Do people still do this? Part of me wants to do this... But maybe I'll get bored of one every Sunday?

Mist Sundays during winter months, and barbecues in the summer. Young adult dc cooks it.

GellerYeller · 06/01/2025 22:09

Everyone I can think of had a roast every Sunday, growing up.
Mum would spend much of the morning making a delicious three course roast. Including home made Yorkshires, gravy, and a dessert from scratch, sometimes involving pastry. Shop bought sides or short cuts weren’t within budget I think.

I don’t have the time or inclination to match her efforts! We don’t have roasts weekly, or even restrict them to Sundays, although we had one last night.
DH can do them but freely admits timing baffles him!

I think it’s more straightforward these days with air fryers and dishwashers to lighten the load.

I cook one for my Dad if I'm visiting him as he's traditional, so falls on a Sunday around 6 times a year.
At home we've got it down to a couple of times a year when the DSC moan they haven't had their Dads roast potatoes and gravy in ages... we don't have one at Xmas anymore.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 06/01/2025 22:11

We have a roast dinner most Sundays during the winter months. In summer we bbq the meat instead and have it with salad and rice.

DH and I usually go to a local pub for a roast carvey which is so good. Its around £12 a head. I cooked a roast last Sunday for us and totalled up what I spent - £11 on joint of beef, potatoes, stuffing and veg (all fresh). There was enough meat left for another meal but it was definitely not worth the effort just for the two of us! Also the carvery has lots of different veg which I always love and I certainly cba to prepare and cook 6 different veg at home including cauli cheese!
We'll be going back to the carvery next Sunday.

We go to a local carvery each Sunday apart from the odd time we decide to go somewhere else for a change. It's extremely good and there is a selection of 5 different meats plus salmon. I get some of my favourite veg which dh doesn't really like without the bother of cooking it plus no dishes. What's not to like.
There is only the two of us to cooking a large joint isn't really an option. Though if I get one of Marks small joints with a yellow sticker which will go in the freezer I will maybe do it during the week.

Getmeonaflight · 06/01/2025 22:19

Yes..we love them!!!!!

Lidlisthebusiness · 06/01/2025 22:22

We have a roast every Sunday, I'm so bored of them especially as a veggie but my husband and children enjoy it. Husband works abroad, so when he's away, I obviously cook, but when he's home, he's cooks it every week.

Pinana · 06/01/2025 22:29

Yes, every Sunday (although not in the summer if it's really hot!). My husband cooks it. He does it really well, and very much enjoys doing it, so I enjoy a relaxing afternoon while he's in the kitchen (we tend to eat it at 7pm). I love the roast leftovers meal on Monday or Tuesday too.

I don't find it boring because we alternate between chicken and pork, with the occasional beef or lamb thrown in too. They're all delicious.

Clevs · 06/01/2025 22:35

Every Sunday! We rotate between beef, pork, gammon and chicken.

Whatever meat is left over we slice and freeze and reheat in gravy for another day when we're short on time. Or we'll dice it up, cook extra veg and mash it all together for bubble & squeak in the week. If we've had chicken the leftovers get made into a curry.

Sunday roasts are one of the highlights of the week. A bottle of wine on the go whilst we cook it and just enjoying the time together in the kitchen.

Madcats · 07/01/2025 09:37

Leftovers-related, but the best £25 I've spent in a long while was on an electric mini-chopper from John Lewis. It does an excellent job of shredding/mincing leftover meats for shepherd's/cottage pies and pasta sauces etc. as long as you do it in small batches.

mumonthehill · 07/01/2025 09:42

We have one every Sunday in winter. It is for me such an easy meal to make and everyone enjoys it. Never have massive of left overs but enough to do a pasta dish the next day.

MontyNojangles · 07/01/2025 09:48

I love a roast.
When I was a child, it was every single Sunday without fail.
My mil (no longer with us bless her) would ask me every week and seem totally aghast when I said we wouldn't be having a roast on Sunday. Sometimes I'm just not arsed and sometimes I break the rules and do one on a Wednesday

cheapskatemum · 07/01/2025 10:46

We did this as a family and teenaged DSs started to complain about it. Fast forward a few years to when they've all left home & they were begging for a Sunday roast dinner whenever they returned for the weekend.

GroovyChick87 · 07/01/2025 10:48

Normally yes but not religiously. We have a roast during the week too.

dynamiccactus · 07/01/2025 10:57

I do nearly every Sunday. it's one thing we all like, and it's not that difficult to do.

Other things seem to involve a load more prep than peeling a few veg and roasting the chicken.

Moier · 07/01/2025 10:57

My Mum used to do this every Sunday.. buy I'm now 66.. we looked forward to it.
When l left home .. l did it like once a month for hubby and kids.. we were often out on a Sunday.. but l remember a friend doing it every Sunday ready for when her hubby came back from pub.. she would have it on table ready...then he would go to bed for two hours after.. l don't think many do it now.. too much to do.. but back when l was a child not many people had cars or went anywhere.

caringcarer · 07/01/2025 11:16

Probably 2 out of 4 Sundays but I sometimes roast mid week if my adult DS is coming to see me I usually cook a roast for him. DH is vegetarian so is not bothered. I'm sometimes cooking a roast for just myself and my foster son. Sometimes I make a stew on a Sunday..

CraftyGin · 07/01/2025 11:22

We have a roast every Sunday. It is just so easy - just bung the meat in the oven, and then do potatoes and two other veg.

RedPony1 · 07/01/2025 11:26

I'm too busy to cook a roast, we're very rarely not super busy on a weekend with hobbies. we never had it growing up either as we were always out at our hobbies

VikingLady · 07/01/2025 11:34

My mum did, all throughout her marriage. Every single week. After dad died she has never cooked another one and never will: she'd fucking loathed being chained to the kitchen for the same kind of thing week in, week out.

I think I've cooked perhaps one per year since I moved out, although it's my favourite meal. I associate cooking it with being a total slog.

The Sunday roast was very much the thing when I was going up.
A long-standing tradition that very seldom varied in any way.

Fast forward to me having my own home, a DH from another country, and the DC's.

I honestly can't remember the last time I prepared a roast of beef with all the standard accompaniments.
These days everyone wants to eat light, fresh meals, lots of diverse salads, vegetables, very little meat, potatoes are not often on the menu.

In my memory I think back to my mum giving me, after the roast was done, a slice of bread, oven fried in the glistening dark brown drippings from the roasting pan, and my stomach now heaves with the thought of the grease!
However back then it was considered a treat, much anticipated.

It's really quite lovely to know that there are still so many who abide by the old tradition of a roast of beef on a Sunday.

OMG that bread sounds truly amazing! Especially on a day like today

Iliketulips · 07/01/2025 11:52

Not here. I work so am out of house 7am-5.15pm. * *In all fairness usually cooks dinner when this happens, so I leave the dinner choice to him, and it's never been a roast.

DustyMaiden · 07/01/2025 11:58

DD and I visit each other alternate Sundays for a roast and homemade dessert. I do cook them on other days, might use chicken breast or pork chops to cut down on time.

CamelByCamel · 07/01/2025 13:05

I like a roast, especially the leftovers, but we're often out on a Sunday. Weekdays are sometimes the most convenient time for us to do them. It is nice starting a week with roast leftovers though, that I cannot deny!

DilemmaDelilah · 07/01/2025 13:11

Not us. We do have roasts, we are having one tonight as it happens, but I tend to cook things that need more input from me at weekends. I work, DH is retired and can reliably cook a roast, so we usually have them during the week. Not every week though.
