My money is on Poundstretcher. Went into my local one today. Shelves empty, looking old and dirty and prices aren’t really cheap for a discount retailer…

Yes, there is such a frustrating disparity between H & M stores and their website. I love their Home range, but the Home section in the store is a mess. They never seem to have items in stock,( not just sold out, but many items never seem to be in the store at all) and what they do have is all jumbled up on the shelves like in TK Maax.

I'm amazed at the difference between the stores. The store in the middle of Sheffield is much tidier and less jumble saley than the one in Meadowhall. The one in York is even tidier.

I reccon their food halls keep them going and with an aging population the clothes will probably continue to sell.

Our M&S on the high street was struggling. They relocated to the retail park. They're flying high and have lifted the other businesses.

Maybe it's their 17.7 billion fyr, above Aldi, M&S, Next and many other big names

So does mine, but they take 5 working days to dispense so online is quicker for me.

How on earth can they justify FIVE working days?? That’s appalling!

it's so sad to see shops that were huge in the eighties now barely there. In the eighties the body shops were rammed and everyone went there to buy their gift baskets at xmas. They had ready made ones or you could make up your own. They were way cool back then.

I'm sad the youngsters don't get to enjoy a busy, atmospheric shopping centre at the weekend now. It was literally our social life browsing the records and posters, looking at books, clothes, makeup. The shop's are so dead now it's not enjoyable to go there at all. In fact I find going shopping depressing.

> It was literally our social life [shopping]
Fortunately, people today have real social lives not driven by consumerism

MidnightBloom · 12/01/2025 20:02

Thank you @snowmichael I didn't know that about the cinema.

@LuckysDadsHat for some reason your post gave me Michael Fish vibes.

Ineedaweebutitswarmhere · 12/01/2025 20:02

Next and or M&S. there clothing is shit, overpriced and aging. I am in the age demographic for next and m&s now but I would still rather shop at new look, Zara or H&M.
Next has become a restocked of brands I shopped in my early 20s, and is poor quality compared to something I can buy for half the cost in new look.

All the M&S’s need to just become food places and stock good quality fresh locally sourced food, to keep justifying their prices.

GRCP · 12/01/2025 20:02

Argos
WH Smith by rights but agree it's the service station / post office that propping them up.

CFOfTheHighestOrder · 12/01/2025 20:03

Clark’s - boring bland overpriced shoes and terrible business management

Also Waterstones.

Love their shops, great for browsing and getting a drink in the cafe but when you buy books and then see them much cheaper on Amazon, you feel ripped off!

I recently read somewhere that Waterstones are doing well

Birmingham Waterstones

Waterstones profits soar as post-pandemic shoppers flock to stores

Waterstones recorded an increase in full-year profits as sales soared post-pandemic.

@snowmichael buying a washing up bowl from Amazon - fine if you can't get to any shops. But it's likely to be from exactly the same factory as ones in shops like B+M so there isn't really any difference.
I was curious from people like @CosySwan buys them?
If you are someone that can easily get to a regular ordinary high st/shopping centre - where do you buy boring everyday things like a washing up bowl from?

> there isn't really any difference.

Except the price - up to 50% cheaper at Amazon
As another poster said, more fool you if you want to pay more

Flossflower · 12/01/2025 20:04

Jojomamanbebe why would you spend money there when it is all on vinted.

Needmorelego · 12/01/2025 20:05

@CandidHedgehog Dunelm is one of those shops that certain people on this website snobs would say only sells "cheap tat".
(I like Dunelm btw).
@TiredEyesToday when was the last time you went in HMV? They have completely changed over the last couple of years selling a much larger variety of goods.
They still sell CDs and DVDs but now have huge a vinyl selection (always full with customers flicking through the selection whenever I go in) and a lot of "pop culture" products.
They sensibly changed what they focus on and as far as I know doing reasonably ok now.
They even re opened the "flagship" Oxford St branch.

RampantIvy · 12/01/2025 20:05

Hard disagree there. IMO M and S have upped their game recently and have improved their offerings.

I like Dunelms as well @Needmorelego

Do they? I thought the death knell of a lot of these shops is online shopping and fast fashion. Doesn’t seem like consumerism
is going anywhere

Midlifecrisisxamillion · 12/01/2025 17:51

Is it? I'm surprised. Crazy overpriced.

Coop put on a million members last year. Own brand very cheap and good special offers

Is it? I'm surprised. Crazy overpriced.

In a lot of smaller villages and more rural areas, the co-op is often the only supermarket available to local shoppers. At least in Scotland!

Needmorelego · 12/01/2025 20:07

@snowmichael exactly that's my point. Certain people wouldn't dream of stepping foot into somewhere like B+M because it's "all cheap plastic tat" but then purchase an item from Amazon which is exactly the same as one you could get in B+M 😂
(not saying that's you specifically)

snowmichael · 12/01/2025 20:08

dynamiccactus · 12/01/2025 19:59

But loads of people still listen to CDs and more to the point, vinyl!

Which most buy from Amazon et al

Midlifecrisisxamillion · 12/01/2025 20:09

RampantIvy · 12/01/2025 19:55

I think a lot of posters are just naming shops they dislike and don't care if people lose their jobs.

I hate loads of these shops because a lot of them are rubbish but I still care if people lose their jobs. I've been there myself and know how it feels.

Hedgerowdragon · 12/01/2025 20:09

Our HMV is really into selling Pop Vinyls and TShirts. So music is secondary, but vinyls are popular.
Argos is growing now in Sainsburys. I don’t have Amazon prime and like to buy on day when I want, rather than wait in for delivery (as they ignore safe place and just leave on door step and I live on a main road).
I don’t want to see any high street shops close.

Jaeger is in our local M&S.

Yes, same here, but not own shop anymore.

But half the price
Amazon is the place to get your 'cheap plastic tat'

Needmorelego · 12/01/2025 20:11

@RampantIvy there are TWO new Waterstones just opened in South London.
Streatham and Lewisham 🙂
