Tracksuits on men (other than for sport)

DrFosterWentToGloucester23 · 11/01/2025 16:16

Just sat at the local softplay and noticed nearly all men under 40 are wearing a complete tracksuit (as in joggers and a hoodie that are clearly a set)

I’m not a fan of the look myself. Just wondered what others thought.

Men wearing a matching tracksuit look like big babies.

SnowballAndTrifle · 11/01/2025 23:07

DH put on a pair of tracksuit bottoms the other day to go sledging with the kids. I didn't know he owned them but apparently his brother bought the wrong size and forgot to return them so gave them to DH.
I have to say he looked deeply unattractive in them and I will probably engineer a swift exit to the Charity shop.
I find tracksuits and pyjamas are not a good look on men.

Wear some jeans already. They have a bit of stretch built in. A self respecting man shouldnt be wearing a baby grow / romper suit in pubic.

Brilliant typo there Grin

You wouldn't like DH nightshirts then 😁

Soft play fine. Out on a date not fine. I have a lovely colleague who is often posting photos of her and her boyfriend on a date - she will look gorgeous, heels, dresses etc and he will be in a tracksuit.

@justasking111
Eww no, is he Scrooge?

justasking111 · 11/01/2025 23:36

Haha no. Bought for him one Christmas. Like a long teeshirt. He wears them in weather like this

"Mens Nightshirts | Extra Long | 2XL To 8XL | Big Tee" https://www.bigteeshirt.co.uk/style/All-Sizes/nightshirts

GiddyRobin · 11/01/2025 23:53

I don't personally like them. So many of them (especially the grey ones!) seem to show off everything and I'm not a fan of the look. I can see why they're worn though, and I can hardly talk because I love leggings! Not the sport ones and I don't wear them as trousers, but they're comfy. I hate wearing jeans. 🤷‍♀️ No issue with men in pj's either. It's just the tracksuits I don't like.

dreamingofpalms · 12/01/2025 07:05

I think it depends on the cut and style. Baggy tracky bottoms are not a good look on anyone

But they're not chavvy if they're a fairly slim loose cut with nice clean trainers. On a nice body if course 😆. I think it's a really good look. But young people pull it off better than older folk

so it’s a dress then?

@AllProperTeaIsTheft yes they can look smart (random pic from Google)

That is neither a tracksuit nor looks smart!

I think slim fit ones with gleaming white trainers looks even more chavvy/deano/whatever word people use now

Yes. I notice this a lot too. I think this is definitely a young trend (hopefully?!). As a middle aged woman, I’d hate to get dressed up for a date with a similar aged man and find him dressed like this:

I think tracksuits look awful on anybody, not just men, outside the house and not exercising. I really do hate this whole athleisure thing, unless people are actually exercising or just chilling at home.

justasking111 · 12/01/2025 09:09

Sherararara · 12/01/2025 07:32

so it’s a dress then?

If you think so. Many male cultures wear dresses in that case.

I wouldn’t even have given this a second’s consideration. I’m in my 50s and think that men (or women) wearing tracksuits is completely normal. They are useful for those doing sport, practical for those with limited mobility, and snuggly in cold weather. And it is nice to see dads taking an active involvement with their children, and getting together with their mates.

SevenWeeks · 12/01/2025 09:37

I don't like any sportswear worn by people when they're not engaged in sport - that includes trainers as everyday footwear. However, that's just a personal view - like preferring a green car to a red car - it's not my pronouncement that no one should ever dress like that. I wouldn't try to stop my DH dressing like that if he'd a mind to.

dreamingofpalms · 12/01/2025 13:04

@RunSlowTalkFast I would introduce you to my Insurance Director friend and the solicitor who recently arranged a Power of attorney for me ... who are both mid thirties sporting that look, here in middle class Surrey, and they both look great! It's an age thing. Doesn't work on the older guys, though. They are most definitely not chavvy.

I don't care how much money someone earns, or what they do. A tracksuit is for exercising in. They just make me think the person can't make an effort. Even the multiple PTs I know wear jeans out and about.

Shubbypubby · 12/01/2025 14:48

@AllProperTeaIsTheft yes it's hypocritical but I'm sick to the back teeth of the middle classes of MN pillorying those they deem less worthy than they are and the sycophantic worship of "old money". It's nauseating.

pljlse · 12/01/2025 15:01

I'm working class and hate track suits 🤷‍♀️

At the risk of lowering the tone of the thread, I don’t like seeing their man-bits flapping around unrestrained 😳

I'm convinced that why some men like wearing tracksuits as trousers. It's like waving two fingers at us as we have to see their bits flopping about.

Should they wear ballet tights instead? You can certain see the outlines of bits when male dancers are dressed for ballet! 😄
