Do people still do this? Part of me wants to do this... But maybe I'll get bored of one every Sunday?

Yes, pretty much every Sunday.

I’d love to do a poll of all the Sunday roast people and see how many women are spending their Sundays cooking them as opposed to men. We (me and DH) tended to do slow cooker meat dishes when our kids were little but now they’ve flown the nest, roasts are romanticised, but no one wants to stand cooking them. I’m certainly not, so we graze now instead.

That’s a good idea, I mainly cook them my DP had a few times but I think mainly because I really enjoy doing it

socks1107 · 06/01/2025 20:24

No! I have it when I fancy it. Sometimes that's a Saturday and other times I can go weeks or months without cooking one

BasilParsley · 06/01/2025 20:24

Abso-bloody-lutey! Old lady here, defo do the roast every Sunday (one child usually pops round to join in) but even if they don't, I'll still do the roast!

TaggieO · 06/01/2025 20:25

I do one a couple of times a week at the moment as DS is obsessed with roast chicken, and I can then do the proverbial mumsnet thing and feed us for the entire week on the leftovers. In fact we’ve had a chicken pot pie tonight with leftover chicken.

Yes, I do, I have four adult kids, all welcome, usually get two plus partners. Plus one set of grandparents.

I love this. This is what I hope my future looks like :)

mamaduckbone · 06/01/2025 20:26

Not every Sunday - maybe one or two a month in winter, rarely in summer when often have a barbecue.
I do usually cook something more traditional on a Sunday though, so a pie, casserole, toad in the hole...something with potatoes and veg as we rarely eat that sort of meal in the week. Often a pudding too.
It is for us, as a pp said, more about the ritual of a meal eaten together and often eaten at lunchtime rather than in the evening.

Madcats · 06/01/2025 20:27

I probably do 25-30 per year. DD is often doing sporty stuff on a Sunday, so "Roast" might happen on a Wednesday.

Midweek spuds/carrots/parsnip are smaller cubed things.

Leftover meat tends to get shredded into some sort of pasta/shepherds' or cottage pie dish or chicken chunked up for a curry or pastry pie.

I've done it for decades, so it takes minimal thought (and a meat thermometer):

CandyCane457 · 06/01/2025 20:31

I grew up in a house where, from October-April/May it was a roast every Sunday and then from May-September it was a BBQ every Sunday. Come rain or shine! My parents still do it now and I love going home on Sundays.

DH does all the peeling and I bung the meat & pots in the oven/put veg on to simmer. That's pretty much all there is to a roast, it doesn't require anyone to stand over it or spend hours in the kitchen. Probably only takes about half an hour of my time.

Cynic17 · 06/01/2025 20:33

Dear God, no. I have had my own home for over 35 years. I have never eaten or cooked a "roast dinner" in all that time.
I'm a proper carnivore, but they're just not nice things to eat!

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 06/01/2025 20:33

No kidding like it when they were
Young and it was just stressful. Now with activities / seeing friends etc it's pointless.

BunnyLake · 06/01/2025 20:34

No I don't do roast dinners very often. One son doesn't like them but I will do one occasionally. Usually chicken. I really like them but can’t be arsed to do one every week.

SantaToSSD · 06/01/2025 20:34

I do more often than not during the colder months anyway. I just find thinking up meals so arduous each week, so a roast is an easy option.

We don't have them every week, once a month or maybr twice a month in winter but I don't think I have to 'stand there' all day to make a roast? Peeling a bunch of spuds, carrots and parsnips can take a little while - DH and I do vary who does this but depending on the other chores of the day but other than that whoever is nearest the kitchen when the next step needs doing, does it and that's it. The gravy requires a bit of care because we do make from scratch but that's just in the last 20 mins of so whilst the rest of the meal is coming together and we do share the load on that too...

garlictwist · 06/01/2025 20:36

No way. What a waste of a day off cooking etc. I'd rather be out and about.

FFS - Kids didn't like it when young...

Inthebleakmidwinter1 · 06/01/2025 20:36

Only in the winter. Most Sundays especially if the weather is rubbish

Shinyandnew1 · 06/01/2025 20:39

We don't always have a Sunday roast (DH cooks and can't always be arsed) but tend to have a 'gravy' dinner! Sausage and mash, toad in the hole, beef, pie etc

It's a nice way to end the weekend :)

slightlydistrac · 06/01/2025 20:39

More often than not we do, although we do mix it up with a chicken pie sometimes, or chops or a casserole - things like that. It is usually a 'traditional' dinner with potatoes and veg anyway. Occasional salads in the summer, with chicken portions or salmon maybe.

AceofPentacles · 06/01/2025 20:40

Yes every Sunday unless it's boiling weather.
It's one of the few healthy meals (ie veg) that DS will eat. After doing this for ten years my roast potatoes are legendary!

BarbaraWoodlouse · 06/01/2025 20:40

Yes most Sundays apart from the hot summer months. It doesn’t take all day but certainly longer than the half hour one poster above takes. Cauliflower cheese is a must-have though, as are sprouts which probably ups the time. I do however batch freeze the cheese sauce which helps.

DowntonNabby · 06/01/2025 20:40

Yep, pretty much every Sunday unless there's a heatwave. It's such an easy meal to cook and all the family loves it. If we've had a really busy week, it's a nice excuse to sit down for a relaxed meal together.

HarrietSchulenberg · 06/01/2025 20:40

Most Sundays in the winter, yes. Not so often in warmer weather but we do have a nicer dinner than what's thrown together midweek.

Notrynajudge · 06/01/2025 20:41

Usually do a roast dinner during the week actually when I'm wfh and able to chuck it into the oven on the timer and ready for after school. Usually a roast chicken, roast carrots and parsnips, steamed greens and maybe yorkshire puds.

It's wholesome, simple to cook and nutritious with no UPFs ...apart from a few glugs of Bisto.
