Your 'old lady' habits/tastes ;)

Do you like footspa? Have a crush on Alan Titchmarsh?

I'm 47 and I like to get Kriss Kross puzzle books when I go on holiday, I think their main market is the over 70s. I also like Fenjal bubble bath which I'm sure is rather an old lady thing.

Old ladies also welcome to add their old lady habits too! 😁

does anyone know where I can buy a double ended pastry cutter for mince pies like she had?

I can't remember where mine are from, but it's more comfortable to use single-ended cutters.

its a nostalgia thing, not for comfort!

I pulled out a pair of socks from the back of my drawer and caught a whiff of something nice. After a rummage, I found a lovely bar of Chanel No5 soap that I must have put in.
I shoved it back in!

Im quite partial to a lemon shaped soap from Bronnley if I can find them.

I find myself wanting more wholesome tv, tutting if anything more gratuitous than a peck on the cheek comes on.

Ohh me too , l love all creatures great and small on C5, that's about the level of PDA l can stand .

I’ve started watching old programmes over and over again, I can’t be bothered to get into a new series. Often I start a new programme, invest several hours to it, then realise I don’t like it but can’t get my time back!

Auburngal · 17/01/2025 10:08

I am loving this thread! I'm so glad that I am not the only one that likes to do old dear things.

Crikeyalmighty · 17/01/2025 10:14

@NoCarbsForMe me too- now one foot in the grave on the other hand- !!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 17/01/2025 10:20

I really appreciate a 'good pouring' teapot now, and will point it out to everyone around me.

Snowmanscarf · 17/01/2025 10:43

I brought a proper radio (well clock radio) a couple of years ago, and went for a traditional design. I put it in when I’m ironing. Love it.

Arraminta · 17/01/2025 11:03

I'm 54. I love a jigsaw, I mean seriously love them. My current favourite brand are Art & Fable because the detail is incredible and the tiles have a velvety matte finish. I might have actually paid a local joiner to build me a bespoke jigsaw table to my exact specifications.

My perfect Saturday night is to change into my flannel PJs late afternoon, light a scented candle and get totally absorbed in my puzzle.Followed by going to bed early with a cup of Twinnings Lady Grey tea and a good book.

The fuck knows what's happened to me? I used to be the original party girl, did a bit of podium dancing in clubs and I've even been arrested FFS!

I became hooked on jigsaws about three years ago. I buy most of them from charity shops as they can get quite expensive. I like to take my time with them so a 1,000 piece can take me a couple of weeks or more, then I return it back to a charity shop. I may treat myself though to an Art and Fable as I keep the ones I particularly liked doing. I find it so relaxing and therapeutic.

Lol at your previously debauched life 😁

mollymile · 17/01/2025 11:59

@Arraminta , 🤗Love your post. Someone ought to be able to turn that into the new Miss Marple.

NordicwithTeen · 17/01/2025 12:00

I think I've just realised that my ideal job would be being the jigsaw puzzle tester in charity shops. You know, making sure there's not one piece missing...

DustyLee123 · 17/01/2025 12:20

Apparently John Lewis is good for jigsaws. I was actually having a conversation about them recently!

longtompot · 17/01/2025 12:22

I loved Badedas since I first smelt it in my 20s. My dhs grandma used it every day in her bath.
I love walking around lovely gardens and having afternoon tea, always have done.
Hate going to plans and restaurants where the music is too loud to talk.
In the past 15 years I've learnt to crochet and more recently knit.
I love my wheeled shopping trolley as it saves my arms and shoulders when buying heavier things from the supermarket.
Chilled sherry is utter bliss.
Proper juniper gin and tonic is heaven. None of this flavoured stuff.
As is washing blowing in the wind on the line.
I am partial to a puzzle book. Not bought one for a while so must get a new one.
These may be 'old lady' things but the 'old ladies' who do them must have started when they were younger. You don't suddenly start and be good at something like knitting in your 70s.
I'm 53 and also love rock, disco and dance music, wearing my dms.

MsRinky · 17/01/2025 12:38

I turned 52 today, so am probably allowed to lean in to my love of Badedas, sherry, cashmere socks, dusting powder, NT membership, heated throws etc. I just got varifocal contact lenses, which are actual witchcraft, so can ditch the reading glasses for now.

I also love live gigs, festivals and lifting heavy weights, so I like to think I'm still aiming for badass old lady overall...

What is your rose pruning technique, may I ask?

How long have you got? 😂

One thing is that roses are associated with Valentine's Day, and you need to have pruned them by then.

I involuntarily groan when I get into my friend's sports car as it is too low. Have been doing this since I had my first child at age 30.

I bought my first proper sports car in my 50s and found it the most comfortable car I'd ever owned! A cousin who was a few years older was due to have a hip replacement the week after she came to stay, she finished up in my car so OH could travel with her daughter to give directions and she too was surprised how comfortable it was, I think it's to do with having one's legs out straight!

see I prune twice. Once when the leaves are all off to take the long bits off to avoid wind rock plus any skinny or dead bits, and then again in march to shape and really shorten plus remove any dead bits and open up the airspace. I also have roses that have pretty hips which the birds eat so I leave them as alone as I can until march.

wheresmyshoe · 17/01/2025 16:15

I have one more, soup spoons. I didn't realise they were old fashioned but have been told so by my friend's teenage daughter. I didn't realise how mortifying it would be for her when I asked for one in a cafe. No, they didn't have them.
If I order soup I'd like it to come with a soup spoon please.

I have soup spoons. I don’t want to drink my soup with a dessert spoon thank you very much.

DustyLee123 · 17/01/2025 17:10

I have cake forks and soup spoons. I still use Tupperware too.
I saw someone using a palette knife when icing a cake the other day, so I’m wanting one of those now.
And I wish I’d kept DM’s pearl effect handle cake slice, I might need one of those too!

Changedforadvice · 17/01/2025 17:55

I love my thermals!

In my 20s, teaching in Italy, I remember a student, of the same age, gasping in horror on seeing naked midriff when my jumper inched up as I got something of a shelf. Me and fellow teachers later had a good laugh about the idea of wearing a vest beyond the age of 8 and that was that.

Fast forward 20 odd years and I cannot get enough of thermal vests, short sleeved or long sleeved tops also apply. So much so I get a Damart catalogue through the post...with the option to pay by cheque 😂

Playing backgammon
Parma Violets
Sherry
Begonias
Consistently saying "well, I don't know who any of these so-called celebrities are" whenever there's a celebrity TV show on.

You can borrow jigsaws from libraries as well.
