

CaptainMyCaptain · 18/01/2025 08:19

I always put fruit in mine, usually frozen berries but sometimes tinned mandarins or slightly cooked apple, then a few dried cranberries or raisins. Moisten the oats with milk then add yoghurt and sprinkle with chia seeds. I find the kefir drinks are good instead of yoghurt and add to the moistness of the oats without making them sloppy. I have this every day.

@MadamePeriwinkle yes, they can last up to a week depending on the ingredients. Some people do 3 or 4 at a time though.

Overnight oats keeps me full longer than porridge or toast. I don't fancy eggs first thing. I usually last until lunch time but if not I snack on nuts.

Perhaps the people who are hungry an hour later aren't putting enough oats in.

broccolienthusiast · 18/01/2025 08:37

100g of dry oats, water, protein powder, frozen berries and then some nut butter on top. Keeps me full😎

deeahgwitch · 18/01/2025 09:12

I do oats, apple juice and frozen cherries, raspberries, blackberries and strawberries.
Sits on the countertop and defrosts overnight.

I also do oats, Greek yogurt and add blueberries.

Both yummy and so much nicer than the breakfast I am doing at the moment- Oatzempic - oats and water whizzed with the juice of half a lime and a sprinkling of cinnamon and drunk. But it is filling.
