Your 'old lady' habits/tastes ;)

Do you like footspa? Have a crush on Alan Titchmarsh?

I'm 47 and I like to get Kriss Kross puzzle books when I go on holiday, I think their main market is the over 70s. I also like Fenjal bubble bath which I'm sure is rather an old lady thing.

Old ladies also welcome to add their old lady habits too! 😁

@TaylorGuitar I'm with you on the proper G&T - it's got to be Gordon's. All these new ones just aren't proper gin.

Nope. Hendricks now.

Years ago I was a barmaid in a WMC and became the familiar face for the 'old time dancing' shift in the ballroom. I slowly became accepted (hard taskmasters, they were) and learned everyone's drinks. There were specific requests for extra maraschino cherries on the end-of-the-night heady tipples, they would have lager or beer, sometimes martini and lemonade, until near closing when they'd move on to drambuie or cointreau. I wasn't supposed to give them extra cherries but of course, I did. I've loved a maraschino cherry ever since. Don't really drink much now and the sugar from the cherries hurts my beleaguered kidneys, which is a different type of old (they're old before their time, my kidneys). I'm 40. I also have a mending pile but it's never finished. I'm repairing my son's blanket at the moment, darned a jumper last week. I take the blanket all over with me in the car so I can do a bit wherever I am.

I am nearly 78 and don't feel like an old lady even though I suppose I am.

I like walking my big dog on the common
reading
current events
gardening and feeding the birds
meeting friends for coffee
and most important - laughing

Oh, someone a bit older than me, I thought I was the oldest person on MN!

You had me at Fenjal!

Fenjal and Badedas- love ‘em both and good ol’ Pears soap.
4711 cologne! My dad wore it. His sister wore it. My grandmother wore it. I wear it. I use the bar soap too. Love it! It’s the poor man’s Acqua di Parma (which I also wear) but it’s even nicer. It’s classy, classic, affordable, wonderful smelling.
Electric blankets and electric mattress warmers! I’m under mine now.
Ecco shoes (better for me than Skechers, which actually are heaven by the way).
History Hit podcast
The Rest is History podcast
Cooking/Chef podcasts (anything with Claudia Roden- there aren’t many but she’s a gem to listen to)
Gardening
Cat everything!
Astronomy/star gazing
Almanacs

I have 4711 cool stick, I love it!
I like Ponds cold cream, indoor gloves, cake at the garden centre. Always a teacup and saucer. Love a tea cosy. 🫖
I am fond of Penhaligons too.

Softdressesandblouses · 18/01/2025 06:14

I have a comprehensive collection of tweed skirts, mostly by Viyella and Aquascutum, and some more modern iterations by Betty Barclay, dubarry’s and Whistles. They are old friends and I love them.

Westfacing · 18/01/2025 06:54

At 70 I'm the real deal but all I will admit to is Skechers for walking in the park, otherwise I wear Adidas Sambas.

I've recently binged-watched Shetland right from the first series - expect lusting after DI Perez is old lady!

scalt · 18/01/2025 07:23

Classical music: I was brought up on it as a child, the cassettes that went with the Ladybird books had snippets of well-known pieces of music between the scenes, that was my introduction to them. A birthday treat (which I loved) was being taken to a classical concert, aimed at children.

I listen to Classic FM in the car, but certain things about it drive me mad: the earnest-voiced adverts (I always turn the sound down for them), the distinctive jingle which means "here come the adverts", when the news contains tearful interviews (it's worse than Radio 4 for this), and that it can be over-repetitive. I once heard the overture to the Marriage of Figaro three times in a week.

Auburngal · 18/01/2025 08:27

My love of classical music started with Tom and Jerry. A few of their cartoons had them in. https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x8p4my8

Does anyone here own up to knitting decorated tops on Post Boxes? Not me Guv!

No but I live in the next village to where they are from and the postbox in my village has a Christmas one on still

mollymile · 18/01/2025 08:41

Music is important to me, especially now I am going deaf. I subscribe to YouTube, and listen on Bluetooth headphones. Recently re discovered Gilbert & Sullivan. Singing along with the popular songs. Earworm now!! "Never mind the Whys and Wherefore"

Vinculum · 18/01/2025 08:50

Also a legit old lady at 65. However, I’ve always (since my 20s at least) had a passionate attachment to cardigans - albeit very fussy about the right sort that aren’t in fact old-lady-ish - as well as been a knitter and sewer. I also bake cakes
and scones. And garden. And DH and I are members of the National Trust and do hard cryptic crosswords together, preferably snuggled up in bed in the mornings with our tea and coffee. Bliss.

SapphireSeptember · 18/01/2025 08:52

Shopping in Bon Marche. 😁 I have a big tummy left over from having a baby and they have some dresses that are so comfy and tummy skimming! I bought quite a lot of stuff from them last year!

