So from July 2025 people will have to show robust proof of age.

Surely not many people will be happy to scan passport/ driving license info these sites

On a reading forum? Is that erotic fiction or are people posting videos.

Sounds bizarre

It's everywhere, OP. I'm in a (terrifying)FB group called "Parenting in a tech world" or something, for members to ask questions/ share advice about keeping their DC safe online, and every second post is from a devastated parent who's discovered their 9 year old is looking at porn on Pinterest, or Temu, or etsy, or Spotify, even on Google maps. I mean, it is literally everywhere, and it only takes one kid in the class who knows where to find it and tells everyone else.
So while age verification is a step in the right direction I think it'll make a negligible difference to how prevalent porn use is amongst children.

The first time I learned to use a proxy server was during IT in year 7 of secondary school. Everyone was using them to get around the websites blocked by IT.

At the time, it wasn't long after 9/11, and the 11 year old kids in my class weren't using proxy servers to access porn but a beheading video. It was horrific. I didn't seek out anything like that, but I remember seeing it on the screen of the person who was sat in front of me.

I was one of the people teaching others to use proxy servers to get on MySpace in year 7! I would rather my 11 year old DS watched onlyfans than were on the Tor browser 24/7, people do realise it's used for the dark web not just hardcore porn.

SuzieNine · 16/01/2025 21:58

Of course it won’t put off adults and older teens who will easily figure out ways round it but if it deters children who might casually browse out of curiosity then that’s surely a good thing?

The average preteen and younger teen who might have previously accidentally stumbled across porn is likely not going to be able to easily set up a VPN, at least the majority won’t.

Jabbabong · 16/01/2025 22:03

There are browsers that have vpns included. It is a complete waste of time.

softsummer · 16/01/2025 22:08

@PurpleCarpets But it's not better to just continue to let children have free access to (for eg) Pornhub, as though this is fine and acceptable as some kind of vaccination against them using the dark web. Pornhub etc is terrible in itself.

What would you like to see happen?

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 16/01/2025 22:17

I doubt it will stop adults but hopefully it will reduce the number of children viewing and IMO that's most important.

Snorlaxo · 16/01/2025 22:29

Of course not. The UK market is one of many and most countries aren’t going to introduce ID checks for porn. I remember reading that the ID/ age checks on pornhub / OF sorts of sites aren’t robust and you can find underage girls on there.

People will get fake ids, steal identity cards/documents, use VPNs… I predict a future AIBU where a child has used their father’s tablet and used the saved ID details to look at porn.

TikTok is being banned in the US soon and guess what happened ? Americans moved to a diffferent Chinese social media app called RedNote.

There’s always a way round these things and the worry is that kids will go on the dark web and see the sort of material that is unacceptable to even OF and Pornhub.

Jabbabong · 16/01/2025 22:35

TooBigForMyBoots · 16/01/2025 22:16

What would you like to see happen?

Obviously we would all like to see children being protected from this sort of thing online. However they are pissing into the wind because what they are intending to implement is easily circumvented by VPNs.

It's a bit shit that such material is easily accessible online but that's where the world is at.

The policing responsibility has to fall to the parents to reduce their children's access as much as is practicable.

If I wanted anything to happen it's Tiktok, Twitter and Instagram being impossible to download on a phone owned by an under 16 maybe even under 18s. They are harming the mental health of many adults let alone children. That is something that can more realistically be legislated in the UK with the onus on the tech firms to make it happen before their handsets can be sold here. Possibly even retro installing on updates for old handsets during mandatory updates.

Edited

I can see that happening. Like Australia.

In the meantime I'm fine with proposals for proof of age. It's not perfect. Proof of age isn't perfect offline either, but I'm glad we have it where we have it.

I see no reason to oppose this measure.

dayslikethese1 · 16/01/2025 22:46

I have never stumbled across porn accidentally.... I am just wondering when ppl say kids find it accidentally everywhere, how does that happen? Or is it more like their friends share stuff with them? And presumably at home you can put controls on devices but do the kids just bypass these? With this new law, ppl could use fake or stolen IDs or VPN as others have said which seems easy enough.

RedToothBrush · 16/01/2025 22:52

MifsBr0wn · 16/01/2025 13:04

You wont get rid of pornography.

Pornography has been so desired it's led technology change.

Remember betamax v VHS? Betamax was better quality. In theory it should have won but didn't. Why? Because VHS was cheaper to use and easier to copy. Thus making porn content was much easier and cheaper to massively reproduce. So VHS won.

Then the change from dial up to broadband was driven in no small amount for demand for porn.

It can happen. My friend watched a serious documentary called something like "battle of the sexes in 20th century". Omg the stuff that was then suggested to her!

Yes the word sex was in the title but it was not about "sex".

Fabulous. Could this be helpful in proving intent in rape cases of the accused has a history of accessing raoe porn on this website? Ciuld the pkkice request search hustory? I highly doubt it but it would be great if these vile, sad humans were made accountable for their viewing choices.

How will anyone be able to find out who has viewed what? No one is going to input their real id. As discussed up thread it will take seconds to avoid this requirement for anyone who is intelligent enough to use a computer. It's just a sound bite for people who don't really know what's going on.

BountifulPantry · 16/01/2025 23:07

Waste of taxpayer money to pass a completely useless piece of legislation.

haXXor · 16/01/2025 23:37

The most popular kid in the class will be the one who shows the others how to set up TOR.

I doubt that online porn, or the pointless age verification laws, were what Tim Berners-Lee was thinking of when he wrote the first web server and web browser.

  1. Download TOR from the app store
  2. Using a finger, touch the icon on your screen that says "TOR"
  3. Start using TOR!

It's the same as any browser, just anonymous and more secure (and slower because of the way it anonymous and encrypts the connections).

I was thinking of the setup on a laptop, which is, or at least was last time I set it up, a little trickier.

TOR is most definitely not the same as "any other browser". It accesses the internet over a protocol specifically designed to anonymise where traffic is originating and going.

It's likely been compromised by security services over the years, but is still pretty effective for allowing access to sites and services that are otherwise blocked in a region.

All this frothing will deliver is the usual. Law abiding folk will respect it, and those that don't wish to abide by "the law" will evade it. Trivially.

I mean that's the job of parents.

So is preventing children from accessing porn by setting up filters and blockers, yet here we are.

janmarmay83 · 17/01/2025 11:19

Teens have always found a way to access "porn". Back in the 90s it was magazines that dodgy newsagents or older brothers would get for them. Now it's just easier
It's hard for parents to stay one step ahead

That's not an excuse not to bother. or leave it for others to deal with.
