So from July 2025 people will have to show robust proof of age.

Surely not many people will be happy to scan passport/ driving license info these sites

It's an ofcom ruling announced today

In the UK, or generally?

itsnotalwaysthateasy · 16/01/2025 12:46

I think the laws changed in 2023. Creators have had to input their formal ID into these sites for well over a year.

janmarmay83 · 16/01/2025 12:46

It's not creaters it's the viewers as of July 2025

People will just use VPNs, nothing will change.

Excellent deterrent!

But if they have to upload proof of age, that’ll still identify them, regardless of their IP address

I would imagine other counties will follow

No one should be on those sites anyway. It’s an exploitation

Ahh yes. I see that logic re VPN now because other countries won’t have that law.

pinkwaffles · 16/01/2025 12:52

I think everyone should start buying shares in VPN's because their popularity is about to skyrocket 😂

No one should buy a lot so. This is being put in place to stop underage viewing.

Excellent news. Though the numbskull men and women who get their kicks from scummy sexual practices will feel those practices have been normalised.

EveInEden · 16/01/2025 13:00

Will be an interesting databreach if the data gets stolen and names revealed.

AquaPeer · 16/01/2025 13:00

It will have an impact. People will use VPNs of course but many casual users just won’t bother.

bearing in mind the tools the government have at their disposal, this is a good move

I agree. This is what will put most people off

Maybe not hardcore users but the more casual

Only concern is will it lead people into the darker parts of the web

You wont get rid of pornography.

That's my concern. Will it go more underground and have less "oversight"

I think we are long past the days of mucky mags

OP posts:
MightyGoldBear · 16/01/2025 13:11

Unfortunately it just makes too much money. All the technology is there to completely shut it down.
I doubt much will change. There will always be ways to get round it.

EmmaMaria · 16/01/2025 13:12

I don't support these sorts of sites, but I see no feasible way of stuffing the genie back in the bottle. If younger people want to get on to these sorts of sites, they will. End of story. Nothing has stopped them so far. Nothing will stop them going forward. These sorts of things make excellent sound bites about taking action, but they change nothing.

Anothercoffeeafter3 · 16/01/2025 13:13

Buys shares in a VPN! Also fake ID is so easy to come by these days it won't have an impact. I would be more worried about a data breach including stolen ID that has been used.

Most governments have been unable to prevent teenage hackers from getting in when they want to - which sophisticated tools do you think they have?

Tommarvolo · 16/01/2025 13:14

Maybe we need a government porn website as an approved alternative, involving people running around with union flags Benny Hill style.

Lyn348 · 16/01/2025 13:14

It's not going to be perfect I'm sure, but it's better than doing nothing at all.

Mrsttcno1 · 16/01/2025 13:16

I don’t think it’s going to make much difference really and even under the new rules you don’t necessarily have to give ID, you can also use an email address to verify age (and we all know you can make a new email account with any DOB you choose), and another of the suggestions is mobile operator age check, so anyone who has parental controls should already be excluded from the content.
