Does anyone cover their car (icy nights)

People talk of scraping and deicing the car on a cold morning but does anyone cover their car windscreen with a sheet or blanket.

We do
I suppose it depends on your parking situation?
Do people still cover their windscreens?👀

i dry the sheet in the downstairs loo

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 12/01/2025 09:55

I left my car last night parked outside my work (supermarket) with a towel over the windscreen so that I could get in and drive away after my shift finished late at night. Some bastards had thought it was funny to take the towel off and throw it into a nearby bin. So my car was frozen after all.

Ha ha. I laughed until I stopped.

Jug of warm water works fine for me

I remember the look of horror on my parents' faces when I proudly walked into our kitchen with an empty kettle having just poured the boiling contents all over my new car's windscreen 😂

Oops! The water shouldn’t be too hot - the temperature change will crack the glass.

But warm tap water is fine.

I once used a cover but it was more trouble than it was worth. Stuck to the glass and metal.

I used to - little mittens on the wing-mirrors and a big cover on the windscreen because it's so much easier (especially as I'm short)

Now, I don't have to, because I've got a hybrid I can time-table to warm itself up ready for when we leave. It's wonderful.

Chasingsquirrels · 12/01/2025 09:57

Big sheets of silver foil insulated bubble wrap.

But, as I keep my car in the garage I've donated them to 18yo ds - who does use them.

ChrisPriss · 12/01/2025 10:04

My car windscreens freeze inside as well as outside ☹️

SabreIsMyFave · 12/01/2025 10:06

We put ours in the garage. 🚗

grimupnorthnot · 12/01/2025 10:10

Pre heat mine from the app. Electric car.

other car is in the garage old school I know

DiscoBeat · 12/01/2025 10:10

No, I just go and turn the car on for 10 mins while I finish getting ready. Nice and toasty and defrosted when I get in!

mine too!

Best thing for de-icing IMO is the gadget we’ve got, bought ages ago - a sort of warmly padded mitten with a handle inside, and a scraper on the end. Does it all v quickly with no cold hands, no chemicals and no electricity or heat
from inside the car.

Simonjt · 12/01/2025 10:14

No, I have an engine warmer, so when we start the car we get warm air almost immediately, we can also remote start the heating etc as well, so by the time I need to leave its defrosted.

Wow, @Scrowy, what kind of car do you have?

Most electric and some hybrid cars let you do it.

ElderLemon · 12/01/2025 11:20

I'm surprised to hear people talk about scraping. I just empty a kettle or two of water over it, it's very quick. Not boiling water!

It's a Volvo XC90

My last car I used to, made so much difference. My new one is set to defrost itself in time for me to leave.

I’m always surprised at the number of people who don’t cover but spend time scraping. I get irrationally annoyed at the noise of engines idling in the morning.

Same here.

I also still see people who decide to risk their windscreen by pouring boiling water over it.

Not to mention that it then leaves a puddle which will freeze and be a hazard.

Chasingsquirrels · 12/01/2025 12:39

DS pours tepid water on his if he hasn't put the covers on.
A big watering can is useful for this as you can better direct the flow.
Our drive is gravelled though, so the water just soaks away and doesn't cause an ice patch on the ground.

mine too!

Mine too. I've got an old convertible. It gets really bad in there when the weather is like this.

daffodilandtulip · 12/01/2025 13:12

I did when I worked shifts but don't use the car so much now. No one else in the street does. They much prefer to provide a succession of idling engines from 4am.

Sheknowsaboutme · 12/01/2025 13:14

No never. I just leave the engine running.

It's been so cold here that between pouring the water and replacing the kettle, the screen has refrozen! It's also been freezing as I drive along, giving me a lovely film of ice which I think have to stop and remove.

PiggyPigalle · 12/01/2025 14:00

I couldn't understand why the de-icer hadn't cleared the windscreen. The thick ice was on the inside!

Nourishinghandcream · 12/01/2025 14:17

I use a windscreen cover, don't know why people don't?

OH has had a heated windscreen on his vehicle for the past 20+yrs, works great.

DaisyStarburst · 12/01/2025 14:21

I was getting ice on the inside too but bought some microwaveable dehumidifiers to put on the dashboard and haven't had any since. Have a foil cover that covers the mirrors too as well.
