The UK nor any other Western country can compete on housing or tax in Dubai, its all heavily subsidised with oil revenues, US/Europe cannot reduce taxation to 0%, so whatever we did, the wealthy will look at move but i doubt few will be seeking to become UAE citizens.

Is it a place you want to make your forever home? Are 45'C plus summer temps attractive? and they will only increase.... its hard to even walk outside in those.

Whilst we lost net 10k millionaires last year with around 126k relocating, an approx 116k new millionaires did make the UK their home... & it also depends on how much tax we have lost doesn't it?

Apparently it's the 'cultural desert' aspect which makes people return - eg one man was saying he could easily afford to fly back for Silverstone meeting but it was a big hassle compared with living in London/Home counties

Other cultural activities similarly effected

Piggywaspushed · 19/01/2025 08:55

I know quite a lot of people who have moved to Aus/NZ. All but one family returned. The heat and the feeling of isolation were too much.

Some people. You seem to have this idea that all people covert money above all else. This is a fallacy. Some people chase the almighty dollar, some may move because they are desperate. Most people just want to make their lives, and the lives of those in their communities better.

This. Most people just want secure housing and to be comfortable enough to not worry about the washing machine breaking down or paying the gas bill.

We emigrated to NZ in my teens: my dad could get a promotion more quickly, the oil crisis was happening and as former South Africans, my parents were attracted to the idea of an "outdoors" lifestyle for my brother and me.

We came back 2 years later. Hmm

Dad even had to pay back some money to the hospital as they had paid our removal costs and he was supposed to stay a minimum of 3 years. But they came back when they did for the sake of my education as even coming back "early", we arrived only 6 months before my "O" grades, so I had to work really hard to catch up Shock

If they'd gone to NZ directly from SA, they'd probably have settled but having got used to the UK, they found NZ (especially small town NZ - we went to New Plymouth) too parochial and insular. For them, the last straw was when a general election was fought and won on the basis that the rugby team would be able to tour South Africa with the government's blessing Hmm.

I had sulked for a year when we went as at 13, I hadn't wanted to leave my school friends. I sulked for another year (and was better at it Wink) when we came back as I didn't want to leave my school friends ..... Confused

However, I did come (took a few years) to understand and agree with my parents' reasoning.

So effectively, I have emigrated 3 times in my life time Grin

Well you cannot get secure housing in London anymore unless you aim really high on your career and figure out how to get a deposit together by eg going to tax haven for a few years. It is a fact of life for many who do not have the bank of mum and dad. If there are no similar job opportunities elsewhere, then that is the choice my children will have to make.

And what is your suggested solution to this? Letting very wealthy people off the hook on paying taxes isn't going to change it. And once again I point out to you that there are very many people in London on low wages who face exactly those problems - do they not matter?

Araminta1003 · 19/01/2025 09:30

@Alexandra2001 - I think PAYE tax revenues are still going up. Combination of fiscal drag and inflation. Far more people will be paying the 40% tax.

Araminta1003 · 19/01/2025 09:32

@pointythings - letting very wealth people who may or may not bring business “off the hook” - are you referring to the non dom tax regime and proposed changes? Are are you referring to high earners 250k above who do not all have asset wealth.
This country is not differentiating properly between the asset wealthy and the high income generating lot. It is a simple observation.

How much longer is this thread going to be the Araminta Show? I keep coming back in the hope it’s finished but still it continues.

DuncinToffee · 19/01/2025 09:36

Me too, and I still haven't got a clue what point she is trying to make beyond appease the rich Confused

Change the topic than @blossomtoes. I do not even know what the “rich” are?

Thank you - have been doing the same

Presumably all the innumerable 'education tax' threads have all died a death so needs a new audience to bore

TikTok has gone black in the US putting all their faith into the orange one

Apart from the obvious lack of freedom issues I wish TikTok was banned worldwide. Even my teens call it brainrot!

Alexandra2001 · 19/01/2025 09:50

...and in 2022, the Home Office refused to publish a report into Police prioritising drivers, burglaries and street robberies over and above "Grooming gangs"

So much for Philp claiming the Tories did all they could to highlight CSA.

But i doubt very much the 'Express or 'Mail will report this....

Araminta1003 · 19/01/2025 09:51

If TikTok were banned long term, it would massively benefit Instagram (and therefore, Meta and Zuckerberg).

Of course they won’t. In fact nor will most of the mainstream press or broadcast media. I’m beginning to give up hope of seeing any media coverage that even attempts to be unbiased.

Araminta1003 · 19/01/2025 10:00

What is the solution to grooming gangs? Integrate Pakistani communities more and encourage whistleblowing and change of attitudes? Limit immigration? Prosecute properly? Limit local political infiltration and cover ups? Safeguard vulnerable children more?

Araminta1003 · 19/01/2025 10:04

I am in London. We have massive issues of vulnerable boys and now increasingly girls too, being groomed into county line gangs left right and centre. It’s completely obvious all around and nobody is doing anything much about it. Just like they did nothing about vape shops opening to left right and centre from 2019 onwards.

Priti Patel trying hard not to say they indeed had no plan (BBC LK)

“Your leader Kemi Badenoch said this week there was no plan for how to make Brexit work. You were one of the leading advocates for vote leave. Do you think you should apologise?”

So Kemi’s right there was no plan but she’s wrong because there were lots of plans? Schroeder’s Brexit plan? Make it make sense.

Elodie09 · 19/01/2025 10:21

Everyone needs to pay some taxes and why we have accepted the tax avoidance ruses (especially from those who have wayyyy more and could still have a great life without much financial stress) for so long, is beyond me.
@Araminta1003 Not everyone lives in London .

I agree with that - we absolutely should get better at taxing wealth. That doesn't mean we shouldn't look at better taxing income. There comes a point where what someone earns cannot possibly be a reflection of their talents, because when you earn in a year what most people would spend in an ordinary lifetime, we are into the realm of madness.

Araminta1003 · 19/01/2025 10:31

I doubt any of the hard core Brexiteers will ever apologise because plenty plan to jump to Reform, for self interest, should the need arise closer to the next election? And Reform intends to get us out of being subject to the jurisdiction of the European Court of Human Rights and “reforming” the current Human Rights Act.
