Your 'old lady' habits/tastes ;)

Do you like footspa? Have a crush on Alan Titchmarsh?

I'm 47 and I like to get Kriss Kross puzzle books when I go on holiday, I think their main market is the over 70s. I also like Fenjal bubble bath which I'm sure is rather an old lady thing.

Old ladies also welcome to add their old lady habits too! 😁

Playing backgammon
Parma Violets
Sherry
Begonias
Consistently saying "well, I don't know who any of these so-called celebrities are" whenever there's a celebrity TV show on.

oh me too about the celebs

Inbetweenie993 · 17/01/2025 18:05

Really big pants, and a front fastening elasticated, no underwires, bra.

tommyhoundmum · 17/01/2025 18:05

I am nearly 78 and don't feel like an old lady even though I suppose I am.

I like walking my big dog on the common
reading
current events
gardening and feeding the birds
meeting friends for coffee
and most important - laughing

ThePoliteLion · 17/01/2025 18:10
  1. a glass of dry chilled sherry
  2. reading all the room guides in a National Trust property and looking forward to a cream tea in the cafe afterwards (thinking “ooh, I hope the cafe’s in the stables”)
  3. reading women’s memoirs from the early 20th century to tune into my dear late granny
  4. not liking going out in the evening, unless on holiday
  5. loving going to bed early with a cuppa and said memoir
  6. feeling nostalgic for the long hot summer of 1976
ItGhoul · 17/01/2025 18:14

Jigsaw puzzles

A nice cup of tea and a biscuit (biscuits have to be things like Nice, Rich Tea, shortbread, Garibaldi, custard cream, gingernut, Jammie Dodger etc - I've no time for fancy chunky 'cookies', thank you)

A pie with a suet crust

Cribbage (admittedly an old man thing than old lady thing, but same ballpark)

Complaining that I can't see what's going on in a film because everything seems to be happening in the dark

Gin & bitter lemon

Advocaat

Boiled sweets that taste of aniseed

Those travel sweets that come in a little tin and are dusted with icing sugar

Calling all small kids 'sweetheart'

Refusing to contemplate cooking on an induction hob

Fry's Turkish Delight

Parma Violets

Insisting that today's film stars/footballers/pop stars etc aren't very charismatic compared to the ones of my youth

Madmumof769 · 17/01/2025 18:15

Horlicks. Mid 50s and otherwise like to consider myself quite cool. But I do
like a bedtime horlicks

FBIsMostWanted · 17/01/2025 18:15

I’ve stopped dying my hair as my arms hurt too much putting the dye on, I’m embracing the grey. I've just discovered Port and Lemon and always have mint imperial in my handbag.
My hip hurts in cold weather so I take Epsom salt baths. I love the smell of lavender.
I had my first baby at 40 then my second at 41 so I’m used to being called geriatric!

Arraminta · 17/01/2025 11:03

I'm 54. I love a jigsaw, I mean seriously love them. My current favourite brand are Art & Fable because the detail is incredible and the tiles have a velvety matte finish. I might have actually paid a local joiner to build me a bespoke jigsaw table to my exact specifications.

My perfect Saturday night is to change into my flannel PJs late afternoon, light a scented candle and get totally absorbed in my puzzle.Followed by going to bed early with a cup of Twinnings Lady Grey tea and a good book.

The fuck knows what's happened to me? I used to be the original party girl, did a bit of podium dancing in clubs and I've even been arrested FFS!

Ha, this could be me, dancing on beaches in Ibiza in my youth. Now I am excited to research and visit Anglo Saxon churches and Roman forts.
Love chamomile tea and an early night in my PJs as well - bliss ❤️

Memba · 17/01/2025 18:23

Big knickers
A pocket diary
Making trifle
Boiled wool slippers

All those things make me very happy 😃

MincePieandBaileys · 17/01/2025 18:27

I pay by cash when possible, wear a warm fleecy nighty, Love a glass (or two) of Baileys.

