Your 'old lady' habits/tastes ;)

Do you like footspa? Have a crush on Alan Titchmarsh?

I'm 47 and I like to get Kriss Kross puzzle books when I go on holiday, I think their main market is the over 70s. I also like Fenjal bubble bath which I'm sure is rather an old lady thing.

Old ladies also welcome to add their old lady habits too! 😁

Eyeliner and mascara on lower lashes. Think it’s just habit now. I tried without and have to admit I did look younger and fresher, but just can’t seem to give it up!

Are you not supposed to wear mascara on lower lashes?

I don't wear eyeliner but always put mascara on lower lashes

TeaMistress · 16/01/2025 22:52

I'm only in my early forties. I love absolute peace and quiet in the house and can't stand anything that makes a racket. I love sitting with my crochet and cups of tea. 9pm bedtimes are heaven with a good book. I quite like gentle tv with a blanket tucked around me ( my favourite comfort watch is Jonathan Creek / Midsomer Murders / Father Brown etc) I love my sheepskin slippers when it's cold and brewing loose tea in a proper teapot. My idea of a lovely holiday is wandering round museums and sitting in nice cafes with a cup of tea and cake. I do sound a bit like an old lady. That's OK though. I like a slower gentler pace of life.

Since my early 40s the garden centre has been a place of joy and a meet up place with friends. I don't see it as old lady.
Rich tea biscuits sandwiched with proper butter. Like my grandma had.
Sheepskin slippers.

Samandytimlucypeterolivia · 16/01/2025 23:00

I love my foot warmer. Which when marketed shows an old lady. I mean I feel 80 if that counts 😂

Brownowl111 · 16/01/2025 23:01

I like Hotter shoes, I have a flask, I check location of toilets on any outing, I too like a nice sit down.

scalt · 16/01/2025 23:02

Here’s an interesting old lady activity, nobody has mentioned it so far…

Walking netball!

Yes, it really exists, I’ve run sessions of it, and in some places, it’s very popular. Netball where no running or jumping is allowed, mostly played by older ladies (or younger women who prefer a game that’s less physical), a few of my regulars were in their eighties, and the gane can be just as competitive as actual netball. And some of the ladies wear Skechers.

soberserene · 16/01/2025 23:02

A slip under an unlined dress.
A vest 9 months of the year.
Have eiderdowns on the beds.

Excellent thread. Nice slice of Battenberg all round.

Does anyone have young fellas with premature Grandad tendencies - like whistling or collecting odds and sods in glass jars in the garage?

Yes! My dp stands at the window with his hands clasped behind his back, like my grandad, complaining about where people have parked on the street.

He used the word "youths" last week.

He's 36.....

I love a nice bottle of Harvey's Bristol Cream sherry

Yum!

A proper old lady would avoid anything which makes the bath slippy. Perhaps you mean Badedas?

As a seriously old lady, almost Sunset Strip, Badedas is lethal, I've managed to flood the bathroom a few times when I've dropped back into the water. I've learned to almost empty the bath first. Fellow oldies should be able to interpret the Sunset Strip reference!

LuluBlakey1 · 16/01/2025 23:13

DH- 45- went to work in a tweed jacket and scarf today.
Was sorting screws and nails into different sizes and different jars in the garage last weekend 'sick of not being able to find what I need easily'.
Takes a flask on a walk.
Now wears reading glasses which he looks for when they are ontop of his head.

Legendofthelostkeys · 16/01/2025 23:15

I bought some new Cotton Traders slippers online last week and was thrilled when they arrived.
I also love my full length cosy button through dressing gown.
I sometimes read The People's Friend.
I've booked a ticket to see Cliff Richard next December.

BunfightBetty · 16/01/2025 23:17

I drive extremely sedately and never, ever break the speed limit.

I'm obsessed with sitting away from the door and the draught in cafes and restaurants. I'd rather go home than be shivering in the icy blast every time someone comes in or out.

I got all excited, heart racing, the lot, the other day when I found the most exquisite box of Bronnley soaps in a gift shop. Each cake was properly wrapped in tissue and it all comes in a beautiful box. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. Either that or I'd entered a time slip and was back in 1981. It was heaven.

I go in the Poundshop and Home Bargains just to buy the multi-packs of Raspberry Ruffles and Fry's Orange Cream.

In the garage there is about a ton of containers of every nail, tack etc know to man (or woman in case the Offendees are still up) curtesy of late Father's garage and my late OH's squirrel tendencies. Some are in old cigarette tins, they're that old.

Dontevenlookatme · 16/01/2025 23:18

I crochet
I have a heated blanket over my lap most evenings.
I like a milky drink before bed.
I don’t get up until I’ve had a cup of tea made by DH
I don’t like showers, prefer a quick strip wash with a flannel or a nice hot bath
Could watch Ever Decreasing Circles on a loop, ditto The Good Life
I’m not as old as I sound.

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 16/01/2025 23:19

I have a cheque book. I write 2 cheques a year to HMRC.

(They go in a brown envelope, usually stapled to a complement slip, and get posted second class.)

My twenty year old son. He’s at uni, partying hard, but when he’s home he has old person tendencies. He likes a blanket over him when watching tv, goes to bed by about 8pm, prefers a hot chocolate to alcohol. I sometimes suspect he prefers his grandpa vibe to his partying one lol.

A lot of these things seem to be people liking things, because they're cold! Presumably the average person is now as cold as a Granny of yester-year.

I moved tables in a cafe the other day, due to the draught from the door. First time ever. DH looked at me like I was crackers 😂

I'm 36 but I love Estee Lauder perfumes because my beloved grandmother (born in 1923) wore them and it reminds me of her, but also -- I like it! My mother is horrified as she thinks it's only for very old ladies.
