What’s the most ridiculous thing you’ve read in a Trip Advisor review?

Currently on a lovely holiday. The Trip Advisor reviews of our resort are unrecognisable. Which has inspired me to ask: what’s the most ridiculous thing you’ve read in a Trip Advisor review?

Here are mine:

That the hotel had no private beach. When it wasn’t by the sea.

That the breakfast food was all cooked on request so you couldn’t see it before you ordered it. It was a tiny boutique hotel where they cooked you anything you wanted from an extensive menu so, no, it wasn’t a buffet.

That the kitchen area had a different worktop to the granite worktop shown in the photo. Because that definitely matters if you’re on holiday and not renovating your kitchen.

That it was hypocritical to promote fitness while simultaneously pushing junk food by - wait for it - selling ice creams beside an outdoor pool.

😂 my mum pointed out that the TripAdvisor reviews on a holiday I was looking at weren't that good so I should reconsider (it was 4 stars overall mind)

But I'm always skeptical about reviews, personally.

I saw one in one of those compilation articles about "funniest TripAdvisor reviews" where someone complained that Mount Rushmore was too out-of-the-way and shouldn't be in South Dakota because it takes too long to get there from New York.

SnakesAndArrows · 14/01/2025 09:16

That the staff replenishing the buffet breakfast didn’t speak English. Also that the corridors were narrow and the lift too small for three people with suitcases.

In a >100 year old 3 storey budget hotel in Paris.

ETA it was a lovely hotel with excellent friendly staff happy to work with my high school French.

CaptainAwkward · 14/01/2025 09:18

One review complained that there was ‘too much foreign food’ at the hotel

This consisted of items such as feta cheese, olives, fresh vegetables and salads and meats. In Greece

It was a lovely hotel and provided packed lunches (if you wanted to explore) that included peaches the size of a baby’s head and I’d very much like to go there again

I work in a medieval building. We've had a few complaining about uneven floors etc - the building is 700 years old. We do have warnings around the building to be careful!

Foreign food and not many people speak English are always plus points for me on holiday, but I have seen similar reviews. I have also seen bad reviews noting a spider in the bedroom - bugs travel too! - and people complaining about too much sand or seaweed. Also read complaints about cultural differences such as slow service in the Caribbean.

There's a fun one local to us. There's a 1 star review for a pub where a man says the pub is terrible and not to go there because his wife met another man there and cheated on him. Pub's fault.

"Not enough English food" in a Spanish hotel.

youngestisapsycho · 14/01/2025 09:43

Local restaurants were too 'Spanishy' for the guests in the hotel in Spain!

Ahwig · 14/01/2025 09:44

I read that the breakfasts were " samey" . The thing is breakfasts are " samey". The hotel did, fresh fruit, 4 different types of bread, various pastries, egg ( done 4 different ways) bacon, sausage, various yoghurts, omelettes made to order, granola, cereals and porridge. So in theory they had the same breakfast every day but the only thing I could think of that they didn't have was kippers.

TheDandyLion · 14/01/2025 09:45

The Ben Nevis review compaining there isn't a cafe at the top.

Tracystubbs · 14/01/2025 09:46

My ex lives for a TripAdvisor review

Corkers include 'didn't like the glass my coke came in','expensive for a burger' (he didn't pay-i did and the food was lovely),'no cable tv' (the very cheap hotel didnt say a word about a tv,let alone cable) and 'fancied the waitress but she wasn't interested in me' one star

It's open to abuse from idiots

I think there is a similar thread in classics

'THICKOS ON TRIPADVISOR

The title made everyone laugh as it sounded Greek

But good to start a new thread. I love all these 😂

Cattenberg · 14/01/2025 09:49

Some American bloke who went for a swim in some natural hot springs in Iceland … and complained that towels were not provided. I wonder if he also expected towels to be provided whenever he went to the beach?

MontyNojangles · 14/01/2025 09:49

I saw one that said it was "too hot" in Egypt.

And another that complained they were in a family resort and they could "hear children"

EmmasDilemmas · 14/01/2025 09:52

A McDonald’s they visited near the hotel was dirty and they saw a rat by a canal when walking round the city 🤣

usernother · 14/01/2025 09:52

Best one was a couple complaining about Daniella Westbrook. It was a hotel in Benidorm old town, she latched on to the couple, and wouldn't leave them alone. Not sure how this is the fault of the hotel. At a hotel I stayed at in Majorca one review complained that there wasn't enough (British) food to make a proper Sunday dinner. Another one complained because hotel did not provide English tea bags. I wish the hotels would respond and tell these people to piss off.

Stickthatupyourdojo · 14/01/2025 09:54

I read one just yesterday for a beach in the UK that gave 1 star as he was told it was nudist beach but disappointed no one else took their clothes off (it wasn't a nudist beach). They had a sensible name and a photo so I think it was genuine and not just someone having a laugh. I also read one for a hotel in Ibiza that was at the top of a small cliff and had a path directly onto the beautiful beach. They gave it one star as it should have an escalator built into the cliff as it's too hard to walk up.

Lickityspit · 17/01/2025 12:06

That there was no gift shop or coffee shop at the top of Ben Nevis 😂

CaptainMyCaptain · 17/01/2025 12:10

A 15thC hotel in Ghent because everything was too old. It was amazing BTW all the furniture was antique and there was a full suit of armour in the breakfast room.

Too many to mention complaining of foreign food and not enough British guests in Spain. Others complaining of the distance to other places.

Biggles27 · 17/01/2025 12:38

My fave was at Disney when my husband’s friend’s wife complained to staff that the sausages had too much meat in them!!!!!
