Does anyone cover their car (icy nights)

People talk of scraping and deicing the car on a cold morning but does anyone cover their car windscreen with a sheet or blanket.

We do
I suppose it depends on your parking situation?
Do people still cover their windscreens?👀

My new car has a heated windscreen, saves so much time. I also don't use my car every day, so I'd have to make a special effort to go outside and put a blanket over it.

pljlse · 12/01/2025 09:31

I tend to run the engine (not worried about theft where we are) and the car is warm for when I get in. But otherwise, just use some de-icer surely?

pljlse · 12/01/2025 09:33

I have a heated windscreen also but it is not as quick as de-icer.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 12/01/2025 09:33

I have a windscreen cover, which has little gloves for the wing mirrors. It's a plug in hybrid, if it's plugged in, I have an app to warm it up.

pljlse · 12/01/2025 09:33

Ooh I can't do it manually though, is it a Ford @Scrowy?

pljlse · 12/01/2025 09:33

*remotely

itsgettingweird · 12/01/2025 09:34

I cover my front windscreen with a plastic ice cover.

Back heats quickly and use de-icer spray on sides and wing mirrors.

Takes me about 2 minutes which is more than enough time because I leave home at 4.30am 😂

fanaticalfairy · 12/01/2025 09:38

What do you do with the blanket/cover in the morning? Like where does it go to dry?

This.
Never leave your car unattended .

Depends where you live.

I left the driver door open overnight.... Came to back freezing car in the morning LOL

I've left it unlocked by accident with a laptop in full view... Charlie next door knocked to let me know.

Half a dozen cars are left running idle these past few mornings.

They’d soon bring it back, it’s a banger!

They'd be welcome to mine. The insurance would only pay a few £100 no doubt anyway.

NewYearNewName2025 · 12/01/2025 09:42

I got one of those (probably regifted!) plastic ice covers in a work secret santa! Was not impressed, rolled my eyes inwardly and smiled through gritted teeth. BUT it's been an absolute lifesaver on frosty mornings. Just spritz the wing mirrors, side and back windows and I'm off!
I started a trend round here too as I counted quite a few screen covers on my road this week (we're all on street parking).

Ooh, I'm a 4.30am leaver too and do exactly the same as you!

BruisedNeckMeat · 12/01/2025 09:45

I have a Tesla which means one click on the app and the car heats up and defrosts ready for it to be toasty when I get in.

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 12/01/2025 09:46

My brother can do the same as @Scrowy

He has an electric BMW SUV (no idea of the model) but I'm sooo jealous!

NewYearNewName2025 · 12/01/2025 09:46

@fanaticalfairy I leave mine to melt off on top of our paper bin. It hasn't been nicked yet!

We just drop ours on a chair in the dining room - because it's thin, nylon-y plastic, it dries really quickly.

Rummly · 12/01/2025 09:50

Jug of warm water works fine for me. 👍

GRCP · 12/01/2025 09:50

Yes, I just chuck an old picnic blanket over the windscreen when I park in the evening. Game changer.

frockandcrocs · 12/01/2025 09:52

No, I usually make a flask of tea and sit in it for a few mins while it warms up, the ice just melts away then.

My problem is mor e the car freezing shut 😂 I've taken to spraying the internal mechanism with de-icer before I leave it in an evening.

Hokem · 12/01/2025 09:52

My car (Renault Zoe) has a button on the remote for defrosting and you can go set it in a timer as well. Which is a good job as the heating is terrible (no engine) so it needs a while to defrost.

soupfiend · 12/01/2025 09:53

I didnt it once with a blanket and the thing was stuck fast with ice and I had to try to rip it off, bits of fluff stuck all over the window and wipers.

Never tried again, didnt work

I just leave it running and scrape it.

HoraceCope · 12/01/2025 09:53

yes
yesterday though i hadnt and tried a bag full of warm water, which was good

agree that the inside is a big issue

pljlse · 12/01/2025 09:53

I remember the look of horror on my parents' faces when I proudly walked into our kitchen with an empty kettle having just poured the boiling contents all over my new car's windscreen 😂

gingercat02 · 12/01/2025 09:53

My EV is currently defrosting itself, but I haven't had a car for years that doesn't have front and rear defrosting "wires"

HoraceCope · 12/01/2025 09:54

and i pour warm water on the water jets as they freeze up sometimes
