Could Trump take Greenland by force?

Greenkindness · 07/01/2025 22:20

I would like to think he couldn’t, but could he? Would he basically invade it if he couldn’t buy it? Would the UK defend it as part of NATO?

Could he also take the Panama Canal?

I’m hoping it’s all distraction politics but I also think Trump and his cronies are stupid and dangerous people.

Trump ramps up threats to gain control of Greenland and Panama Canal

The president-elect said he would not rule out the use of military force to seize control of the Panama Canal and Greenland.

I think it's going to be the UK once we're liberated. 😁

Fuck me, I cannot think of anything worse!!

Hey, I am just trying to make the world bigly greener. So if Greenland belongs to the US that must make us greener. Yes? I think so.
After renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America (sounds beautiful, doesn't it). I'm going to rename Washing-ton to Trump-ton.

Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew…

Hedgerowdragon · 07/01/2025 23:15

I’m impressed he can find Greenland 🇬🇱 on a map.

@Greenkindness

No country has the power to take the US on and NATO is based on the US military.

Israel have quite happily been bombing the ME and committing atrocities with US backing and no one's doing anything.

The US don't care about international law.

He could take it if he wanted to. I doubt he does. He doesn't even know where it is on a map and has no genuine interest in it. Greenland and Panama are just his latest childish obsessions, which are caused by the woeful combination of dementia and narcissistic personality disorder. A couple of weeks ago it was Canada he was threatening. He'll probably move onto threatening someplace else before too long. Fucking kookass fascist freak.

He still made a dig at Canada, today.

He's more unhinged than the end of a Homebase closing down sale.

The problem is I suspect this is not an idea he's thought up entirely by himself.

Genuinely, could the US just take it if they couldn’t buy it and would it lead to military action? With NATO stepping in? Nothing I’ve seen so far indicates Trump cares about legalities.

Well he has said he can’t rule out military or economic force…

I genuinely am trying to imagine how this could all play out. He sent Don Jr to Greenland today.

Don Jr. is well known to be a foreign affairs expert.🙄
The dim son probably went to Green Bay by mistake. He'll call Trump from a Packers game to let him know Greenland has an awesome football team.

knitnerd90 · 07/01/2025 23:31

He's full of it. The US already does have a base in Greenland by the way, Pituffik Space Force Base (formerly Thule AFB). It would really make more sense for Canada to govern Greenland than the US, due to the links between Greenland and Canadian Inuit, though quite a few Greenlanders don't want anyone ruling them.

I'm fairly sure that the Panama Canal thing is a way to needle China, although the big issue with the canal is actually poor rainfall. Last year there wasn't enough rainfall to operate the locks full time.

Today he was having a particularly large temper tantrum because Jimmy Carter (who negotiated the return of the Panama Canal!) is getting all the attention. The postal service is even shutting down.

Canadian here. We're not exactly shaking in our boots over this clown's comments on X. We've got enough drama of our own at the moment.

Then they'd have to register their rifles and shotguns and give up their handguns. Oooh would they be pissed off.

unsync · 07/01/2025 23:39

It makes him no better than Putin. Putin wanted Crimea so he marched in and took it, no one batted an eyelid. Who will stop Trump if he annexes Greenland? As the US is one of the biggest contributors, will NATO stop him?

Does he like it just because it's a bit "near" America, or could he just choose, say, Portugal? Belgium? Swindon? Sorry being a bit facetious but I don't understand it - does it mean he'd just overthrow their government and that's it?

devilspawn · 07/01/2025 23:48

He couldn't even manage to finish building the wall he got elected on last time.

I notice that doesn't seem to be coming up now.

I'm more concerned he'll die halfway through, JD Vance seems even more insane.

It's because it's a key location to defend against Russia, which is why there's a US base there.

The US has tried to buy it multiple times over the years.

However, as it's owned by Denmark it's a NATO ally, so he would have to leave NATO to attack it (or just attack it and be kicked out). And then NATO would be required to go to war with the US over Greenland and lose.

timbitstimbytes · 07/01/2025 23:52

America could absolutely take Greenland, they could take Canada, Canadian Armed Forces is currently a shell. The question is should they and what would be the price.
Ingrained in the American worldview is you do not own what you cannot protect. It's why the Second Amendment to the Constitution is important and illogical to a European worldview which has centuries of laws which define and protect private ownership of property obviously it's way more complex than that but you get the general idea.

The price of taking Greenland would be its relationship with Nato but of course, European NATO needs the USA more than USA NATO needs Europe.
The price of taking Panama would be the commercial blowback of the logistics companies, I expect there are legions of American lawyers who would be happy to go through the original contracts signing off the Panama Canal to find a void, an unfulfilled clause, out of it.
Trump isn't a sophisticated intellectual thinker but he is an instinctual one. He is probably trying to make people think about how far they would go to defend things, world leaders in particular, if he decided to do so, revealing their inadequacies in the process.

DonaldTrumpsFakeTan · 07/01/2025 23:52

Clowns to the left of me Jokers to the right...here we are UK in the middle of them

dreamingbohemian · 07/01/2025 23:53

Well the US could do it though I don't think it would be a total cakewalk just because of logistics and the US not really being an Arctic force, it would be a lot to organise

It would break NATO and give China the go ahead to invade Taiwan so I imagine the Pentagon will put up lots of roadblocks

It's just his stupid negotiating shtick, he makes all these threats then Greenland will give some small concession and he'll be stupid as a baby about it

TomPinch · 07/01/2025 23:56

This only shows why the American Revolution was a mistake. If it hadn't happened north America would be one big Canada now. Slavery would have been abolished decades sooner without a civil war, and WW1 and WW2 would have ended sooner as the Americans would have turned up on time.

Defend against Russia how? It's not like Russia is invading across the Arctic. It's a key location for detecting missile launches but the US already has a base there, they don't need the whole territory.

Article V doesn't require NATO members to go to war and that will never happen in this scenario. But yes it would break NATO for good so not surprising Trump is continuing to do things helpful for Russia.
