So from July 2025 people will have to show robust proof of age.

Surely not many people will be happy to scan passport/ driving license info these sites

Plus it really wouldn’t be difficult at all for someone who is underage to simply take a photo of their parent/adults ID and use that.

Laughingravy · 16/01/2025 13:37

Another of the suggestions is mobile operator age check, so anyone who has parental controls should already be excluded from the content.
I've never got my default parental control switched off on my mobile! Last time I tried in one of the network's shops the assistant - young enough to be my granddaughter - said I had to prove I was over 18 and prove it was my phone.....

My only concern about this is who gets to draw the line? I am occasionally denied access to websites that aren't porn - think alternative lifestyle stuff.

I imagine the line will be dean at 18

It's a good move, should have been done years ago.

UndermyShoeJoe · 16/01/2025 13:46

I mean there’s loads of it over on a reading forum app. People will just move from Hub to there no I’d checks.

On a reading forum? Is that erotic fiction or are people posting videos.

Sounds bizarre

I don’t mean books I just wasn’t naming it. A play on words so to speak.

It has its own am I being the asshole section, relationships, in the news, as well as lots of pornographic sub sections.

So unless the pages ban the porn or places even like Mumsnet but not actually Mumsnet require age verification it just moves to another platform.

Unfortunately it just makes too much money. All the technology is there to completely shut it down.
I doubt much will change. There will always be ways to get round it.

Who wants to shut it down?

roibustea · 16/01/2025 14:06

Don't imagine it will make much difference, many men (or women) probably won't care particularly about scanning in their ID. Loads of people give their information to online sex shops, or porn subscriptions. Doesn't Only Fans require payment anyway? Don't think there's a huge difference between providing credit card, email, address etc and providing your driving license. A data breach could get you either way. And not so long ago, blokes would happily go to their local corner shop to buy porn - even having to ask their newsagent to fetch it for them. I would think that would be a lot more embarrassing than the slim possibility of a data breach. Especially as a data breach would presumably reveal loads of people, so it would be bloody unlucky anyone you knew would be poring through thousands of names and recognise you! So the only way it could come back to bite you would be if your ID was linked to your email or address and the hacker used that to threaten you... but they can (and do) do that anyway with your credit card data. So you'll not be in any more danger than if you buy a vibrator on Love Honey - and loads of people do that without concern.

It might stop children though, although kids tend to be pretty good at finding means and ways so it certainly won't stop them entirely. Hopefully there's a decrease though.

Dbank · 16/01/2025 14:19

I can't imagine an age verification that can't be easily bypassed, or can someone explain one to me?

andIsaid · 16/01/2025 14:20

MifsBr0wn · 16/01/2025 13:04

You wont get rid of pornography.

You also won't get rid of murder, robbery, abuse and so on.

But what you can do is make it harder.

You can make it unacceptable.

Flatbellyfella · 16/01/2025 14:32

What does VPN stand for ?
How do these sites work ? are people paid to submit videos of themselves?
I have certainly lived a sheltered existence in my 78 years not being drawn to this type of thing.

PurpleCarpets · 16/01/2025 14:32

The easiest way round age controls (or any controls) is to download the TOR browser and access the sites anonymously via the dark web, which for the terrifying reputation it has is surprisingly easy. Downloading videos as torrents also works (and generally better than streaming).

(Although in both cases, especially TOR, there is a danger that users get drawn into material that isn't on mainstream sites.)

Virtual private network. It's a trick to make the website you're looking at think that you're in a different country from where you actually are. If the UK imposes controls you could switch to seeming to be in Finland.

Toothunsure · 16/01/2025 14:35

Does anyone know - do sites like only fans already have a age verification system in place for anyone wanting to view porn?

housemaus · 16/01/2025 14:36

I'm not sure why you think having to have ID will put anyone off? Maybe people with very conservative families etc who might feel concern about someone finding out or people watching questionable or extreme types of porn, but the vast majority of people I know who watch porn would do nothing more than shrug if that fact was made public? Lots of people watch porn, it's not especially remarkable or shocking.

Lonelycrab · 16/01/2025 14:38

It’s a good move but one thing I think it’ll do is make people turn to X instead. It’s absolutely awash with porn now, you really don’t have to look very far.

And I can’t see Musk listening to anyone that tells him what to do. Except maybe Trump or Putin…

Ficklebricks · 16/01/2025 14:46

Ladyluckinred · 16/01/2025 12:50

But if they have to upload proof of age, that’ll still identify them, regardless of their IP address

Not if they connect on a VPN. It changes your location so the website thinks you are connecting from a country with different rules. The world is unlikely to ever all be unanimous on this issue so there will always be a country to choose from as your pretend location.

Laughingravy · 16/01/2025 14:53

@janmarmay83 I was more thinking who chooses what is considered porn? Most of it is obvious but my mobile network consider some tattoo sites and the like for over 18s only.
And of course if a wifi hub has got cleared as over 18 then anyone signing in can surf what they like unless the administrator block sites.

Oh I'm sorry. I completely misunderstood you.

Yea that's true. Where is the line! A short skirt a nipple?

VPN.

Such a pointless piece of legislation.

That's not how this works. It's ONLY a UK law.

So if you're not in the UK . . . .**

Helpel · 16/01/2025 15:12

Statistics show 27% of 11 year olds had seen porn. Hopefully this will at least reduce the figure for that age group and push it even just a bit older, when children are starting to organise their thoughts and understand things in a more adult way. If this legislation dropped the figure to 5% of 11 year olds and 27% of say 14 year olds, I for one, as a mother to two girls aged 8 and 9, would consider it worthwhile.

They just ask "Click here for access only if you're over 18".
