Overnight oats...

It is just a case of adding oats, milk and chia seeds and sticking in fridge?

Are there nice recipes? Talk to me

Each to their own. I tried it and it was like glue. OK I probably got the proportions of the add ons wrong, but it's not for me.

Much prefer hot/warm porridge TBH and it only takes 3.5 mins in the micro made on water, add vanilla extract, pinch of cinnamon and protein powder + milled chia and flaxseed. Am I virtuous or what? 😊

Daisymay2 · 17/01/2025 20:40

I use linseed, sultanas, sunflower hearts and pumpkin seeds and mix them and add milk and leave overnight and leave in the fridge. In the morning add either raspberries, blackcurrant or red currants which I defrosted overnight and some Greek yogurt. For some reason I don’t like it if I defrost the fruit in the overnight oats.

KIlliePieMyOhMy · 17/01/2025 20:41

Make some porridge.

I do oats, nuts & seeds (chia, sunflower, linseed) with mixed fruit, Greek yogurt & a spoonful of kefir, then in the morning add a sliced banana & sprinkle with cinnamon.

I love the look of some of those recipes though.

How can anyone describe plain oats and water as lovely.

Overnight oats can be nice, with the right things added but plain with water, no thanks.

Yeh even my baby turns her nose up at plain oats.

I have to have a warm breakfast, so you could warm your overnight oats up in the microwave. Personally I batch cook slow cooked porridge and warm it up each morning. Pinhead oatmeal with full fat milk.

Why didn't I think of this. I like the texture of porridge but find overnight oats cold and slimey.

Cantbebotheredwithausername · 17/01/2025 20:54

You can add some yoghurt, too, if you like, but it's optional.

I prefer to add something sweet - vanilla sugar, honey or maple syrup. And I always eat it with fruit topping. Pieces of cut up apple will do. Blueberries or blackberries are even better. If I'm feeling fancy, I'll make my own compote of fruits and berries.

If you want to up your protein and don't like the taste of yoghurt, you can also add whey protein. It can also be sweetened with artificial sweeteners for a lower calorie content. I did that for a while - I've lost faith in the idea of using artificial sweeteners now, though.

Make up a muesli mix - oats, oat bran, dried fruit of your choice, nuts and seeds.

Then 1/2 mug oats, 1/2 mug milk, 1/4 mug natural yoghurt and stir well. In a kilner jar in the fridge.

bradypuss · 17/01/2025 21:01

I use oats... Any fruit..yogurt and secret ingredient some diluting vimto squash.
I hate milk !

Nicecatneighbour · 17/01/2025 21:06

Oats, chopped apple, raisins, apple juice, Greek yoghurt, drizzle of honey. Oh, bit of cinnamon. Eat with a sliced banana.

BashfulClam · 17/01/2025 20:24

I hated it. Wanted to like it but chewy oats with a sour yoghurt flavour wasn’t for me.

Try Lidl yoghurt the dark blue one £1.65 it tastes so yummy and creamy

MidnightMusing5 · 17/01/2025 21:17

Mixed berries rasp, black, blue frozen mix from Costco. Add Lidl Greek style yoghurt (the full fat one) oats, can add a bit of honey if you want , sprinkle of cinnamon , nut and seeds of choice .yum yum yum. It’s like a dessert

R053 · 17/01/2025 21:21

I used to have porridge faithfully every morning but now I am an enthusiastic convert to overnight oats to the point that I wake up and think “oh yippee, time for my oats and coffee!” Mind you, it’s summer where I live so having something cold is refreshing.

I have Greek yoghurt, low fat milk, chia seeds, vanilla extract, maple syrup, flaked almonds and chopped banana in mine. It keeps me full for a while.

HelloCanYouHearMe · 17/01/2025 21:22

Oats, greek yoghurt, 1/2 teaspoon of cocoa and some orange segments

NotMilanese · 17/01/2025 21:24

In a smallish jar, I add:
3 tbsp oats
2 tbsp chia seeds
2 tbsp raisins (maybe more)
1 tbsp cocoa powder (unsweetened)
1 tsp maple syrup
Soy milk to cover and maybe 1/2 cm over
Stir and place in refrigerator. In the morning it's soaked up all the milk, and I usually add whatever milk I've heated but not added to my coffee if you see what I mean, and stir it some more. Very thick, sludgy and chocolatey, with the occasional pop from chia seeds. I like it.

itsstillmehere · 17/01/2025 21:25

Add some grated apple.

Oats
Milk
Honey Greek yogurt
Chia seeds
Frozen raspberries
Frozen mango
Macadamia nuts

dancinfeet · 17/01/2025 21:31

I tried to like them but the cold gloopy texture is just a no from me.

Weenurse · 17/01/2025 21:32

1/4 cup oats
1 tablespoon each chia, coconut, psyllium and dried cranberries.
1 teaspoon vanilla and 1 of cinnamon.
1/4 cup greek yogurt and 1/3 cup almond milk.
Into fridge overnight
I add sliced banana in the morning

StormingNorman · 17/01/2025 21:34

Oats, Greek or natural yoghurt, a little bit of water to loosen and cinnamon to season.

Then I top it with a homemade apple compote, either alone or with frozen qraspberries.

Leave it all in the fridge overnight.

Bearbookagainandagain · 17/01/2025 21:34

I hate it with just milk, I need yogurt to give it some texture.

I really like "bircher muesli" type with grated apple, yogurt, milk, oats, chia and dried fruits (I like apricots but you can anything).

Otherwise I make an easy one in the summer with vanilla yogurt, oats and fresh raspberries.

mum2jakie · 17/01/2025 21:36

I've never tried chia seeds. What do they actually taste like?

Pytilla · 17/01/2025 21:40

Where am I going wrong with my overnight oats? - I generally do oats, plain yogurt, bit of milk and a little honey, but it keeps fermenting and going gross? It's in the fridge overnight. How can I avoid this happening?

bakewellbride · 17/01/2025 21:40

@mum2jakie they don't really taste like anything tbh, but they do add a distinctive texture (which you may not like!) and are very healthy. Keep you full for ages too.
