Which celebs have you met in daily life?

I just met actor Irene Marot, who played Ron Dixon’s wife DD in Brookside, when she asked me for directions on a London street corner. Happy to report that she is absolutely delightful IRL. (I told her she looked familiar and she seemed surprised and chuffed that I had recognised her.)

So, which “celebrities” (A-list or otherwise) have you met by chance in a “civilian” or daily life context. And what were they like?

Andre Agassi in ice cream shop in Arizona,

A few footballers - all very pleasant and personable.

David Jason who was absolutely vile and utterly rude to my two young daughters.

David Jason used to infrequently go into DH's workplace, was know as a cranky, miserable old git, with a equally miserable looking much younger wife.

Used to work in film distribution and managed a cinema, have met quite a few and all were lovely. Jeremy Paxman, Nick Park (of Aardman animation), David Tennant, Ian McEwan, plus a few whose names I now can't remember due to perimenopause. Also have stood very close to a few celebs at Cannes, including Antonio Banderas, Nicolas Cage and Harvey Weinstein 😬

Timmy Mallet in the 80's, well it was my mum that spoke to him, I was so star struck I was rendered mute 😅Really nice man.

My mum had a few surgeries at Stoke Mandeville hospital, Jimmy Saville was a huge open secret even then apparently.

I think that's the thing, he gets quite involved with and excited by the projects he does, and it's actually refreshing to see someone share the ins and outs of it all. He recently played Norbot in Wallace & Gromit and spent so much time hyping it up! Also love his Christmas horror countdown. 🤣 The effort he puts in is brilliant! Would have loved to see the LoG panto! I bet the atmosphere was amazing!

it was so funny! we had a great time. they were brilliant. they make such a great team

Jeremy Sheffield is also ex- Holbh

It was the tall dark haired one who went out my with Rachel Stevens. He was very arrogant and dismissive when he was a customer in the bar that I worked in 😱

There's allegedly a lot of dirt on this man, he's a wrong un.

Jeremy Edwards .

The Other Jeremy (Sheffield) was in a film called Creep ( and he was a creep but not in it for long )
And in Corrie with one of the loveliest storylines ever .

He might be nice IRL or not Wink

Ah that one was Jeremy Edwards.

Notmoanaagain · 17/01/2025 18:49

Oh I thought Jeremy Edwards would be nice for some reason

Notmoanaagain · 17/01/2025 18:51

What are people saying about Vernon Kay? Surely he’s as lovely and down to earth in real life?

Has anyone met Dermot O’ leary? If he was horrible in real life I think i’d lose my faith in humanity, I think he’s so lovely

Years ago, before it was all revealed about the dirty beggar, I read an article somewhere about Stoke Mandeville. One of the things it said was What's the idea of a nightmare? Waking up to find Jimmy Savile at the end of your bed.
I was surprised as it was generally thought he was a good man, doing all that work for charidee. Obviously his secret was known at the hospital.

Shared a train carriage with Eric Cantona when three trains had been cancelled and it was rammed and unpleasant. He had to stand by the toilet all the way for a two hour journey.
Despite not looking particularly happy with the arrangement (don't blame him!) he didn't complain or try to get a seat and he was pleasant to the constant stream of people asking for autographs.

I ate lunch with Jeff Rich (from Status Quo) in our school staff room. He was ordinary in a nice way. I had no idea who he was (thought he was a supply teacher) so was just chatting to him about family and how noisy year 2 were. It was only when another staff member came in carrying a guitar and asking him to sign in that the penny dropped!

My DC have both worked on Hollyoaks multiple times and say the nicest two actors are Tony and Lucas who chat to everybody. They've never said anything bad about anybody but the previous head teacher (the anti gay one) couldn't remember his lines.

Dillythedallyduck · 17/01/2025 19:44

I'm disappointed that a few people have said Kate Garraway was bitchy, she seems so nice!

