It's my sister
Ever since she met her partner (2 years ago ) she's away all the time
Including meals out /cocktails etc
I just think she could be using her money more sensible ,instead of holidays etc

There is no more sensible a way to use your excess money than holidays.

I’ll die on that hill.

She’s enjoying her life!
Unless there is some backstory - I’m not sure what the problem is?

Global Warming folks - it's a real thing. FLIGHTS contribute a lot to that.

Yes it is excessive to go away that many times a year.

[pile on now - I couldn't give a shit]

Most of the list is uk, so no flights. And as I've said Musk's jets do more damage each year than an average person in over 800 years. Denying myself a couple of holiday flights makes no difference to anything.

The carbon footprint is probably ridiculous but if she assume the world is going to boil, living more now is logical

It suggests a deep unhappiness in where she lives

Or perhaps they're perfectly content and like to see places and people as part of that contentment?

" perfectly content" reads to me as " smug and self satisfied"

I do more than that?

Gremlins101 · 05/01/2025 09:33

Be happy for her. Yes, it's a lot, but I'd prob do the same if I could afford it and didn't have kids!

Interesting that people have to think of reasons to visit a major city. Newcastle is brilliant, we neither had a wedding to go to nor clubbing when we went, we went for the history, to explore it and to cycle along the cycle routes

Im actually currently looking at Birkenhead for an option this year for one of our trips because there are lots of cycle routes around there, plus Chester, that holiday is currently competing with Norfolk and Cambridge and Bruges, havent decided yet

We also went on holiday to Stoke on Trent once and some bloke in a shop laughed when we said 'we're on holiday'!

UK destinations are hugely underrated, we have a lot of industrial heritage and beautiful scenary.

The nightlife is clearly a big draw for visitors to Newcastle though. Not really any getting round that one. A quick google suggests the tourist sector are very aware of the value.

Birkenhead isn't a bad place to base yourself at all, very close to some extremely popular tourist spots. You've got Liverpool and North Wales within striking distance, then of course you're near Manchester which is one of the most visited destinations in the UK. I'd recommend checking whether the races are on at the time you want to visit Chester, however. I've made that mistake in the past.

Most people I know have well more than this including a lot more holidays abroad

As long as you’re out of debt, have clothes on your back, and you and the family are fed…then there’s nothing more sensible to spend your money on than travelling

Chocbuttonsandredwine · 05/01/2025 09:33

You sound like my partners ex-wife 🤣

It’s the best use of savings ever….holidays holidays holidays

housemaus · 05/01/2025 09:34

I don't see why you care so much? Unless she's borrowing money off you to do it it's none of your business.

Firsttimegran · 05/01/2025 09:34

Good job you’re not my sister we’ve done Scotland 10 times, Derbyshire twice, ,lakes once Donnington Northumberland and 9 countries in Europe and Scandinavia all will still working

If they can afford it (and even if they can’t, lol) it’s none of your business.

Not great from an environmental pov but let her worry about her money.

What do you want everyone to do in life? Cycle around the block forever. Ffs, it’s Newcastle etc she’s hardly hiring a private jet 7 days a week!

OnlyDespairRemains · 05/01/2025 09:34

If someone has actually earnt the money they spend by doing a societally useful and productive job, then it wouldn't bother me particularly.

If they have inherited the money, or they are a multiple property landlord, or hedge fund manager or an HR director though, then it probably would.

FirstOfTheFirst · 05/01/2025 09:34

It really doesn't. I'm not a massive holidayer myself but even I can see that someone can be perfectly content where they live and still want to go away 9 times a year.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 05/01/2025 09:34

Absolutely not, as long as you can afford it. We will likeky be abroad (canary Isles, france, Italy, australia, antigua) for 5/6 months this year and also go to the lake district when home. Life is fir living!

CamelByCamel · 05/01/2025 09:34

cardibach · 05/01/2025 09:26

Hmmm someone who has travelled a lot now questioning the ethics. Shouldn't others get the chance now you've done enough?

This.

housethatbuiltme · 05/01/2025 09:35

When we where only a family of 3 we use to go for several nights/weekends away in a travelodge to places like York, Edinburgh, Lake District, Manchester, Glasgow etc... which is all not that far from us. It often cost less than £55 and any other family activity pretty much adds up to that anyway (and you go stir crazy having already done all the free options where you live).

I don't think 4 weekends in a travelodge or premier in or cheap hotel deals etc... is mad at all.

4 abroad holidays might seem 'overkill' to many but it depends on their lifestyle, the cost, duration etc... If I was a working single/couple with disposable money I would totally take myself away and see the world. What else would there be to do? Might as well make the most of having freedom and money when you can.
