What retailer do you think will go bust next?

My money is on Poundstretcher. Went into my local one today. Shelves empty, looking old and dirty and prices aren’t really cheap for a discount retailer…

Hotel Chocolat have closed their ROI branches.
I heard it’s the same in Scotland, is that right?

There's still a HC in the Scottish city near me.

I used to think Next because their clothes were just so awful season after season but in the past year or two things seem to have picked up, clothes are better, less fussiness and they added in Bath & Body Works which is a hugely popular brand where I live, I’m quite impressed, they must have a brilliant marketing team.

I think Hotel Chocolat are starting to decline, the prices have increased massively but the chocolates are not nearly as nice as they were. Won’t be the next one to go but they’re on their way imvho.

Edited

Really they're coming to our town in the spring

why are people hoping for shops to close, you don't have to shop there

The problem is, sometimes you do
And what you want is a local shop, with reasonable prices and good customer service
What you get is CoOp or WHSmith

??? I am a size 8 and shop there.

Me too!

GoldenGateFridge · 12/01/2025 19:52

Spar is popular in Nigeria. Random fact of the day 😁

I think it was a joke

Our Boots has pivoted to have a stronger focus on makeup and less on babies and holiday stuff. I'm not convinced it's the right direction. It's not a premium environment and their staff are neither helpful nor knowledgeable. Personally, if I need advice, I'd still go to JL and if I know what I want, I'll buy online for convenience.

I'm sure mounjaro will prop them up though.

Agree about the change in fashions as mentioned above.
When I start seeing things that are in my wardrobe, lining the charity shop rails… I know it’s time to move them on!

Problem is that a lot of them are fair superior quality clothes (hence popularity of Vinted). Plus, I’m older & fatter, too. So, I love my clothes but they no longer serve me. It’s a tough one.

> When I start seeing things that are in my wardrobe, lining the charity shop rails… I know it’s time to move them on!

You say they are well made and comfortable ... but you won't wear them any more?

What a terrible indictment of the consumer mentality

RedRiverShore5 · 12/01/2025 19:54

I wish Hotel Chocolat would come to our retail park, I buy a lot of their drinking chocolate and some chocolates and the postage isn't free which curtails my purchases

I can't see it being WH Smith as they often the only place to buy snacks, magazines etc in train stations and smaller airports. They are ridiculously overpriced - I'm not a fan at all.

I'm amazed Boots keeps going but I'm guessing it's only because of the pharmacy side as the shelves in the one near me are nearly always low and many empty. Mine also had very dim lighting and is poorly staffed.

I wonder about the CO OP's future.

I used to always wonder how Boots kept afloat until I did a project in a care home. The amount of unnecessary stuff that is ordered “on prescription” (I’m in Scotland so free) then wasted must runs into £millions every month. A very quick exam is paracetamol- when prescribed, Boots send the most expensive caplets so £1.99 compared with 49p in Tesco. Likewise high protein drinks - so much gets ordered but the residents rarely get through them but because they’re prescribed, they can’t be given to anyone else, so they just get wasted. Ditto simple emolients, high fluoride toothpaste, incontinence pads etc.

I’m convinced this sort of prescribing is keeping Boots afloat!

RampantIvy · 12/01/2025 19:55

I think a lot of posters are just naming shops they dislike and don't care if people lose their jobs.

Solaire18381 · 12/01/2025 19:56

River Island.

I've never found anything worthwhile in there and now my teen never finds anything in there.

SunnySailor · 12/01/2025 19:56

If my local high street is anything to go by I think Superdry, Rymans, Peacocks, and White Stuff.

Frasers always seems empty now, many of the concessions within it have gone. Shame, it used to be a lovely store when it was House of Fraser but now it seems to be full of Sports Direct stuff.

Asda.

Absolute shitshow inside every Asda I've been in for the last couple of years.

Random gaps in the stock, terrible choice of products, dimly lit...just feels like total chaos and on the edge of folding.

10 years ago I used to go to "the big Asda" every few months when I wanted to stock up and get a few treats. Last few times I've been, they haven't had the most basic things (like tinned tomatoes once, FFS) and the treats have been non existent. Despite the store itself being enormous, it's sparsely stocked and barely lit well enough to see anything!

Our big Asda had one checkout out of twenty open on Friday. It was chaos apparently.

That’s horrendous. How do you manage? It’s awful you’re in this position.

Don't know about other suppliers but I refused to sign their 150 day contract, compromised on 60 days, and fined them £70 or £100 plus interest almost every month until the end of the contract, then ditched them

HelloNorthernStar · 12/01/2025 19:56

Bodyshop. They were struggling last year. Nice products but overpriced in my opinion.

LindtCurves · 12/01/2025 19:57

ASOS.

SnappyGreyLemur · 12/01/2025 19:57

Fatface have had sales every couple of months for the last ten years or so. I don’t think the quality is as good as it was.

I like White Stuff jeans but that’s about all I buy now.

I found the Body Shop sale very disappointing this year, I usually stock up on skincare but they didn’t have any multi buys.

I can’t understand how H&M shops stay open - there are 2 near me and both are massive & filled with shapeless creased beige polyester. The kids section is always a mess and they never have the sizes I need, despite having a fabulous range of kids clothes on their website.

Yes, there is such a frustrating disparity between H & M stores and their website. I love their Home range, but the Home section in the store is a mess. They never seem to have items in stock,( not just sold out, but many items never seem to be in the store at all) and what they do have is all jumbled up on the shelves like in TK Maax.

I’m always amazed HMV keep going, given the shift to digital media consumption….

But loads of people still listen to CDs and more to the point, vinyl!

I stopped shopping there when they went to store credit for refunds. I know that legally they don’t have to offer anything unless the product is defective but there is a John Lewis just up the road (walking distance) and multiple department stores 10 minutes away by train, all of which offer returns to your method of payment. I’ll shop there, thanks.

Solaire18381 · 12/01/2025 20:00

Also Waterstones.

Love their shops, great for browsing and getting a drink in the cafe but when you buy books and then see them much cheaper on Amazon, you feel ripped off!

Wintersgirl · 12/01/2025 20:00

Not Boots I don't think, they've tapped in to the Sephora/Space NK market which is very popular on SM with youngsters, I mean they always sold skincare but now they're selling the unknown brands that trend on SM, there's a huge flagship store a few miles from me and it's always busy.
