Do people still do this? Part of me wants to do this... But maybe I'll get bored of one every Sunday?

I’ve never done it , I’m the only one who would eat it here anyway .

lightsandtunnels · 06/01/2025 20:10

DH and I usually go to a local pub for a roast carvey which is so good. Its around £12 a head. I cooked a roast last Sunday for us and totalled up what I spent - £11 on joint of beef, potatoes, stuffing and veg (all fresh). There was enough meat left for another meal but it was definitely not worth the effort just for the two of us! Also the carvery has lots of different veg which I always love and I certainly cba to prepare and cook 6 different veg at home including cauli cheese!
We'll be going back to the carvery next Sunday.

We sort of do. Pretty much every week. But it's not necessarily a British 'traditional' roast with all the trimmings. I usually do roast chicken in a range of marinades and in winter will do that with the usual roast potatos, carrots, parsnips etc. In summer usually roast chicken with lovely salads and good bread. I really cannot cook beef reliably so will branch out to a 7 hour roasted lamb or a gammon.

For me though it's not about the meal, it's about the concept. One special meal, weekly, where the entire family sits down at the table, takes time out of their busy lives and re-connects.

Paradoes · 06/01/2025 20:11

Roast here yes (though yesterday fajitas as we had so many over Christmas)
I prep it Saturday and slow cook the beef so it doesn’t waste my day. I slow cook the joint of beef for four or five hours. Have it about 2pm

BuffaloCauliflower · 06/01/2025 20:11

I do a roast a majority of Sundays, maybe 80%? My mums always done one so there’s some habit there, then my toddler consistently eat entire roasts so that was appealing. Now he only really eats the meat, Yorkshires and gravy but alas I carry on. I find them easy to cook and it’s one less dinner to come up with ideas for. I do bigger and smaller versions with variations not the exact same every time.

Sunshineandrainbow · 06/01/2025 20:11

I do for my adult dds. There is just something about it on a Sunday.
Normally just meat, roast pots, few different veg. Always Parsnips, Yorkshire pudding and stuffing. Sometimes just pigs in blankets as the meat.

waltzingparrot · 06/01/2025 20:11

Yes, we have a Sunday roast every Sunday that we're at home. I sometimes switch out roast potatoes for dauphinoise. My DC love them.

RachelCarew · 06/01/2025 20:11

I'd love it, but my DC aren't huge fans and it isn't worth it for one.

Doggymummar · 06/01/2025 20:12

Yes we do. Sometimes it's a roast GAMMON With egg and chips rather than roast veggies though

littlemissprosseco · 06/01/2025 20:13

Yes, I do, I have four adult kids, all welcome, usually get two plus partners. Plus one set of grandparents.

AlisonDonut · 06/01/2025 20:14

I did for years and years.

But since moving to France, and it being so blooming hot in the summer, too hot to cook a roast, I changed it to all day breakfasts, so sausage, sautéed potatoes, beans, and scrambled egg on toast. So that's now our Sunday thing.

PiastriThePastry · 06/01/2025 20:14

I don’t do every single Sunday but the majority, yes. Sometimes it’s just me, DH and DS, but often the PIL, or my mum, or various siblings and their partners plus kids, in all combinations, will join us too.

Butteredtoast55 · 06/01/2025 20:16

We do it once a month as I wouldn't want it every week. It's o
Mostly roast chicken or beef, but sometimes we use the M&S slow cooked meats which the DC love. I'm vegetarian so there's always a good selection of veg. No matter what the meat, there are roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings!

Zippidydoodah · 06/01/2025 20:16

It’s a lot of effort and food for us. Out of the six of us, only two (the adults) really enjoy it but it’s my partner’s favourite so I do it for him (much to the kids’ disgust!) We don’t do it every week, though. Maybe once a month.

Ciri · 06/01/2025 20:17

Every Sunday, sometimes one midweek too. It’s a relatively cheap meal and gets vegetables into the teens

Zippidydoodah · 06/01/2025 20:17

I do brisket in the slow cooker, too. Fail safe way (for me, as I like tender, slow cooked beef).

EveryOtherNameTaken · 06/01/2025 20:17

Every other week.

Sherararara · 06/01/2025 20:18

We tend to do “family dinner” most Sundays, which could be a roast or not, the main point being to all sit down together. Schedules during the week mean we all tend to eat at different times.

frozendaisy · 06/01/2025 20:19

We do in the cooler months.
I find it an easy, slow cook and can wash up as you go along. .
Sunday afternoon/evening is house day, homework, packing bags, board games, quizzes, crosswords, weekend paper chat round table, Iggy Pop on radio6, watm kitchen.

So it's nice family time

user87349287657 · 06/01/2025 20:19

Yes, every Sunday. Sometimes with guests too!

Newhi · 06/01/2025 20:19

About four times a year. I’m not that keen on them, and we prefer to eat what we fancy on that day rather than having it all planned out every week.

Screamingabdabz · 06/01/2025 20:20

I’d love to do a poll of all the Sunday roast people and see how many women are spending their Sundays cooking them as opposed to men. We (me and DH) tended to do slow cooker meat dishes when our kids were little but now they’ve flown the nest, roasts are romanticised, but no one wants to stand cooking them. I’m certainly not, so we graze now instead.

XiCi · 06/01/2025 20:21

Yes pretty much every Sunday we'll have a roast. In the winter this is usually with roast potatoes, couple of types of veg, gravy. We like the Jamie oliver slow roast lamb tray bake sometimes as well. You just chuck the lamb joint, potatoes and root veg in with stock and slowly cook for hours till the meat is falling off the bone. It's basically just throw everything in a tray, bung in the oven and leave. In summer it's more likely to be marinated roast chicken with some sort of salad, maybe baby roast potatoes. There is usually enough meat leftover to make at least another meal during the week as well so it's really economical

mondaytosunday · 06/01/2025 20:21

We did until my DH passed away. We used to have my parents, then just my mother, over every week. After that I still had her but didn't often do a roast (my husband cooked it). If he was alive I think we would still be doing it if the kids were at home.

Cornecopia · 06/01/2025 20:22

Most Sundays we do. I love it so do my kids. We change up the meat and veg. Sometimes have mash instead of roasties etc. it’s a lovely tradition for us
