Do people still do this? Part of me wants to do this... But maybe I'll get bored of one every Sunday?

DH does all the peeling and I bung the meat & pots in the oven/put veg on to simmer. That's pretty much all there is to a roast, it doesn't require anyone to stand over it or spend hours in the kitchen. Probably only takes about half an hour of my time.

Same - it's not necessarily every Sunday. Sometimes it's lasagne or cottage pie but always with loads of seasonal veg! OH does the veg prep and I work the magic of seasonings and cooking times 😆 he usual does some jobs in the garden or with the children whilst I potter about or scroll Mumsnet haha hard work paid off with a high protein/high carb dinner and often a pudding!

I hope it becomes our family tradition with our children/partners/friends leaving full and nurtured 🫢

Wolfpa · 06/01/2025 21:27

Not a roast but we do have a proper family meal every Sunday. One that we spend a little longer making and use the nice plates and cutlery.

Girlmath · 06/01/2025 21:29

I love cooking a roast on a Sunday. It really helps me unwind for a couple of hours 😅 my DP and our two children (7 and 6) love a roast. They'll happily eat all the veg and they love my homemade yorkies. I like making a quick cake at the same time too which we usually have with custard afterwards and finish in the week in lunch boxes.
I reckon we have a proper roast on a Sunday 70% of the year. When it's really hot in the summer I'll roast a chicken which we'll have with wedges/new potatoes/crusty bread with salad, coleslaw etc.

BobbyBiscuits · 06/01/2025 21:31

Would I eat one? Probably. Would I cook one? Fuck no.
Special occasions only.
I do a roast chicken with roast pots about once a month with boiled plain veg but to me that's not really a proper roast.
You need home made Yorkshires, stuffing, braised cabbage, pig in blankets, roast veg, several green veg, cauliflower cheese, bread sauce, real gravy.
Too much effort to do regularly!

warmbath · 06/01/2025 21:32

We do, the kids love them and my parents come over, it makes memories, even if teenagers are bickering 🙈

warmbath · 06/01/2025 21:32

Me and DH alternate each week to cook, couldn't do it every week

AnnaKing81 · 06/01/2025 21:32

I work Sundays so do-one on a Saturday.

FurForksSake · 06/01/2025 21:33

Yes, most Sundays I cook a roast plus a traditional pudding (apple crumble, rice pudding, bread and butter pudding etc). I love a roast, we vary the meats and vegetables. My family prefer mine to eating out so I just do it, doesn't feel like much effort once veg are sorted. If not a roast it would be a pie from scratch or a big stew in the pressure cooker.

Saturday night I often cook something fancy or special (steak, curry with several dishes, pizza in our pizza oven - this was Saturday this weekend, we got five pizzas cooked before the snow started!).

I enjoy cooking, we have meal boxes five days a week (we've tried quitting twice, but it works for us and I can control my calories more easily and choose ten minute meals and DH and 11 year old can make them), so enjoy some relaxed cooking at the weekend.

During the summer I probably do it less and we replace it with hikes and picnics.

I hate red meat but I do roast chicken or game (duck, pheasant, Guinea fowl, partridge, grouse) over the winter. I like red cabbage, roast parsnips & bread sauce so it’s a good excuse. Not every Sunday though.

ReadingSoManyThreads · 06/01/2025 21:36

Most Sunday's between September to April, at DH's insistence (he cooks it), I'd prefer them not as regular to be honest.

ETA I should say weeks rather than Sunday's because it's sometimes on a Saturday, or even mid-week!!

Copernicus321 · 06/01/2025 21:36

We do a roast every Sunday with a traditional pudding, we've been doing this for the last 30 years. The kids absolutely loved it growing up and it's usually the reason why they phone up on a Friday evening to invite themselves around. Thinking back, my parents and PIL did the same for us when we were younger.

RosesAndHellebores · 06/01/2025 21:37

We have a special family meal on Sundays, often a roast, or a rich casserole or lamb shanks, when the weather turns chilly until it brightens up. In summer often nice steaks snd chops on the barbecue, minted lamb, salmon, smoked salmon or chicken with nice salads and barbecued garlic bread slices.

We have it on Sunday evenings so the day isn't split in two. The nicest part is that it's a bit of a magnet for the grown up DC and partners.

MoonKiss · 06/01/2025 21:39

Not a full roast every week, no. It’s usually something hearty and meaty though - toad in the hole, shepherds pie, giant yorkies with sausage & mash, beef and chorizo stew etc.

Yesterday we had a full English at 4pm.

DontshootmyRaptors · 06/01/2025 21:40

Yes every Sunday in the winter and I make the big Yorkshire's then put everything else in the Yorkshire and pour the gravy over. Just like my nanna used to do.

Motheranddaughter · 06/01/2025 21:44

Most weeks we have a roast dinner
I actually find it easier to cook for a largish number than other meals

Tintackedsea · 06/01/2025 21:46

Hate roast dinner. It's one of my least favourite meals. I make them specially when my siblings are home because they both love them and I do them and freeze them for my parents.

Mingenious · 06/01/2025 21:48

Usually, but not always have a roast on a Sunday. Sometimes we’ll have a stew or something instead.

NZDreaming · 06/01/2025 21:49

if we feel like it we’ll make one but rarely actually on a Sunday and definitely not weekly.

NoahsTortoise · 06/01/2025 21:50

No never have.
DH's family did in his youth so now he hates them, so we rarely have them unless we're at his mum's.

LovelyDaaling · 06/01/2025 21:52

We usually make a roast dinner every Sunday, really miss it if we don't.

Mumofyellows · 06/01/2025 21:54

Most Sundays I cook one, sometimes a cottage our for a change or if I'm short of time, in summer I don't though.

gingercat02 · 06/01/2025 21:55

Not always a roast, but we try to have something a bit more special than mid week teas. We often have pudding, too, which we never do on other nights.
Yesterday, we had pork steaks in honey and mustard sauce with roasties and veg, followed by homemade rhubarb crumble and custard or ice cream

Foison · 06/01/2025 21:59

Most weeks when we are at home. But it's DH's domain. He loves it and Yorkshires in particular. I hate the amount of washing up it creates so probably wouldn't if left to my own devices. On the upside, it gets plenty of veg into the DC!

Littletinytarzanswingingfromanosehair · 06/01/2025 22:00

My Sunday Roast season starts end of September until Easter Sunday dinner. Then I have a break for summer and it's mainly dishes like proper carbonara, steak and chips or lamb chops with Salad. Nothing too taxing in the kitchen 🙂

This is what I do, I love a roast dinner, my kids do too and one is a vegetarian so will just have potatoes veg & Yorkshire puddings, I don't always have a joint of meat though, sometimes I'll do toad in the hole or chicken thighs. Roast potatoes are my favourite
