Tracksuits on men (other than for sport)

Just sat at the local softplay and noticed nearly all men under 40 are wearing a complete tracksuit (as in joggers and a hoodie that are clearly a set)

I’m not a fan of the look myself. Just wondered what others thought.

That does not look smart to me. It looks weird to be honest, the trousers are too tight at the ankle for a suit-type thing.

Personally I think they indicate what would once have been called "common" people, not meaning that in a judgy way I don't know how else to say it, people like Joe Swash. It's a particular look for a particular group of people. Like deck shoes and red cords/chinos are for a different group of people.

I don't like it as a look but obviously lots do.

You say this, but increasingly I’ve seen middle class professionals on the school run wearing them! I can think of 2 posh dads that work in finance who I see regularly in them.

But the idea of it only being for a certain "class" of people is ridiculous, for example this is an F1 driver who earns $50 million a year in one on his private jet (yes it's knitted, but still a tracksuit!)

It's kind of insane to say that only certain classes of people can wear them

I hate this look. What happened to jeans for men?!

For reasons I'm not about to go into, tracksuits on men just give off paedophilia vibes to me.

The elasticated waist is just too easy to whip down and whip it out.

I don't care how comfortable or practical they are or even how fashionable they are, I see them and think Jimmy Savile.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 11/01/2025 17:59

IMO they often look sloppy and scruffy. I know others will disagree, but then some people think it’s OK for parents still in their pyjamas to take their kids to school.

Tbh I'm no more of a fan of this look on private-jet guy than I would be on anyone else.

But I'm just pointing out that it's not about 'class' at all - if the highest earners in the world wear them, it just says a lot about your biases

Lazery · 11/01/2025 18:06

I was walking behind a man with an all red one, he had the hood up. I thought I was following Po.

The pastel pink, baby blue and light green ones make me feel a bitEnvy

That highest earner isn't wearing a normal tracksuit though. If you have to pick out unusual examples of not-really-a-proper-tracksuit tracksuits to make the point (like the knitted one and the one with a jacket collar posted upthread), it does kind of imply that everyone's got a point about the normal ones!

No, it's showing you that most people wear them.

But I guess these multimillionaires (even people like Lewis Hamilton wear them!) have no class, and the women judging others for their looks at soft play do!

Spicykitten · 11/01/2025 18:12

I have this tracksuit. I love it.

After reading this thread, I still love it. I don’t care that it apparently makes me look like a giant toddler. It’s perfect to throw on after swimming.

Chavvy, worn by a men with BMWs on Finance and hand tattoos.

French Bulldog.

Live laugh love.

JeremiahBullfrog · 11/01/2025 18:21

I am opposed to anyone wearing sports clothes for anything other than strenuous physical activity - but I know this is an extreme position!

(In this country, there are other countries where just walking around in tracksuit would definitely be a bit odd.)

CharliesAngels81 · 11/01/2025 18:46

In court this week and seen many people wearing tracksuits - crazy man standards have fallen and surely isn't a good look if you've done something wrong

Money and class are different things.

Class has nothing to do with money. Money can't buy class. Just because the likes of Hamilton and Beckham have millions doesn't automatically make them upper class or even middle class.

lostinthememory · 11/01/2025 18:54

But those who you're judging definitely have more class than you.

Shubbypubby · 11/01/2025 20:10

MN hates anything deemed to be working class (which is what they mean when they say "chavvy") and the posters on this thread thinking tracksuits and leggings are common/slobby because they are worn by working class people.

There is also this weird "money can't buy class" notion that means they deem people who are "old money" to be superior people to those from poorer backgrounds who have worked their way up.

What is "having class"? Being born into an upper or middle class family? That doesn't automatically make you a better person. I'd rather chew off my arm than someone mistake me for a member of the middle classes.

justasking111 · 11/01/2025 20:50

I hated getting the hoodies completely dry in the winter the seams were so thick. Ditto with the waist bottoms. The tumble drier didn't like some of the logos.

Pedallleur · 11/01/2025 21:35

It's sports fashion in the same way gym outfits/leggings have become the norm for many women. Training shoes were many years ago just used for sport now it's acceptable footwear for nearly every occasion. Don't like the tracksuit look myself but it works for others rich or poor.

Nextyearhopes · 11/01/2025 21:36

Hate it. Chavvy.
Don’t like women in leggings neither unless with long boots.

justasking111 · 11/01/2025 22:01

I recall my sons girlfriend wearing a lot of Juicy Couture when we first met her. I thought that they were just colourful tracksuits.

You can be of that group and have lots of money. I just don't know how to describe that particular background, it's different to working class, although it is working class, it's a particular set of perfectly nice people. Maybe there isn't a word for it. Lots of footballers are it, for example, and they are loaded.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 11/01/2025 22:29

The irony! You're accusing people of saying that being middle class makes you a better person (which I don't think anyone said), but you happily admit you think that middle class people are so awful that you'd be horrified to be mistaken for one?

scalt · 11/01/2025 22:57

I love my trackies. I complete the look with trainers without socks; judge away!