RabbitsRock · 18/01/2025 08:52

DH & I actually said “ The youth of today” recently then looked at each other & burst out laughing!

Conkerjar · 18/01/2025 09:44

@RabbitsRock a friend told me the name of the full moon the other day and I responded 'They all have names now. When I were a lass...'

StopTalkingSoMuch · 16/01/2025 18:48

I'm an "old" lady of 65.

I hate -
Fenjal bubble baths
Footspas
Kriss Kross books
garden centres
Gardening programmes
Strictly Come Dancing, Bake Off, anything like that.
Any craft - crochet, knitting, lace work, etc.
Bingo

I DO like -
Rock music (favourite band is Linkin Park)
Very hot Indian food
Doc Martens
Ice skating

Edited

I'm late 40's but can see myself turning into you!
Nothing will stop me dancing around my kitchen to Linkin Park/Jason Derulo/Imagine Dragons or whatever else I like that day and that includes any embarrassment to my husband/kids!
Life is short and I intend to have fun 😊

scousemum · 18/01/2025 09:55

I have found my people here Smile

Finding joy in brushed cotton sheets and an early night...9pm is definitely the gateway to 8.30 Wink
Pots of Earl Grey throughout the day
R4 (since my 20s)
Obsessed with feeding birds in garden and have nicknames for individual creatures, make fat concoctions for them in the microwave
Vintage and craft markets are heaven
Tutting at people who have "absolutely no manners" and exclaiming this out loud
Lavender bags in drawers
Smile sagely at younger work colleagues when you've seen and heard it all before
Still get excited at mention of Bagpuss or Tiny Clangers
Crosswords, cribbage and solitaire
Love a fountain pen and ink
Seek out poets on tour
Like watching a log fire with a nice glass of something
Longing for cat(s)

I am 57

Newbie999 · 18/01/2025 09:58

I am considered an old lady at 73
i don’t want my hair to be grey so i slowly went blond in my 60s.
the younger women at my gym say i look much younger and we always have a catch up in the changing room so i keep up to date with their lives as well.

Snowmanscarf · 18/01/2025 10:08

I’m not a big perfume wearer, but one of my two bottles is Yardley.

Crikeyalmighty · 18/01/2025 10:40

@SapphireSeptember I knew it was game over for me when I went into Bon marche and thought- ooh that's nice , looks comfortable ,at more than 1 thing

Currently on a train and found myself looking for the names on the high speed train engines (Olympian Laura Trott). Also love a steam train.

The one thing I’ve taken from this thread (of which I participated early on) is that the joy of the simple cannot be over estimated. Finding peace and happiness in small things that to others might be mundane, is key I think. Life isn’t always about the big things but the everyday things that make us happy and content. Things that make you inwardly sigh (or maybe even outwardly sigh) in that delightful way when life just feels so good. Warmth, and cosiness can be found in such small moments and it’s a nice thing to truly reflect on that.

I’ve also thought of a few more things I do that are old ladyish.
We’ve used the same gift tags on all our Christmas presents for 5 years now I think. Jokey ones (like when I got husband a bottle of sauvage aftershave but we call it sausage so I wrote sosig on the tag) can’t be reused but I keep them anyway because they make me laugh.
I have an old Yankee candle jar filled with ribbons and stuff ‘just in case’.
I went through a stage of ransacking tk maxx for lovely soaps with the sole intention of putting them in my draws to make my undies smell nice.
I have my every day pills in a pill box with days of the week on them. Only one is a prescription pill, the others are vitamins but if I don’t sort them I forget.
I’ve recently been eyeing up proper old lady nighties, the sort my granny wore but I also know I can’t stand anything riding up in the night or I get pissed off.
Brushed cotton bedding in the winter.
45 year old husband also likes to wander down the garden with his hands behind his back in that “old man” is stance. I know he’s thinking when he does that lol.
I think I want to learn to crochet to make a blanket.

AliAtHome · 18/01/2025 11:10

A proper kettle that boils on the hob and whistles.
Tea pot when making more than one cup of tea.
Cake forks
Saucers - noticed many cafes have even stoped using them with cups

angela1952 · 18/01/2025 11:11

2orangey · 16/01/2025 19:00

Early 40s.
Jigsaws
Crosswords/ word puzzles of all kinds
Period dramas
Black and white films
Heatpad on the sofa and heated blanket in bed
Ovaltine/horlicks
Thermal vests, thick socks, elasticated waists and all-round comfy cosiness

Thick socks, oh yeeeeesssss!
(I'm 72 so elderly whatever your limits)
Also Big Pants.

And I have a proper kettle, I've had them for 30 years. Hate saucers and don't drink tea though. Nothing but espressos for me.