BlueFlowers5 · 17/01/2025 18:30

Watching TV on my iPad in bed from 7pm, with my furry zipper dressing gown on and thermals. With my two cats.
Prefer the radio on all day, not going out after dark and being comfy rather than fashionable.

turbonerd · 17/01/2025 18:33

I’m 45 but have been old for at least a decade. I love embroidery. Love, love, love it.
Also frilly lampshades and comfy rocking chairs.
And elasticated waistbands 😇

orangetriangle · 17/01/2025 18:38

calling everyone dear

HelenaTranscart · 17/01/2025 18:38

At 57, I have come to appreciate bed socks, and starting to think one of those bed cardigans might also be a good idea

MoonWoman69 · 17/01/2025 18:42

I'm only 55, but I do like -
My "throw you across the room" rise and recline (or it will be when I get my toolbox out and work out how to speed it up!)
Non-slip slipper socks.
An afternoon nap of no less than two hours.
Knitting and crochet.
A nice milky drink.
Traditional comfort meals; stew and dumplings, shepherds pies.
Using my slow cooker.
Using a teapot.
The Great Garden Birdwatch.
Planning my tv watching.
Watching As Time Goes By and Canal Boat Diaries.
Cheese and crackers as a little snack.
Cryptic crosswords.
Bootie slippers (Although the ones I have at the moment are fluffy Rudolph ones from Matalan!)
A nice blouse and trousers.
Skechers slip ins.
Eye rolling when I hear what the young uns get up to these days (only because our generation have done it all before! 😁)
Grumbling when I have to go out.
Finding easy grip kitchen utensils, my new Oxo big grip kitchen scissors are the absolute bizz!
Oh and using hand cream! (According to another thread, using it is an old person "thing" 🙄)
There's actually more than I thought! Maybe some of them aren't oldie things, but they are to me!

StopTalkingSoMuch · 16/01/2025 18:51

Medically, 65 is classed as Elderly 😮

Gah! I'm officially elderly. 😥

On the other hand, my 65th birthday did entitle me to a free shingles jab. Hurrah!

ladymalfoy45 · 17/01/2025 18:52

orangetriangle · 17/01/2025 18:38

calling everyone dear

Or calling every man under 60 'young man'. 👌

Emily47 · 17/01/2025 18:54

I'm 71, retired at 63. From the day after i retired i have not used an iron, worn a skirt, tights, black trousers or any makeup or been to the hairdressers.
I now enjoy:-
Living alone just with my dog.
Getting up, having breakfast, then going back to bed.
Having an afternoon nap when i want to.
Only getting dressed to walk my dog.
Getting my pjs on by 5pm.
Getting into bed by 7pm & watching tv/listening to radio
Eating what i want, when i want.
Being cantankerous!

Sam9769 · 17/01/2025 18:57

Comfortable pants!

Arraminta · 17/01/2025 18:58

I'm also inordinately pleased by my neatly made bed with a dab of lavender oil on my pillow.

I love my old fashioned linen cupboard. It's large, deep and made from vintage pine. All my bed linen, towels and pillowcases are very neatly folded and I like to slip lavender sachets in between the folds.

Bubblybits · 17/01/2025 18:59

My name’s Bubbly, I’m 34 and I love mint humbugs.

CrystalSingerFan · 17/01/2025 18:59

Great thread! I have found my people.

Although, I used to be with @ItGhoul and "refusing to contemplate cooking on an induction hob" BUT, after renting for a year with one, and then repeatedly catsitting for my sister who also had one, I'm converted. Mainly because I really want to reach my 70th birthday without burning my (or her) house down. Accidentally.

HowAmITheCatsGranny · 17/01/2025 19:02

I enjoy crocheting (I’ve even made doilies!)
Always buy a puzzle book for a long journey.
Just finished the 1000 piece jigsaw I was given for Christmas.

I have one more, soup spoons. I didn't realise they were old fashioned but have been told so by my friend's teenage daughter. I didn't realise how mortifying it would be for her when I asked for one in a cafe. No, they didn't have them.
If I order soup I'd like it to come with a soup spoon please.

My table is set for guests with soup spoons from my canteen of cutlery😂