Cilla Black. I was the rehearsal actress on Blind date. I was so excited to meet her as remembered her from Surprise Surprise. She swept in - glared down and me and sniped ‘you’re a bit small aren’t you’ in a very hostile tone. I was totally shocked and disappointed.

I work in aviation and she is legendary in aviation circles for being utterly vile to cabin crew.

SallyWD · 17/01/2025 19:54

Barbara Windsor. She was nice but seemed very weary. It seemed like she felt she had to put on an act and be the Barbara Windsor. She was all "Oh 'ello darling!" but just seemed so tired.
Nigella Lawsom was charming and beautiful as you'd expect and much smaller than I imagined.
Gary Linekar was a bit snappy and impatient. Rory Mcgrath and Jimmy Nail were a right laugh and in high spirits.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 17/01/2025 21:03

DH's friend once opened the door to Mark Owen carrying a dead cat. Apparently he was pleasant enough. And it wasn't even the friend's cat!

I'd have acted traumatised and in need of comforting if I'd had the presence of mind.

I drunkenly introduced myself to Ant and Dec in a club in London once. We discussed their hair and they were very unassuming.

GrannyNannyMagratandGreebo · 17/01/2025 22:08

Terry Pratchett signed one of my books. I was completely bamboozled and could only utter "can you sign my book, please?" I wasn't very well that day but wouldn't duck out off the queue 😆

Also met Pete Waterman. Well, I kind of did. Nearly knocked him flying because I was late to a football match. I didn't recognise him at the time but I did remember to say sorry at least 😆

Celebrity is a bizarre concept and some on here described as lovely in my experience have a completely different aura but we never know what they are going through that day or in their lives. I instead go by the volume of animal magnetism , presence and Tony Slattery who had very much fallen under the radar at the point he was on my bus journey was like something out of a dream. He exuded kindness, authenticity and dreamy dark handsome good looks. He was giving up his seat constantly for anyone more in need and seemed delighted to just be sharing a journey with us all on public transport. No wonder beautiful Mark was devoted to him for 40 years despite all his battles with mental Health. There was something quite beautiful about their love story. Wonderful docu on youtube he even top trumped Terence Stamp who was dapper in a red velvet jacket bus hopping and flirting with the lady driver magical 🤩RIP Tony

Yes, RIP, poor sweet man. And love to his wonderful, devoted partner as well. I also watched that YouTube documentary. There was such tenderness and care between them that it brought tears to my eyes. Tony Slattery was raped as a child by a priest, and it clearly destroyed his life. Same old story. The single, wicked act of one human destroying the life (well, lives, since his partner also had to deal with the fallout) of another.

Couldn’t have put it better myself love to his partner Mark 😘

I think I must be a celeb's dream as I only ever seem to realise who I thought "looked familiar" after they've left and anyone with me enlightens me that "no, that was not 'possibly one of your mum's friends', that was Sandy Toksvig!" (true story).

GrandTheftWalrus · 18/01/2025 00:47

I said hello to someone from river city (Scottish soap) thinking I knew her in my local morrisons. Wasn't till later i realised.

Radio4head · 18/01/2025 07:14

Tracey Ann Oberman. Heard her publically and loudly excoriate a stunned box office worker after a ticket she had arranged and promised to someone hadn't been honoured. Such a shame, as she was outstanding in the play we'd just seen, The Merchant of Venice 1936.

Radio4head · 18/01/2025 07:22

Jennifer Saunders in Kentish Town in 1990/91. I couldn't place her initially, she noticed I was staring, lifted her sunglasses briefly, smiled coquettishly. When I said "Jennifer Saunders" she smiled more broadly and nodded her head. I have never encountered anyone with such instant charisma.

God I know that feeling. There was a dark haired guy approaching me one day in New Bond St and I thought ' I know him from that pub in Leigh on Sea but I can't recall his name.' So I just nodded stupidly as I realised the woman by his side was Linda Eastman. Duh. When I got back to my office all the girls were hanging out the windows for a glimpse of Macca.
