Herpes Medication found in my husbands bag

countrysidefields · 13/01/2025 16:10

I have just found empty packets of tablets from an online pharmacy box dated 17th dec 2024 for anciclovir in my husbands laptop bag.
All the empty packets and packing was also in the box, like it was hidden in there.
When I googled that medication it's used for genital herpes. He doesn't and never has had cold sores.
I am obviously thinking the worst seeing how it was hidden away. Please don't judge me, I wasn't actually looking on purposes, I happened to come across it.
Am I right to be assuming the worst?

Is it an anti viral so can be used for many things not just herpes.

Like what lol

Shingles - painful

swordpen · 13/01/2025 16:59

Adding this to my 'reminder not to get married' file. I'm so, so sorry OP. And for him not to even tell you about the diagnosis. Pitiful man indeed.

You can’t, as far as I’m aware, be tested for herpes as standard. It’s usual for people to only discover they have it with an outbreak.

People can also have the virus for years and years and not have an outbreak until they are run down or ill.

Yes this does seem suspect but if your DH is someone who has had an outbreak years after infection, it’s likely he wouldn’t tell you due to shame / suspicion.

I think you should speak to your husband to get the facts before going much further on canvassing for thoughts here because no one knows expect him.

Just ask him. What is the big deal about saying I came across this medication and wondered why you are taking it. This is supposed to be the person you are closest to. No need to make it into such a drama.

Forgive me if you have been told this already but this medication can be used to treat

Cold Sores: Aciclovir can help reduce the severity and duration of cold sores.
Genital Herpes: It is used to treat outbreaks of genital herpes.
Shingles (Herpes Zoster): Aciclovir can help alleviate the pain and speed up the healing of shingles.
Chickenpox: It can be prescribed to treat chickenpox, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems.
Eye Infections: Aciclovir eye ointments or drops can treat herpes simplex virus infections of the eye

In all honesty I can see no reason for not telling you if he has a chickenpox/shingles related issues so it doesn't sound good.

Delicate question but has he been performing in the bedroom with you and has he been using a condom? You can treat yourself all you like if you have herpes but its easily transmittable and to reduce the risk of transmission, it's important to use protection, such as condoms, and to communicate openly with sexual partners about any potential risks. He can give it to you and then you can pass it back to him. If you have any concerns it's a good idea to consult a healthcare professional.

Exactly, if it was something other than an std then he wouldn't be so secretive.
I will look into getting a blood test, just to put my mind at ease.
We havnt had sex for a while now and I won't be having sex anytime soon that's for sure!

Reminder to stay celibate, surely?

You don't get a super drug prescription for this drug an eye infection lol

Shingles - painful

Chicken pox - absolutely should be letting people you touch know about it.

Check on superdrug website - it's herpes treatment

ShelfyElfy25 · 13/01/2025 17:00

45 tablets even at 3 a day seems a long course though, does it not?

PrettyPeanut · 13/01/2025 17:01

Can we stop with the shingles excuse? If he had bloody shingles op would have known about it

Christmassoxs · 13/01/2025 17:02

Figrollshavemylife · 13/01/2025 16:16

Talk to him not us about it

Prattish response, not helpful. OP is asking for advice and needs to tell someone about it and how she's feeling.

It’s fifteen days

ShelfyElfy25 · 13/01/2025 17:02

What sort of packaging is hidden in it - the envelope it was posted out in do you mean? Was it posted to your home address?

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 13/01/2025 17:03

He’s hidden it for a reason

PrettyPeanut · 13/01/2025 17:03

Can any medical professionals tell us when it would be prescribed at this dose?
Men are notorious for not going to the gp added that its an online pharmacy, very.in tune with it being an embarrassing ailment.eg herpes.

Dotto · 13/01/2025 17:05

Possibility that he wasn't examined and was just prescribed them by mistake as he actually had non-herpes wart and he doesn't want to be accused.. But only other explanation I can think of. Unless they're not his.

PeggyMitchellsCameo · 13/01/2025 17:05

You really, really need to ask him and press him for honesty on this one.
It can be a complex illness, GH, in terms of when and how it is transferred. He may have had it years, if he has it, or he may have recently developed it.
I am not sure if Superdrug would give it for a first infection - it is far preferable to be seen and have a culture taken.
It tends to be prescribed when it has been previously diagnosed, and the patient knows an attack is on its way.
For you, you need answers because it can’t be diagnosed simply. You can have a blood test, but most of us carry the herpes virus so on its own it’s not definitive. If you haven’t had sexual contact, then I suggest you absolutely don’t at least until this issue has been clarified.
If you have an attack for the first time, you know about it, so if your DH has been carrying this condition, and it’s been properly diagnosed, and he’s not told you, it is a huge red flag.
Of course, it could have been prescribed for other conditions but hiding medication like this is not good at all.
He must be asked about this, and you really need to know the truth to protect your health.

Snapncrackle · 13/01/2025 17:07

Ok so I went on to my superdrug pharmacy account
I put in male herpes treatment clicked the boxes as if I have it and you have to upload 2 pics of wherever the herpes is

it you don’t want it upload the pictures you can’t get it / won’t continue

This is what it’s says ( copied and pasted )
This service intends to provide treatment for people who suffer from genital herpes, with outbreaks in the genital area only. It is not intended to provide treatment for shingles or herpes outbreaks anywhere else on the body.

They offer different treatment for shingles and cold sores

adviceneeded1990 · 13/01/2025 17:07

I’ve used Superdrug for stuff like this just because getting a GP appointment is next to impossible! It doesn’t look great I agree but it might be an eye condition or viral rash etc.

rainythursdayontheavenue · 13/01/2025 17:07

You must be in shock, OP. I would keep a hat on it until you feel ready to question him about it, don't act in haste then regret it.

They don't prescribe it for eye conditions and viral rashes? It's herpes only

Maddy70 · 13/01/2025 17:08

He may have had it for years... It's embarrassing to tell a partner and the use of aclivor prevents transmission to you

QueenCamilla · 13/01/2025 17:08

PoisedBrickWriter · 13/01/2025 16:49

The first outbreak is from a recent interaction. It doesn't lay dormant the first time. It does however for other outbreaks

Wrong. In fact primary infection is asymptomatic in MOST cases.
Some children contract herpes virus during childbirth from their mothers but majority will have no symptoms until later in life.
Also, by advanced age, most of the adult population (we are talking over 90%) will have HSV 1 antibodies present and will sometimes shed the virus in their saliva and tears (so could potentially infect others) and yet a huge number of those adults will never get an actual cold-sore.

Information is easily available these days, there's no excuse to perpetuate old myths.

SparklyNewMe · 13/01/2025 17:08

Are you sure you do not have it? Could you have had an outbreak years ago, he caught it off you and may be it’s flared up with stress but he is too embarrassed to bring it up?

adviceneeded1990 · 13/01/2025 17:09

PoisedBrickWriter · 13/01/2025 17:07

Someone further up posted a list of what it can be used for and it include those options? If that’s incorrect then sorry.

Rinkytoo · 13/01/2025 17:09

I’m sorry to say, but I think you and we all know OP that this was for genital herpes, there’s no other reason for the secrecy not telling you or for him to order it from an online place rather than your actual GP/pharmacy.
Hopefully you’ll know when you see his face when you confront him about it. Don’t let him gaslight you.
