Could Trump take Greenland by force?

Greenkindness · 07/01/2025 22:20

I would like to think he couldn’t, but could he? Would he basically invade it if he couldn’t buy it? Would the UK defend it as part of NATO?

Could he also take the Panama Canal?

I’m hoping it’s all distraction politics but I also think Trump and his cronies are stupid and dangerous people.

Another statue extolling imperialism and the evisceration of a people that stood outside the Capitol building for over a century;

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TheRescue(sculpture)

Commissioned by the white settler government, its sculpture wrote it is "to convey the idea of the triumph of the whites over the savage tribes".

2 minds.

Its certainaly possible given the fire power and the economic power of the US to make them an offer that looks great but doesn't deliver. If he goes for it, it will be $$$ that gets it not guns.

However, he tried to overturn the election last time and it didn't work, so I am not conivinced he has the comptency to actually make anything happen in real life that isn't just for show.

"In 1928, Hitler remarked, approvingly, that white settlers in America had “gunned down the millions of redskins to a few hundred thousand.” When he spoke of Lebensraum, the German drive for “living space” in Eastern Europe, he often had America in mind."

https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2018/04/30/how-american-racism-influenced-hitler

This lebensraum (Nazi move east) is the ancestor of "Manifest destiny" (the white settlers move West, who via state sanctioned policies murdered and ethnically cleansed the Native people from their land.

theodore roosevelt:

"I don't go so far as to think that the only good Indians are dead Indians, but I believe nine out of ten are, and I shouldn't like to inquire too closely into the case of the tenth"

L Frank Baum (he who wrote wizard of Oz):

"The Pioneer has before declared that our only safety depends upon the total extermination of the Indians. Having wronged them for centuries, we had better, in order to protect our civilization, follow it up by one more wrong and wipe these untamed and untamable creatures from the face of the earth."

This lebensraum (Nazi move east) is the ancestor of "Manifest destiny" (the white settlers move West

Descendant of, not ancestor. The white invasion of America predates the Third Reich.

And as for Elon musk, an Afrikaner, an entity whose apartheid policies were directly inspired by the white settler entity america the global leader in race law (racial segregation, interracial marriage illegal (anti-miscegenation), white only citizenship, white only vote, white only immigration (until the 1965 act), anti-literacy law (blacks banned from learning for fear of them becoming educated and revolting), it's no bleedin wonder he has a kinship with them.

abraham lincoln in 1858;

"I am not, nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people. I as much as any man am in favor of the superior position assigned to the white race."

Abraham Lincoln (1989). Speeches and Writings 1832–1858: Speeches, Letters, and Miscellaneous Writings : the Lincoln-Douglas Debates. Vol. 1. Library of America. page. 638.

Lincoln, the fourth member of the white supremacist Mt. rushmore (fittingly sculpted by gutzon borglum, a kkk member), the other three I've mentioned: two slave owning racist tyrants (jefferson and washington) and the other in roosevelt who called for the complete evisceration of the Native people.

So I think I've answered the OP's question, could trump (ie. the imperialist white settler entity) take yet another land?... obviously.

In 2019 Trump was so offended by the Danish reaction in this matter that he canceled a state visit a few weeks before it was due to take place.

American citizen here. I can tell you that the majority of Americans would not want military force used. We think the jerk needs to leave other countries alone.

True, but Trump's hardcore base are for anything he wants, no matter how crazy, and they represent about 30% of the electorate.
I feel bad for decent Americans like you that you have to put up with Trumpers in daily life.

I'm still in shock that a majority of Americans are stupid and bigoted enough to elect that mindless freak a second time.

It's horrifying. What was even more bizarre was the number of UK people here on MN who were defending it. I was shocked at how many there were.

Just to show that the imperialist white settler entity america has not completely tried to whitewash its history toward non white peoples, in 2018 Laura Ingalls Wilder (who wrote Little House on the Prairie, an imperialist story about white colonisers), her name was removed from the children's award that had been named after her due to how her book portrayed blacks and Native people.

Association removes Laura Ingalls Wilder's name from award

CHICAGO (AP) — A division of the American Library Association has voted to remove Laura Ingalls Wilder's name from a major children's book award over concerns with how the early-to-mid 20th century author portrayed blacks and Native Americans.

Funny thing is the USA couldn't take Vietnam, couldn't do shit in Afghanistan, have needed us the UK to hold their hands in all their wars; yet people are on Mumsnet thinking they can just take Greenland 🤣🤣🤣

I think you're giving trump & the USA a bit too much credit where it most certainly is not due.

Elon Musk isn't an Afrikaner. I feel obliged to point that out on behalf of all Afrikaners.

According to a song by New Model Army, the UK is.

Have had that going round in my head since the 51st state was mentioned. Went to see them back in the day.

What a shit show this whole fiasco with Trump and Musk is. I do hope somewhere, somehow common sense prevails.

knitnerd90 · 08/01/2025 04:20

The US tried invading Panama in 1989 to remove Noriega and "secure the canal." It wasn't Reagan's finest moment.

Also, I'd caution anyone British against looking down on American history vis-a-vis the Native Americans. All told, the UK has a far worse record, and we were the ones who got the ball rolling in America.

I agree and in England in general. Last time around everyone was reassuringly horrified, this time around people are spouting his rhetoric. But they all seem to have the same script so I think they’re all getting the same social media algorithm.

Yes, my personal favorite wanker bingo card entry is this one:

’But neither candidate was great were they?’

Saying that one of them was a convicted felon and sexual abuser, racist, sexist and separated children from their parents and kept them in cages (some still not reunited) and an endless laundry list of other items doesn’t seem to make much difference. I heard somebody say it’s like being on a plane and being offered the chicken or shit sandwich and asking how the chicken was cooked. I thought that about covered it.

Have you ever been to Greenland? Making it the 52nd state makes far more sense than having it as an offshoot of Denmark. And Trump could make the Greenlanders an offer they couldn’t refuse if he wanted to. The Panama Canal is different. It has been under American control before and could be again if it was strategically necessary.

"an offer they cant refuse" ?

Greenland falls under Denmark that has one of the world's best social services programs - nobody in Greenland is unemployed & living in total poverty

But you think a failed businessman will millions in debt is going to be capable of making any sort of deal that will make them want to become American ?

Ohshutupsimonyoutwat · 08/01/2025 06:14

I'm sorry to tell you that yes, there are unemployed Greenlanders and ones in poverty. The estimated unemployment rate is 9% and the poverty rate is 16%. I wonder how truly accurate the unemployment rate is because there are Greenlanders still practicing many traditional ways of life. Now, Danish welfare keeps them from desperate poverty, and they do have things like free education and health care, but Greenland is not quite what you imagine when you think of Denmark. As well as the ugly history of how Denmark treated the Greenlanders, discrimination in Denmark proper is still a very real issue.

True but will Greenland and it's citzens have better welfare and economy under USA? I very much doubt that.

I recently saw a programme that was talking about why Greenland could be a target for Russia. I wish I could remember what it was, but as well as the geographic location and the natural resources they were saying that it was about the shipping route. With the ice cap melting so fast, the Arctic route will soon make it a much quicker and less expensive route for China’s main shipping route and Russia would therefore benefit from controlling it. Trump may be thinking the same, especially as he has been talking about the Panama Canal as well.

TomPinch · 08/01/2025 07:07

The Russians will not attack Greenland as that would constitute an attack on a NATO state.
